Chapter 2

The digital keypad flashed red. A flat, sharp beep echoed across the porch.

"Did you push the wrong star, Clara?" Sophie asked, peering up at the shiny nickel panel. She shifted her weight, hugging her small plush bunny against the pleats of her yellow dress.

"No, sweetie. Just fingers slipping."

I tapped in the six digits again: our wedding date.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.* Red lights blinked three times.

*Access Denied.*

I set my shoulder against the heavy oak door and shoved. Locked tight. Inside, the security hub emitted a muffled chime, signaling that the master credentials had been updated from an off-site device.

My phone buzzed in my palm. An alert from the bank application slid across the top of the glass: *Joint Checking 4091 has been suspended by primary account holder.* Beneath it sat a text from Ryan.

*You’re having an emotional episode, Clara. Taking that orphan from court proves you aren't rational. Hand Sophie over to child services today, check yourself into a clinic for a weekend of rest, and I’ll unlock the front door. We can talk about your allowance tomorrow. Otherwise, you don't have a roof.*

My hands didn't shake. The cold numbness from the courtroom had burned off, leaving behind a hard, icy clarity.

"Is Ryan inside?" Sophie asked, her voice dipping low. She retreated two steps down the porch stairs, eyes glued to the dark living room windows. "Is he going to yell again?"

"He isn't here," I said, sliding the phone into my pocket without typing a single letter in reply. "And we aren't going in."

"What about my yellow shoes? The ones for church?"

"We'll get better ones." I reached down and scooped her up into my arms. Her small sneakers pressed against my hip. "We're taking a trip."

"Where?"

"Somewhere far away from this porch."

A passing yellow cab slowed near our curb, its roof light glowing through the graying afternoon. I threw out my free hand. The tires hissed against the asphalt as it pulled up to the curb.

"Oak Creek," I told the driver as I climbed into the back seat and pulled Sophie onto my lap. "The old depot road."

The driver glanced back into the rearview mirror. "That's forty miles out of the metro zone, lady. Cash or card upfront."

"Cash," I said, pulling two twenty-dollar bills from the emergency envelope tucked inside my coat liner—the only money Ryan hadn't been able to touch. "Just start driving."

By the time the cab crossed the county line, the sky had split open. Sheets of rain hammered the roof, drowning out the drone of the highway. Sophie fell asleep against my chest twenty miles in, her forehead warm against my collarbone.

When the cab finally stopped under the rusted streetlight at the corner of Oak Creek's main street, the clock on the dashboard read half past six.

"End of the line," the driver grunted. "Can't go down the alley with the puddle depth."

"Thank you."

I shielded Sophie beneath my coat as I stepped onto the flooded pavement. The wind drove water straight into our faces, soaking my hair in seconds. The shopfronts along the block were mostly dark, marked with faded plywood or dusty *For Lease* signs.

Except one.

At the corner of Elm sat the narrow, three-story brick building with peeling forest-green trim: *The Starlight Page*. In the bay window, stacks of oversized storybooks leaned precariously beneath a hand-painted wooden sign that read: *Closing Sale – 50% Off Everything*.

My legs moved before my brain could argue against it.

I pushed the wooden door. The overhead brass chime gave a thin, brassy ring that cut through the roar of the downpour.

The air smelled of cedar sawdust, dry paper, and peppermint tea.

Behind the checkout counter, a pair of worn canvas work boots shifted off an open carton. A man stood up, a black marker balanced behind his ear, his brown hair dusted with cardboard shavings.

Caleb froze.

The marker slipped from behind his ear and bounced off the wooden counter, rolling onto the floorboards between us.

Four years.

Caleb had been my first love before Ryan, and afterward, the friend I trusted more than anyone.

Four years since Ryan had gone through my phone, found Caleb’s name in my recent calls, and forced me to choose between a divorce attorney and cutting Caleb out entirely. I had hit the block button right in front of Ryan's face while Caleb’s voicemails were still blinking on my screen.

