Death Investigation: Who Killed Me? Chapter 1

Late at night, my husband, Evan Cooper received a call from his friend.

"Evan, a body was found in an alley on East Street. It is Chloe Johnson..."

Evan looked at me in shock.

I thought, "I was dead? Then who was lying next to him?"

——

When we arrived at the crime scene, the body had already been taken away, but the stench lingered.

Sean Anderson approached to comfort Evan, but then he saw me.

Sean stepped back in fear, swallowing nervously. "Are you a ghost?"

Evan smacked him on the head. "What are you talking about? Can you not recognize Chloe?"

"No way! I saw the face of the deceased clearly, and she looked exactly like her!" Sean exclaimed.

Evan frowned, "I do not know what is going on either."

I spoke up from behind. "Actually...I have a twin sister..."

Sean poured me a glass of water. "Chloe, I am just asking questions. Do not feel pressured."

I nodded, and Evan held my hand reassuringly.

"My sister's name is Luna Johnson. Our parents divorced when we were in high school. She went with our mom to another place and never came back."

"Are you sure that person is your sister?"

I nodded, then shook my head. The body's face was covered in scars and looked almost like me, but I could not be sure it was my sister.

Sean paused, "Chloe, let's do a DNA test."

"Yes...it is the only way now."

Leaving the police station, Evan asked why I never mentioned Luna.

"She was born weak due to complications during birth. I had to give in to her since childhood. My childhood was unhappy, so I do not have feelings for her."

Evan nodded, comforting me, saying everything was fine now.

Back home, I took two sleeping pills to fall asleep.

The next day, I made breakfast and waited for Evan to come home.

"You are back. Go wash your hands and try my new dish." I brought out the fish I had made.

Evan hugged me from behind, and his morning fatigue disappeared.

"Let me see what my Chloe has made."

"It is boiled fish that I just learned. I bought fresh fish from the market today," I said proudly to Evan.

Evan looked at the dish, and his arms stiffened.

"Why did you add cilantro? You know we do not eat it."

I smacked my forehead, feeling annoyed. "Oh no, I followed the recipe and forgot. I will take it out now."

Evan loosened his arms around me and took the fork from my hand.

"I will handle this. You just sit back and enjoy it." Evan said casually, picking out the cilantro from the fish.

During that meal, Evan seemed distracted and did not eat much before heading upstairs.

"Evan, how is Luna's case going?" I asked, watching him pause.

He did not turn around but his voice was muffled. "You said you had no feelings for her. Why do you care so much?"

"She might be my biological sister. Do not hide any news from me."

Evan did not answer and went upstairs.

At that moment, the doorbell rang.

"Ding-dong, ding-dong..."

"Evan, it is me. I have something to show Chloe."

In the living room, the three of us sat facing each other.

"We found that nine fingerprints on the body were damaged, except for the thumb. We have sent the prints for testing and should have results soon."

Though we were doing a DNA test, everyone assumed it was Luna due to the strong resemblance.

Sean took out a stack of photos from his bag.

The photos showed Luna covered in bruises, signs of beatings everywhere, and a wound on her forehead likely from hitting a wall.

My eyes reddened, thinking about how much pain did Luna endure before she died.

Evan silently looked at the photos repeatedly.

"Chloe, do not be too sad. We will find the killer and give you an explanation. I came here to promise you that."

"I trust you. Luna is my only family left in the world. I did not expect our reunion to be under such circumstances. Please catch the killer." Tears welled up in my eyes, ready to fall.

Sean was a tough guy and did not know how to comfort me and signaled Evan with his eyes.

Evan either did not notice or was lost in thought. He simply said that he was tired and went upstairs.

"Chloe, what is going on with you and Evan? He has been acting strange." Sean scratched his head and felt puzzled.

"It is nothing. Evan is just tired. Do not think too much." I brushed Sean off and saw him to the door.

When I entered the bedroom, Evan was already lying in bed.

"Why are you sleeping so early today?" I lay down beside Evan.

"Yeah..." Evan moved aside, turning his back to me.

I hugged Evan's waist, feeling his body stiffen but not pushing me away.

After a long time, Evan turned to look at me once he noticed I was asleep. He felt something was off.
