Chapter 3

When I returned, the house was pitch dark. Turning on the lights, I was startled to see Evan sitting on the sofa, looking lost in thought.

"Evan, why did you not turn on the light? You scared me," I said, playfully scolding him.

Evan, seeing me return, approached me step by step. I found myself backed into a corner, with no way to escape.

"What is wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" I asked with genuine concern in my eyes.

Evan embraced me tightly. "It is nothing, just a bit tired. I am going to bed now."

Before I could react, Evan hurried upstairs.

I first went to the study and found that the brochure had been returned to its original place. I tore it up and threw it in the trash can.

I had booked two movie tickets and invited Evan to watch with me. The movie was about a twin sister who killed her sibling to replace her and live with her boyfriend. The boyfriend suspected but did not reveal the truth, and the police eventually uncovered the truth and brought the criminal to justice.

I wrapped my arms around Evan and asked, "This sister is so wicked. Do you think you would notice if someone replaced me one day?"

Evan's response was unnatural. "Of course, but unlike the male lead, I would personally send the sister to prison."

As he spoke, I froze, and Evan gave me a meaningful glance.

On the way back, while holding hands with Evan, a dog ran up to my feet.

I looked down and petted its head. "Little puppy, you are so cute. I always wanted to have one when I was young, what a pity."

Evan watched my back as I crouched and petted the dog, his expression darkening.

"Are you not allergic to dogs?"

I stopped petting the dog, stood up and looked at Evan. "No, you mistaken. Let's go."

As I walked ahead, Evan quietly called my name, "Chloe Johnson?"

"Huh? What is wrong?" I turned to look at Evan.

The reaction to a name is immediate. Did I respond quickly enough, Evan?