"Clara?" Caleb said. His voice was lower than I remembered, rough around the edges.

I stood in the center of his rug, water pooling around my sodden flat shoes. Rain dripped from my chin onto Sophie’s shoulder. Sophie stirred against me, rubbing her eyes with the back of her wet sleeve.

"I know I shouldn't be here," I began, my voice cracking slightly. "I know I have no right to show up at your door after—"

"Shut the front door," Caleb interrupted. He didn't look angry; his dark eyes were fixed on the shivering child in my arms. "The draft is coming straight through."

I turned awkwardly with my hip, nudging the door until the latch clicked.

Caleb didn't ask why I was soaked. He didn't ask who the little girl was, or where my wedding rings had gone, or why I had vanished from his life forty-eight months ago without a single warning call.

He moved from behind the counter, crossed the narrow aisle, and pulled a key from the ring on his belt loop. He bypassed the register entirely and unlocked the narrow wooden door beside the children's section—the private stairwell leading up to the second-floor loft.

"Up," he said softly, gesturing toward the stairs.

"Caleb, listen to me," I whispered, holding Sophie tighter. "Ryan froze my accounts. We have nowhere else to stay tonight, but I can pay you back as soon as my school paycheck deposits on Friday—"

"Did I ask you for money, Clara?" Caleb cut in, his eyes meeting mine for the first time. The intensity in them made the breath catch in my throat. He pulled two thick, plush cotton towels from a supply cubby behind the stair rail and draped one around my shoulders before wrapping the second gently around Sophie, tucking the terrycloth beneath her chin.

Sophie looked up at him through her wet eyelashes. "Are you a giant?"

A faint, tired smile touched the corner of Caleb's mouth. "Just tall, kiddo. Come on out of the damp."

He guided us up the wooden steps. The second floor was warm, heated by an iron radiator that hissed quietly in the corner. Shelves lined every wall, filled with old illustrated classics, a deep velvet sofa sat by an unlit brick fireplace, and an open kitchen corner smelled faintly of roasted coffee beans.

Caleb pulled a knitted blanket off the sofa and laid it out across the cushions.

"Put her down here," he instructed, his tone calm and steady. "I’ll get the kettle going."

I lowered Sophie onto the cushions. She immediately burrowed under the wool, clutching her damp bunny.

"I'm sorry," I said, staying on my feet near the edge of the rug. My soaked hem dripped onto his floorboards. "I blocked your number. I let him erase you because I thought I could keep the peace."

Caleb stopped by the counter, his back to me as he struck a match to light the stove burner. The small blue flame flared to life, casting his profile in sharp relief against the dark windowpane.

"Your husband is a coward," Caleb said quietly, placing the kettle over the fire. He turned around, leaning his tall frame against the counter, folding his arms across his chest. His gaze traveled over the exhaustion carved into my face, then settled on the red mark around my ring finger where the bands used to sit.

"I heard he got a promotion last winter," Caleb added. "The local paper ran a piece about the new Holloway branch downtown."

"He threw us out," I said, the words tasting like lead. "He's having a baby with Madison. He tried to send Sophie back to the foster intake center this morning."

Caleb’s jaw tightened until a muscle twitched beneath his skin, but his voice stayed level. "And you?"

"I took her anyway," I said, looking him dead in the eyes. "The judge gave me temporary custody for forty-five days. If I can't prove I have a home and a stable life by then, they’ll take her. But I don't have a penny right now, Caleb. Not one damn penny."

Caleb walked across the room, stopped two inches in front of me, and pulled the damp strands of hair away from my forehead. His touch was warm, steady, and completely devoid of hesitation.

"I told you this place would always be yours," Caleb said. "Nothing changed that. Not four years. Not him."

Before I could answer, a loud, metallic rap banged against the street-level glass downstairs.

Down in the dark shop, someone was pounding on the locked front door.
