Chapter 2

Monica stared down at me, her expression unreadable, cold as stone.

"I don't care what you think. I'm following the instructions in the sealed envelope. That's all."

With that, she swept out of the venue, her entourage trailing behind her like a small army.

All she left me was the wreckage.

Walter, my groom, had been standing off to the side the entire time without saying a word. He came over now with a box of tissues and pressed them into my hands.

"It's okay, Marcia," he said softly. "It's just a wedding. We'll have another one."

The dam broke. I threw myself into his arms and sobbed—ugly, heaving sobs that I couldn't have held back if I'd tried.

Even Aunt Vivian, who rarely ever took my side, spoke up this time.

"Your sister was out of line. I'll have a talk with her when I get home."

Her words did nothing to comfort me. I knew exactly where Monica stood in our family's hierarchy.

She'd been the favored one since the day we were born. Everything she got was always better than what I received.

After I'd cried myself out and managed to pull myself together, Walter placed a hand on my shoulder and asked gently, "Marcia... what did your father actually write in that sealed envelope?"

My throat was raw from crying. I couldn't speak. So I just handed him the note.

Walter read it, and the color drained from his face.

"Is he... is he really your father? How could he do this to you?"

I knew my father had always favored Monica. I'd known it my whole life.

When we were little, he'd take her to upscale department stores for designer clothes. Me? He'd drag me to outlet malls for bargain-bin leftovers.

When school came around, he moved heaven and earth to get Monica into the best academies. As for me, he couldn't have cared less—wherever I ended up was wherever I ended up.

I'd complained about the unfairness once. Just once. It earned me a beating.

He hit me while he shouted: "You think you can compare yourself to your sister? Do you have any idea who she is and who you are?"

We were both his children. How could there possibly be a difference?

The older I got, the deeper the resentment grew.

I resented his favoritism. I resented the way he gave Monica everything—unconditionally, unreservedly—while I got nothing.

Then he got sick. Seriously sick.

Monica was busy studying abroad and couldn't be there to take care of him. I volunteered. I quit my job and devoted myself entirely to his care, hoping—praying—that he'd finally see my worth.

I spent an entire year at his bedside. And slowly, his attitude toward me began to soften.

He'd say things like, "Having a daughter is such a blessing. A daughter is a father's greatest comfort."

He'd ask how I was doing, whether I was eating enough, whether I was keeping warm.

But the moment Monica came back to visit, the words stopped. He didn't say a thing to her—just wired money straight into her account. So much money that even Monica herself would wave her hands and say, "That's enough, Dad, that's enough," before he'd finally stop.

Meanwhile, in all the months I'd spent caring for him, he hadn't given me a single dollar.

The bitterness festered. The resentment gnawed.

Then came the day my father sensed his time was running out. He summoned all of us to his bedside.

He'd specifically requested a notary to ensure the will would be legally binding.

My father was a well-known entrepreneur in the city—a titan in the metals and materials industry—so the distribution of his estate drew considerable attention. Who got the money, who got the company—every detail mattered.

A crowd of people swarmed around his hospital bed. I already knew he wouldn't leave me anything worth having, so I didn't bother pushing my way to the front.

But then his voice cut through the room: "Marcia. Marcia Swanson, come here..."

I froze. Every pair of eyes in the room turned to me as I made my way to his bedside.

My father—wasted down to skin and bone by his illness—reached out with a trembling hand and gripped mine. Then, in front of everyone, he declared his final will:

"When I die, everything I own goes to my eldest daughter, Marcia Swanson."

The words detonated like a bomb. The room erupted. Even I stood there, stunned, unable to process what I'd just heard.

Why would he leave everything to me?
