Chapter 2

The elevator ride to the eighteenth floor felt eternal. Each floor that passed brought me closer to answers I wasn't sure I wanted to hear. My hands gripped the property management documents so tightly the paper had begun to wrinkle at the edges.

When the doors opened, I stepped into the familiar hallway of my building—except nothing felt familiar anymore. The burgundy carpet beneath my feet seemed foreign, the soft lighting harsh against my eyes. I walked toward Unit 1802, my unit, with measured steps that echoed my thundering heartbeat.

I pressed the doorbell, then knocked when no one answered immediately. The sound of footsteps approached from inside, and I straightened my shoulders, preparing for whatever confrontation awaited.

The door opened to reveal a woman I recognized but had never spoken to—Evie Harris, Marshall's sister-in-law. Her dark hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, and she wore comfortable clothes that suggested she'd been living here, not just visiting.

"Sofia?" Her eyes widened with what looked like genuine surprise. "What are you doing here?"

"This is my condo," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos in my chest. "The question is, what are you doing here?"

Evie's face crumpled, and tears began streaming down her cheeks. "Oh God, I knew this would happen. I told Marshall this was wrong, but he said—" She covered her face with her hands, shoulders shaking.

I pushed past her into my own home, and the sight that greeted me made my stomach drop. Children's toys scattered across my pristine hardwood floors. Family photos I'd never seen before lined my mantelpiece—photos of Evie, a young girl, and Marshall. Marshall's jacket hung on my coat rack. A child's backpack sat by the door.

"How long have you been living here?" I demanded, spinning to face her.

"It's not what you think," Evie sobbed, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. "I'm only staying temporarily. My daughter Nina needs to be enrolled in the district school, and this address—Marshall said it would just be for a few weeks until we could sort out the paperwork."

"Your daughter?" The words felt foreign in my mouth.

"She's seven. She needs stability, Sofia. I had nowhere else to go after her father—" She stopped abruptly, her eyes darting away from mine.

"After her father what?" I stepped closer, my attorney instincts taking over. "Who is Nina's father, Evie?"

"That's not—I mean, it's complicated. I can't—" Her tears came harder now, but something about them felt performative, rehearsed.

The sound of a key in the lock made us both freeze. The door swung open, and Marshall walked in as if he owned the place. Which, according to the fraudulent documents, he apparently did.

"Sofia?" His voice carried surprise, but his eyes held something else—calculation. "What are you doing here?"

Before I could answer, he turned to someone behind him in the hallway. "Could you come in for a moment? I'm sorry, but we have a situation."

Two building management staff members entered—the property manager I'd spoken with on the phone and a security guard. Marshall's expression shifted into something I'd never seen before: cold, authoritative, and utterly convincing.

"I'm sorry you had to witness this," Marshall said to them, his voice heavy with what sounded like genuine concern. "This is Sofia, my ex-wife. She's been having some... difficulties since our divorce. Mental health issues, unfortunately."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I opened my mouth to protest, but Marshall continued, his voice gaining strength and conviction.

"She's been harassing Evie and me, showing up at our home uninvited. I've been trying to handle this privately, but clearly, we need to involve building security." He ran a hand through his hair, the picture of a man at his wit's end. "I have all the documentation showing this unit was legally transferred to me as part of our divorce settlement."

"That's a lie," I managed, but my voice sounded weak even to my own ears. "I was never divorced. We're still married. This is my property."

Marshall's expression softened into something that might have looked like pity to an outside observer. "Sofia, please. You know that's not true. You've been struggling with reality since the breakdown. Evie and I have been trying to help you, but this behavior is escalating."

The building staff exchanged glances, clearly uncomfortable with the domestic drama unfolding before them. I saw doubt creeping into their eyes as they looked at me—the woman who claimed ownership but appeared increasingly unstable.

My phone rang, cutting through the tension like a blade. I glanced at the screen: Ariana Murphy, my colleague. With shaking hands, I answered.

"Sofia?" Ariana's voice was urgent. "I've been doing some research on that property issue you mentioned. I found something you need to know about immediately."

"Can this wait—"

"No, it can't. I found records of a child—Nina Coleman. Born seven years ago. Marshall Coleman is listed as the father, and Evie Harris as the mother."

The phone nearly slipped from my fingers. Seven years. Their affair had been going on for seven years, and they had a child together. A child who was now living in my stolen home.

I looked up to find Marshall and Evie watching me intently, their faces pale. The building staff remained by the door, uncertain witnesses to a truth that was finally beginning to surface.
