Chapter 1

I was pregnant. The baby wasn't Frederick's.

I was staring at the test results, trying to figure out how to explain this to him—when I turned and there he was, walking Felicity Fox out of the obstetrics department.

Our eyes met. Guilt flashed across his face and he looked away.

「Felicity's pregnant. I told her she could keep it.」

「Your baby—go handle that.」

I blinked once, and then I was nodding, relief flooding through me.

A year later, I brought my baby to the hospital for a checkup and ran into Frederick and Felicity again.

He stared at the child in my arms with open disgust.

「You went behind my back and had it?!」

「Even if you did, I'll never claim that kid!」

……

My period was over half a month late before I finally caved and bought a home test.

Two lines on the stick, and the air locked in my chest.

I didn't hesitate. I grabbed my keys, got in the car, and drove straight to the hospital.

Thirty minutes later I was standing in the corridor holding a positive HCG report and an ultrasound—five weeks along.

I wanted to scream.

I was actually pregnant.

One night. One single night, and I was pregnant.

I gripped the report, tilted my head back, and let out a long breath.

This baby wasn't Frederick's.

How was I supposed to explain this to him?

Get rid of it in secret?

No.

The doctor had just told me my health was poor.

If I went through with an abortion now, I might never be able to conceive again.

I wanted to keep this baby.

Then what? Have it in secret?

If I never told him, Frederick would never know.

I was still arguing with myself, both sides screaming, when I looked up—

And saw Frederick walking out of the obstetrics specialist clinic with Felicity Fox on his arm.

Our eyes met.

The instant he saw me, guilt flickered across his face.

He looked away.

His voice was flat.

「Felicity's pregnant. I told her she could keep it.」

His gaze dropped to the report in my hand.

「Your baby—go handle that.」

Shock. Disbelief. And then it clicked.

Three seconds. That was all it took.

I nodded.

One word.

「Okay.」

More than okay, actually.

This way, I could keep my baby out in the open with no questions asked.

I drove home and tossed the test results onto the coffee table.

Antonia spotted them while she was tidying up.

Her voice shot up with excitement.

「Miss Sullivan, you're pregnant?!」

「This is wonderful! You and Mr. Sanchez can get married right away!」

She couldn't hide the joy on her face, grinning so wide it nearly reached her ears.

She knew how I felt about Frederick.

Had always known. It was the kind of love that had been there so long it felt like something I was born with.

We'd grown up together, Frederick and I. Our families were longtime family friends, the kind where everyone just assumed the two of us would end up married. It was never a question—it was a fact, the way holidays and birthdays were facts.

I'd believed it too.

For as long as I could remember, I'd been in love with Frederick Sanchez.

He was handsome, brilliant, amazing on the basketball court.

I'd been chasing after him since we were kids.

But Frederick had never seemed to feel the same way about me.

To him, I was more like a little sister.

Then high school happened, and Frederick fell hard for the first time.

Felicity Fox—prettiest girl in school.

They started dating openly, skipping class together, making no effort to hide it.

Frederick even got her name tattooed on his arm.

The whole thing blew up big enough to reach his father.

Valentine Sanchez tracked Felicity down, paid her off, and shipped her abroad.

Frederick never forgave him for it. Four full years of ice. He went through all of college without speaking a single word to his father.
