Chapter 1

My father spent his entire life favoring my younger sister—yet on his deathbed, his will left everything to me.

Every asset. Every share of the company. All of it, mine.

Monica got nothing but three sealed envelopes.

The first year, I moved into the old family estate. Monica opened the first envelope.

That same week, my villa was hit by a break-in. The losses were devastating.

Meanwhile, Monica started trading stocks and made an absolute fortune.

The second year, I took over the company my father left behind. Monica opened the second envelope.

Trouble came at me from every direction. Vandals trashed the office—smashed it to pieces—and I ended up in the hospital with injuries of my own.

Meanwhile, Monica used whatever was in that envelope to launch a competing company. Within months, it dominated the market.

The third year, my longtime boyfriend and I were finally getting married.

At the wedding, Monica opened the last envelope.

I couldn't take it anymore. I snatched it from her hands—I had to know what my father had written.

But when I read it, I dropped to my knees and sobbed.

……

"Dad! How could you do this to me?!"

I stood in the middle of my own wedding, surrounded by a roomful of guests, clutching that envelope and wailing like a child.

Everyone froze.

Aunt Vivian was the first to react. She rushed to my side and pulled me to my feet, steadying me as my legs buckled.

"Marcia Swanson, what happened? What's wrong?"

"Aunt Vivian—" My voice cracked. I shoved the envelope into her hands. "Read it. Read what he left her. Tell me how a father could be this unfair."

My sister, Monica Swanson, heard the accusation and opened her mouth to speak.

I whipped around. "Don't you dare!"

Monica closed her mouth. Aunt Vivian unfolded the note—and the color drained from her face. Her hands trembled.

"Your father... how could your father do something like this?"

I let out a bitter laugh. "He spent his whole life favoring Monica. Is there really anything he wouldn't do for her?"

I never had a mother. She was gone before I could remember. Every ounce of love I ever received came from my father.

And he gave all of it to Monica.

Now Monica stepped in front of me, her expression full of something that looked like remorse.

"I'm sorry, Marcia. I really am. But Dad's instructions... I have to follow them."

She took the microphone from the emcee's hand and turned to face the room.

"This wedding is canceled!"

The hall erupted. Gasps. Murmurs. Chairs scraping against the floor. No one had ever seen anything like it—the bride's own sister, shutting down the ceremony.

I grabbed fistfuls of my wedding gown and charged up onto the stage. My palm connected with Monica's cheek so hard the crack echoed off the walls.

"This is the most important day of my life, Monica! I will not let you ruin it!"

But she just looked at me. Not with anger. With pity.

"Whether or not I get to 'ruin' anything depends on who has the power, Marcia." Her voice was calm, steady. "And today? I'm the one calling the shots."

She clapped her hands twice.

Two rows of bodyguards flooded into the banquet hall, fanning out among the tables, ushering guests toward the exits.

"Time to go, folks. Wedding's off."

"Ms. Swanson says there's no wedding today, so there's no wedding. Period."

"Move along, please. Let's go."

I tried to push past Monica, tried to stop them—but she caught me around the waist and held me on the stage, her jaw clenched, her arms locked tight.

"Today," she said through gritted teeth, "you are going to listen to me."

She didn't let go until the last guest was gone.

By then, I had nothing left. My legs gave out, and I crumpled onto the stage floor.

My bridal makeup was destroyed—mascara streaked down my cheeks, foundation smeared across my chin. I screamed until my voice tore.

"Why? Why do you have to destroy everything I have? Money—the company—our parents' love—I lost every single one of them to you. You already have everything. So why? Why did you have to take my wedding too?"

Aunt Vivian stormed onto the stage, pointing a trembling finger at Monica.

"How could you do this to your sister? Don't you know how much this wedding meant to her?!"
