Chapter 2

"I’m warning you, don’t even think about doing anything harmful. Daisy has been frail since she was a child. If anything happens to her, I won’t let you off," Henry said, his entire body tense as he stared at me defensively.

Just as he was about to say more, a doctor ran over and interrupted him. "Amelia, why are your clothes wet? You just came back from the brink of death and here you are running around. We’ve been looking for you everywhere."

Then, as if dropping a bombshell, the doctor added, "Do you want your child buried or cremated?"

Before I could even process the words, let alone respond, Henry exploded in anger. He grabbed my hand roughly, pinning me against the wall. "Amelia, what did you do to the baby?"

"Hey, please calm down," the doctor said, trying to intervene. "The child is gone, but Ms. Brooks is suffering more than you could imagine."

The doctor tried to pull Henry away, but no matter how hard the doctor tugged, Henry wouldn't budge. In his eyes, besides anger, there was a trace of panic.

Did he care about the child's life? It's a shame we were not worthy to be the child’s parents.

Henry's grip on me gradually loosened.

In my ear, Daisy's weak voice echoed. "Henry, the baby has always been healthy. How could something happen? Why is this obstetrician in the surgery department?"

Henry stopped pulling away and he let out a sigh.

The anger that followed was even more intense. He roughly squeezed my chin. "How disgusting. To get me to look at you, you actually used the baby to deceive me?"

I weakly shook my head and tears fell from my eyes, landing on Henry’s hand.

He froze for a few seconds, then, as if touching something dirty, pushed me away, his face showing an unmistakable disgust. "Always pretending to be weak and you do it so well. Even you called the doctor in."

The doctor, who had been mentioned, stood by, hesitant to speak, but eventually chose to say something. "Everyone, I’m not lying to you. Ms. Brooks, would you like to come with me to take care of things?"

I didn’t respond, just walked toward the doctor.

But before I could even take a step, Henry grabbed me again. "What’s this? Now that you can't keep up the act, you’re just going to leave? Didn’t I tell you that Daisy needs you? There are plenty of nurses in obstetrics to take care of the baby. You don’t need to worry about it."

Daisy gasped and threw herself into Henry's arms, acting all sweet and helpless. "Henry, my head hurts so much."

Henry let go of me and gently massaged her temples with a look of concern. "It's okay, it's okay. I’ll help you back to rest right away."

"Why aren’t you following us?" he said, his tone sharp as he glanced back at me.

Henry coldly urged me on and the area around us was filled with onlookers. The noise of the crowd drowned everything out as a chill ran through my heart.

Ignoring the pain in my body, I dragged myself toward the doctor. What connection did Daisy and I have? Right now, my child was alone, unable to rest in peace.

I had barely grasped the doctor’s hand for a few seconds when Henry pulled us apart.

"Doctor, take care of the child. I will pay for everything!" I hoarsely called out my last plea.

Henry swiftly dismissed the doctor, shoved me back into the room and slammed the door behind us.

He and Daisy exchanged looks of amusement.

"That last performance was pretty convincing," he mocked.

I leaned on the bed, trying to steady myself, my voice trembling as I confronted him. "You said you didn’t know me, so why are you suddenly concerned about the baby? Who gave you the right to care?"

Henry let out a derisive laugh. "I found you in the obstetrics department, of course I know. And even after that idiot left, my memories stayed. Though I wish those memories had never existed."

If it weren’t for the sight of Daisy quietly laughing behind him, I might’ve been shaken by Henry’s words.
