Chapter 2

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely grip the steering wheel of my Mercedes G-Wagon. The drive from the Hamptons to Alex’s old Upper East Side apartment—the one he’d owned before we married, the one he said he kept for "business overflow"—was a blur of tail lights and roaring silence in my head.

*Your birthday.*

Of course it was my birthday. 1029. He’d said it was a sweet reminder of me, always with him. Now the thought made me nauseous.

I parallel-parked a block away, my movements robotic. The doorman in the sleek, art-deco building knew me. "Mrs. Sterling," he nodded, his expression carefully neutral. Did he know? Had he seen *her* come and go?

"Just picking up something for Alexander," I said, my voice brittle.

The elevator ride to the penthouse felt interminable. I stared at my reflection in the brass doors—the perfectly blow-dried hair, the simple black cocktail dress that cost more than most people’s rent. A beautifully packaged lie.

I stood before the familiar door. Took a breath that did nothing to calm me. Punched in 1-0-2-9.

The electronic lock chirped, green light flashing. *Access Granted.*

The door swung open into darkness. I flicked on the lights.

The apartment was immaculate, as always. Modern furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing a glittering view of the city. But it didn’t smell like Alex’s cologne or the cleaning products the weekly service used. It smelled like… lavender and patchouli. And something else. A cheap, floral perfume.

My heels clicked on the hardwood as I walked in, a trespasser in a life I thought I knew. I went to the bedroom first.

The bed was made. But on Alex’s nightstand, where there used to be a biography of Churchill, was a stack of books: *The Celestine Prophecy*, *A Course in Miracles*, *Sacred Pregnancy*. My throat tightened.

I opened the top drawer of his nightstand. And there they were. Polaroids. The kind from a vintage-style instant camera.

The first one: Alex and Cecilia, cheeks pressed together, grinning. She was holding the camera. The time stamp on the white border: *9 MONTHS AGO.*

The second: Cecilia, posing in what looked like a yoga studio, wearing leggings and a tiny crop top. *7 MONTHS AGO.*

The third: Alex, shirtless in this very bed, asleep. Cecilia’s hand, with its silver rings, resting on his chest. The date: *5 MONTHS AGO.*

The photos fell from my numb fingers, scattering on the floor. Five months ago. Four months ago. Three. A continuous timeline of betrayal that started right after my parents’ funeral. The "business trips" to L.A. The "late nights at the office." The unfamiliar scent of lavender oil on his skin he’d blamed on a new spa.

I stumbled into the walk-in closet. Alex’s suits hung in orderly rows. And beside them, nestled among his cashmere sweaters, were dresses. Flowy, printed, cheap-looking dresses. Cecilia’s size. I ran my fingers over one, the fabric rough and synthetic.

Then I saw the bathroom light was on. I hadn’t turned it on. I pushed the door open.

The counter was cluttered with crystals, essential oil bottles, and tarot cards. My eyes scanned the mess and landed on the small trash can beside the toilet. Something white and plastic poked out.

I didn’t want to look. I had to look.

I bent down and pulled it out. A pregnancy test. The digital kind.

The little screen clearly showed two words: PREGNANT.

A violent, physical wave of nausea hit me. I braced myself against the cool marble counter, staring at my pale, horrified reflection in the mirror. The room spun.

*He’s having a child with her. The "bridge child." It’s not some future spiritual plan. It’s already happening.*

The evidence was a physical weight in my chest. I pulled out my phone. With cold, deliberate precision, I took pictures. The Polaroids on the floor. The dresses in the closet. The pregnancy test in my hand. Every shot felt like another incision.

I had to get out. Now. I shoved the test back in the trash, gathered the photos, and strode back through the apartment, my earlier shock hardening into a block of ice in my gut.

I yanked open the front door—and almost collided with her.

Cecilia stood there, key in hand, a reusable grocery bag hanging from her arm. She looked surprised for a second, then that serene, knowing smile returned to her lips. Her gaze flicked past me into the apartment, then back to my face.

"Oh, Amelia," she said, her voice soft, melodious. "Alex didn’t tell you? This apartment is… mine now. For me and the baby. He thought I needed a peaceful space." She tilted her head, her eyes wide with faux sympathy. "You understand, don’t you? It’s for the family’s harmony."
