Chapter 1

The candles were still burning when Isabella heard the moan.

Low.

Breathy.

Female.

She froze in the hallway of their penthouse apartment, the anniversary cake trembling slightly in her hands.

Three years of marriage.

Three hours of preparation.

Three seconds before her world shattered.

At first, she told herself she was mistaken.

Maybe the TV was on.

Maybe Daniel was on a call.

Maybe-

Another moan. Louder this time.

Followed by his voice.

Soft. Intimate. The voice he hadn't used on her in months.

"Don't worry," Daniel murmured. "She won't be back until late."

The cake slipped from her fingers.

It hit the marble floor with a sickening splat.

Silence followed.

Then, there were hurried whispers from the bedroom.

Isabella didn't remember walking down the hallway.

Didn't remember pushing open the half-closed door.

But she would remember what she saw for the rest of her life.

Daniel.

Her husband.

In their bed.

With another woman beneath him.

The silk anniversary sheets she bought last week tangled around their naked bodies.

For a second, no one spoke.

Daniel's eyes met hers.

Not guilty.

Not ashamed.

Just... annoyed.

The woman gasped and pulled the sheet to her chest.

"Oh my God-" she whispered.

Isabella's voice came out eerily calm.

"Am I interrupting?"

Daniel exhaled slowly, as if she had walked in during a business meeting.

"You weren't supposed to be home yet."

That hurt more than the betrayal.

She swallowed.

"I came home early. It's our anniversary."

Silence.

The other woman stiffened.

Daniel rolled off the bed with zero urgency, reaching for his pants.

"You should've called first."

Isabella stared at him.

"I should have called? Before coming into my own home?"

Daniel finally looked at her fully.

And whatever she saw in his eyes killed something inside her.

"I didn't want to do this tonight," he said flatly. "But maybe it's better this way."

Her fingers curled.

"Do what?"

He finished buttoning his shirt before answering.

"I want a divorce."

The word echoed in the room.

Divorce.

Three years of loving him.

Supporting him when his startup nearly collapsed.

Enduring his mother's constant insults.

She gave up her own career to help build his company.

And now-

A divorce?

"For her?" Isabella asked quietly.

The woman shifted uncomfortably.

Daniel didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

The honesty was brutal.

"You're joking," Isabella whispered.

"I'm not."

She felt the floor tilt slightly beneath her heels.

"What about us?"

"There is no 'us,' Isabella." His voice turned cold. "You were convenient. Supportive. Safe. But I've outgrown this."

Outgrown.

Like she was an old coat he no longer needed.

Her throat burned.

"You promised forever."

He laughed softly.

"You were naive enough to believe that."

The other woman slid out of bed, wrapping herself in Isabella's robe.

"I think I should go-"

"No," Daniel said. "Stay."

Isabella's nails dug into her palms.

"Daniel, how long?"

He didn't even try to lie.

"Six months."

Six months.

Half a year.

While she was planning anniversary surprises.

While she was defending him to everyone.

While she was loving him.

Her voice trembled now.

"Why?"

The woman spoke instead.

"Because I'm pregnant."

The world went silent.

Isabella blinked.

"What?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"She's carrying my child."

Her ears rang.

"That's not possible."

"It is."

She stared at him.

"And if she wasn't pregnant?"

He didn't hesitate.

"I'd still leave."

That was the final blow.

Not the pregnancy.

Not the cheating.

But the certainty.

The complete absence of love.

She laughed suddenly.

Soft.

Broken.

"You know what's funny?" she whispered. "I was going to tell you something tonight, too."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

She shook her head.

"It doesn't matter anymore."

He grabbed his watch from the nightstand.

"I'll have my lawyer send papers tomorrow."

"You're kicking me out?"

"It's my penthouse."

"You bought it with our money."

"My money," he corrected. "My company."

She stared at him in disbelief.

"You wouldn't have company without me."

"And yet," he said smoothly, "I do."

Something inside her finally cracked.

The tears came-but silently.

She refused to sob in front of them.

Refused to beg.

Instead, she stepped backward toward the door.

"Congratulations," she said softly to the woman. "You've won."

The woman looked uneasy.

Daniel didn't.

As Isabella turned to leave, his voice stopped her.

"Oh, and Isabella?"

She didn't look back.

"Don't make this messy. You'll walk away with more dignity that way."

Dignity.

She almost laughed again.

She walked out of the bedroom.

Out of the hallway.

Out of the penthouse.

She didn't take her purse.

Didn't take her coat.

Didn't take anything except the wedding ring, which she slowly twisted off her finger in the elevator.

The metal felt heavier than it ever had.

By the time she reached the lobby, her phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

We'll discuss settlements tomorrow.

Settlement.

Like she was a contract.

Like she was nothing.

The elevator doors closed behind her.

And Isabella finally let the tears fall.

But as she stepped into the cold night air-

Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach.

Because Daniel wasn't the only one with a secret.

And if what she suspected was true...

He had just thrown away more than a wife.

He had thrown away his child.

Her phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Then answered.

A deep, unfamiliar male voice spoke on the other end.

"Isabella Hart?"

She swallowed.

"Yes."

"This is Alexander Laurent. We need to talk about your husband."

Her breath caught.

"How do you know my husband?"

A pause.

Then-

"I know everything."

And suddenly...

The night didn't feel cold anymore.

It felt dangerous.
