Chapter 3

I draped my coat over the chair and stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the night.

Los Angeles sprawled beneath me, colder and more distant than the skyline back home. Scattered lights glittered in isolation—millions of lives running parallel, never touching.

My phone screen lit up. A secure file package from my Executive Assistant.

[Ms. Harding, everything you requested is here.]

I didn't open it immediately. I poured a glass of water and took a slow sip.

Not because I was afraid. Because I needed the right mindset—cold, clinical, detached.

I opened the file. The volume was staggering.

Equity transfers. Shell company fund flows. Buried legal records. Private account transactions.

I scrolled through, page by page.

With every swipe, the turmoil in my gut settled into something colder. Calmer.

Every excuse I'd ever made for him disintegrated against this data.

This wasn't negligence. He hadn't been set up or outmaneuvered.

It was a roadmap. Premeditated. According to the timestamps, over a year in the making.

The most damning piece: a set of internal meeting minutes.

The date on the header marked the exact week I was hospitalized.

One line on the agenda:

[Discussion on the feasibility of the core asset divestment plan.]

I remembered those days vividly.

I'd been lying in a hospital bed, barely recovered, finalizing the Zhouyu acquisition wrap-up. I'd called him to confirm authorization codes.

His voice had been so gentle. Rest, he'd said. Focus on your health.

"Don't worry. The company has me."

I finally understood. "The company has me" didn't mean he was covering for me.

It meant he was erasing me. He'd already begun paving the road for my exit.

My phone vibrated. A message from Walter.

[When are you landing?]

[Things are a bit chaotic with the Board.]

I stared at the text, a humorless smile touching my lips.

Chaotic. Of course it was.

He hadn't expected me to see the cards he was holding.

I closed the documents and typed a reply to my Executive Assistant.

[Keep investigating.]

[No boundaries. Dig everything up.]

The "Sent" notification appeared. I leaned back and exhaled.

No anger. Just the relief of clarity. The direction was finally set.

At two in the morning, my phone rang. The General Counsel.

His tone was guarded. Clearly, rumors were already circulating.

"Ms. Harding, if we continue pulling this thread... the audit may implicate Mr. Delgado's personal liability."

"I know."

"Then... should we flag this for him? Communicate in advance?"

I looked at the darkness pressing against the glass.

"Follow the protocol," I said. "Process it exactly as the law requires."

"And the rest?"

"There is no 'rest.'"

I ended the call. Sleep was out of the question.

I opened my laptop and began building a timeline. Three threads of data.

First: the company's asset outflow.

Second: his escalating relationship with Hailey.

Third: the systematic marginalization of my authority.

On the screen, the three lines converged. Overlapped perfectly.

The picture was so clear it left no room for denial.

As dawn broke, an anonymous email landed in my inbox.

No subject. No signature. One sentence.

[You think you're stepping down, but you're being pushed out.]

I stared at it for a long time.

Then dragged it into my backup folder.

No need for rage. Rage was messy.

The truth was a far more efficient weapon.

I shut down the computer.

Morning light sliced through the curtains, illuminating dust motes in the air.

My mind was crystal clear.

From this moment on, I would not yield another inch. I would give no one another opportunity to hurt me.

By the time I returned to the apartment, it was already 10 p.m.

The rain had stopped, leaving the city looking scrubbed and raw. Scattered lights flickered back to life outside the window.

I tossed my coat onto the sofa, too exhausted to change my shoes, and poured myself a glass of water.

One sip in, my phone vibrated again.

Walter. Still.
