Chapter 3

I didn’t remember the drive back to our Tribeca penthouse. The ice in my gut had spread, freezing everything—my tears, my panic, my pain. All that was left was a sharp, crystalline clarity.

Alex was already home, pouring himself a scotch at the wet bar. He’d changed into sweatpants and a t-shirt, looking like any other husband after a long day. The normalcy of it was its own kind of violence.

"Where have you been?" he asked, not turning around. "You left the party abruptly. Mother was offended."

"I went to the apartment," I said, my voice flat.

He turned then, the glass halfway to his lips. I saw the flicker in his eyes—guilt, quickly masked by irritation. "What? Why?"

"The passcode is still my birthday. How sentimental." I walked further into the room, placing my phone on the coffee table, screen down. I’d already opened the voice memo app. The red recording dot was a tiny, beating heart of accusation. "I met Cecilia. She says the apartment is hers now. For her and the baby."

Alex sighed, a long-suffering sound. He set his glass down. "Amelia, you have to understand. This isn’t about you and me. Not really."

"Explain it to me." I crossed my arms, leaning against the back of the sofa. "Explain how you knocking up a crystal-waving stranger isn’t about you and me."

"Don’t be crude." His tone hardened. "Cecilia is here to *help* us. The family. The spiritual audit… the energy is real, Amelia. The losses we’ve suffered—"

"My parents," I cut in, the words like chips of ice. "Are they part of the ‘losses’? Part of the ‘curse’?"

He had the decency to flinch. "Of course not. That was a tragedy. But the financial strain, the shadow on our legacy… Cecilia is the key. The child… it’s a necessity. A bridge."

I stared at him, really looked at him. This man I’d loved, who had whispered promises in the dark. He believed this. Or he’d convinced himself he did. It was more palatable than admitting he’d simply fallen for a con artist and got her pregnant.

"Let me get this straight," I said, my tone dangerously calm. "To fix your family’s bad investments, you *must* have a child with another woman. Is that the requirement? The *only* solution?"

"It’s not that simple—" he began, frustration edging his voice.

"Say it, Alex." I took a step closer. "I need to hear you say the words. You need to impregnate another woman to purify the Sterling energy field. Is that correct?"

"Yes! God, Amelia, stop twisting it!" he exploded, his composure cracking. "It’s a sacrifice for the greater good! I love *you*. But I have a duty to my family that transcends… this." He gestured vaguely between us.

*Click.* I stopped the recording on my phone.

He saw the movement, saw me pick up the phone. His eyes narrowed. "What are you doing?"

"Documenting my husband’s explanation for his infidelity and impending fatherhood," I said, backing toward the hall. "For my lawyer."

His face darkened with rage. "You bitch." He lunged for me, grabbing for the phone. "Give me that!"

I stumbled back, twisting away. "Get off me!" We grappled, a chaotic dance of anger and fear. He was stronger. His hand closed around my wrist, yanking me toward him. I wrenched my arm free with all my strength, but the momentum sent me backward.

My heel caught on the edge of the Persian rug. Time slowed. I saw his face, contorted in fury, not concern. I hit the first step of the sunken living room staircase, my ankle twisting with a sickening pop, and tumbled down three steps before landing in a heap on the floor.

Pain, white-hot and immediate, shot through my ankle and side. I gasped, seeing stars.

Alex stood at the top of the steps, breathing heavily. He looked down at me, his expression unreadable.

My phone, still clutched in my hand, buzzed. Then his buzzed on the bar.

He glanced at his screen, and his face changed. All the anger drained, replaced by urgent anxiety. "It’s Cecilia. She’s spotting. She’s at the hospital."

He looked from his phone to me, crumpled on the floor. A calculation took less than a second.

"I have to go," he said, already turning to grab his keys from the bowl. "It’s the baby."

He didn’t ask if I was okay. Didn’t offer to help me up. He just walked out, the front door closing with a soft, final click.

I lay there, the cold from the floor seeping into my bones, listening to the silence of the multi-million-dollar tomb he’d left me in.

Hours later, curled on the sofa with a bag of frozen peas on my swollen ankle, I saw it. A push notification from *The New York Whisper*, the city’s most vicious gossip site.

The headline screamed: STIRLING SCION’S SPIRITUAL SIDEKICK IN BABY SCARE!

There was a photo, grainy but unmistakable. Alex, his arm protectively around a visibly upset Cecilia, walking into Lenox Hill Hospital. The caption: *Alexander Sterling rushes new-age muse Cecilia to hospital amid pregnancy concerns. Notable by her absence: wife Amelia Sterling. Is the "cursed" society wife already out of the picture?*

I scrolled down. The comments were a torrent of gleeful speculation.

I closed the app, my heart a cold, heavy stone. Then, on a whim born of sheer desperation, I opened a different app. A home security app I’d insisted on installing a year ago after a series of burglaries in the neighborhood. It was linked to tiny, discreet cameras at the entrances of all our properties—including the UES apartment. Alex had laughed at my paranoia.

My finger hovered, then tapped on the live feed for the apartment.

The screen loaded. It was the living room, viewed from above the bookcase. The lights were low. And there they were.

Cecilia was on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket, her head on Alex’s shoulder. He was stroking her hair, his face a mask of tender concern I hadn’t seen in months.

He kissed her forehead and murmured something the microphone barely picked up. But I heard it. I heard it perfectly.

"Don’t worry, my darling. She’ll never threaten your place. You’re the mother of my child."
