Chapter 3

The next morning, I returned to Skyline Tower with a folder full of documentation—my original purchase agreement, mortgage records, tax statements. Everything proving the condo was mine alone.

I approached the entrance with my key card ready, the same card I'd used for years. When I pressed it against the scanner, nothing happened. No green light. No welcoming beep. Just silence.

I tried again. And again.

"Ma'am?" A security guard I didn't recognize stepped forward. "Can I help you?"

"My card isn't working." I kept my voice steady, professional. "I'm Sofia Romero. Unit 1802."

His expression shifted—not with recognition, but with something that looked like pity mixed with wariness. "Ms. Romero, I'm going to need you to step back from the entrance."

"Excuse me?"

"We received instructions yesterday about you." He positioned himself between me and the door, hand hovering near his radio. "You're not authorized to enter this building."

The words didn't make sense. I'd lived here for five years. I knew every doorman, every maintenance worker. "There must be some mistake. This is my property."

"The owner of Unit 1802 is registered as Marshall Coleman. Authorized resident is Evie Harris." He pulled out a tablet, showing me a screen with Evie's photo and facial recognition data. "Your access was revoked yesterday morning."

Revoked. As if I were some guest whose welcome had expired.

"I need to speak with management immediately."

"They're expecting legal documentation if you wish to dispute the ownership records." His tone wasn't unkind, but it was firm. "Until then, I can't let you through."

I stood there on the sidewalk outside my own building, watching people come and go, and felt something inside me harden into steel. Marshall hadn't just stolen my property—he'd erased me from it completely.

---

The police station smelled like burnt coffee and stale paperwork. I'd been to dozens of precincts over my legal career, but never as a victim. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as I sat across from Detective Winston Butler, spreading documents across his desk like evidence at trial.

"Walk me through this again," he said, leaning back in his chair. His eyes were sharp, taking in every detail.

"My husband forged my signature on property transfer documents." I pointed to the signature on the fraudulent paperwork the management company had finally provided. "That's not my handwriting. I can provide samples for comparison."

Detective Butler picked up the document, studying it closely. "And you never signed anything regarding this property?"

"Never. The condo was my pre-marital property. I purchased it two years before our marriage with my own funds." I pulled out my original deed. "This shows sole ownership under my maiden name—Romero."

He compared the two documents, his jaw tightening. "This is contract fraud. Potentially identity theft as well." He made notes on a yellow pad. "Tell me about the current occupants."

"Evie Harris—she claims to be my husband's sister-in-law, but I recently discovered she's actually the mother of his seven-year-old daughter." The words still tasted bitter. "They've been having an affair for at least seven years. She's been registered with facial recognition access while mine was revoked."

"And your husband is—"

"Marshall Coleman. He told building management I'm his mentally unstable ex-wife. We're not divorced. We're still legally married." I handed him our marriage certificate.

Detective Butler's expression darkened. "So he's running a systematic fraud scheme and attempting to discredit you to cover it up."

"That's exactly what's happening."

He gathered the documents, already reaching for his phone. "I'm opening an official investigation. This is clearly fraudulent transfer of property. I'll need to interview the building management staff who witnessed yesterday's confrontation, and we'll need handwriting analysis on these signatures."

For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something loosen in my chest. "Thank you, Detective."

"I'll be in touch within forty-eight hours." He stood, shaking my hand firmly. "Ms. Romero, I want you to document everything—every interaction with your husband, every attempted contact. This is going to trial, and we're going to make sure he faces consequences."

---

I was meeting with a new client—a woman seeking custody of her children—when my assistant knocked urgently on my office door.

"Sofia, I'm so sorry, but there's someone here—"

The door pushed open before she could finish. Marshall's mother swept in like a storm, her designer handbag swinging, her face arranged in an expression of maternal concern that didn't reach her cold eyes.

"Sofia, darling." Her voice dripped false warmth. "We need to talk about this terrible misunderstanding."

My client looked between us, uncomfortable. I stood quickly. "Mrs. Coleman, I'm in the middle of a consultation—"

"This can't wait." She positioned herself beside my desk as if she had every right to be there. "I've just heard the most disturbing news about police investigations and fraud charges. Surely we can resolve this privately, as family?"

"I'm calling security," I said quietly.

"Think about what you're doing to our family's reputation." Her smile never wavered, but her words sharpened. "Marshall made a mistake, but destroying him won't bring back your marriage. Drop these ridiculous charges before this gets uglier."

My client gathered her things, clearly wanting to escape. I felt fury building in my throat.

"Get out of my office."

"I'll be back tomorrow," Marshall's mother said pleasantly, as if we'd just had tea. "And the day after. Until you come to your senses and stop this nonsense."

She left, leaving the scent of expensive perfume and threats hanging in the air.
