Chapter 3

"It's just the old alley gate rattling in the storm," Caleb said, setting a steaming mug on the low table. "The latch gives out when the wind kicks up."

He had already checked the downstairs entrance. Outside, the rain continued to beat against the dark windowpanes, but the chill stayed locked outside.

On the deep sofa, Sophie let out a soft sigh, her eyelids fluttering shut. Her fingers finally uncurled from the fabric of her damp yellow dress, leaving her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

"She hasn't slept since five this morning," I whispered, pulling the wool throw over her feet.

"You haven't either," Caleb observed. He sat in the worn armchair across from us, extending a mug of peppermint tea toward me. "Drink. You're still pale."

I cradled the hot ceramic in both palms. The steam warmed my face, but the knot in my stomach stayed tight.

"Ryan didn't just walk away from the adoption, Caleb," I said, meeting his dark eyes. "He brought Madison to the courthouse. She’s five months along. He stood twenty feet from Sophie and called her damaged."

Caleb's knuckles tightened against the wooden armrest. "And the court allowed him to drop the petition?"

"He revoked his signature before the judge sat down. I requested an emergency transfer to a single-parent adoption." I swallowed against the dryness in my throat. "Judge Martinez gave me forty-five days. A temporary custody order. If I can't prove I have independent housing and verifiable income before the hearing, the county takes her."

"You have your teaching salary."

"For now. I had to request emergency unpaid leave today, and I don't know how long the district will hold my position. Ryan’s name is on the mortgage. He locked me out of the house by noon, and he drained our joint savings before I could catch a cab." A bitter chuckle broke from my lips—not out of humor, but sheer disbelief. "I have eighty dollars in cash and a handful of crayons in my tote bag."

Caleb stayed quiet for three seconds, his gaze steady on mine. "Why Oak Creek, Clara?"

The direct question pierced through my defenses. My grip on the mug tightened.

"Because I didn't know where else to run," I admitted, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "And I owe you an apology. A real one. Four years ago, when Ryan demanded I cut ties with you... I let him take my phone. I watched him delete your number. I gave up our friendship because I thought appeasing him would keep my marriage intact."

"Did it?"

"No," I said, a flush of shame rising along my neck. "It just turned me into an accomplice in my own isolation. I was a coward, Caleb. You spent years helping me build my portfolio, and I discarded you the second my husband raised his voice."

Caleb leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "Are you finished beating yourself up?"

I blinked, thrown off by his calm tone. "What?"

"I don't care about four years ago," Caleb said, his voice firm and even. "I care about the woman sitting on my sofa who walked out on a wealthy sociopath to protect an orphan. The past is done. Let’s talk about your forty-five days."

"What about them?"

He rose from the armchair, stepped over to his work desk, and pulled a printed ledger along with a blank legal pad from a drawer.

"The children’s wing of the store is expanding into regional folk tales this winter," Caleb said, laying the papers flat before me. "I’ve been looking for an in-house illustrator for our limited print runs and community workshop flyers. The position pays three thousand a month, standard retainer."

My heart pounded against my ribs. "Caleb, you don't have to fabricate a job for me. I saw the closing banner in your front window."

"The banner is for old inventory clearance, not bankruptcy," he replied without missing a beat. "And you aren't doing charity work. Look at the terms. Forty full-color plates by mid-month. Can you draw them or not?"

"You know I can."

"Then sign the contract," Caleb instructed, sliding a pen toward my fingers. "Tomorrow morning, I’ll stamp it with the store's corporate seal and write an advance check. When your social worker asks for documented employment, you hand her an active freelance contract with guaranteed monthly milestones."

A sudden weight lifted from my lungs. My fingers curled around the pen, and I signed my full legal name across the bottom line.

A quiet whimper broke the silence from the couch. Sophie stirred, her eyebrows drawing together in distress.

"Clara?" she muttered, her eyes half-open and glazed with lingering panic. "Are they locking the gate?"

Before I could set my mug down, Caleb was already moving. He knelt beside the edge of the sofa, keeping his head well below hers so he didn't loom over her.

"Nobody is locking anything, Sophie," Caleb murmured, his voice dipping into a calm, gentle rhythm. He reached for a brightly colored picture book resting on the end table—a tale about a sea otter building an island out of river stones. "Do you know what otters do when the tide gets high?"

Sophie stared at him, her small frame relaxing by inches. "What do they do?"

"They hold paws," Caleb answered softly, opening to the first page. "So they don't drift apart in the dark."

He began reading, turning each thick paper page with quiet care. Sophie rested her head back against the pillow, her eyes locked on the watercolor illustrations. Within five minutes, her breathing slowed to a peaceful, even tempo.

Sitting in the warm lamplight, watching Caleb soothe a terrified little girl who wasn't his responsibility, an unfamiliar sensation settled into my chest. For seven years, my house had felt like an eggshell factory waiting to shatter under Ryan's next mood. Here, in this dusty loft smelling of paper and cedar, I felt safe. Truly safe.

My phone vibrated sharply on the table, breaking the spell.

I picked it up. A social media notification lit the screen. Several mutual friends from the city had forwarded the same link, along with frantic question marks.

I opened Ryan's profile.

Twenty minutes ago, he had posted a picture. It showed the silhouette of a woman walking away down a dark gravel path, her coat disheveled, a child barely visible beside her.

Above the image, Ryan had written:

*Devastated to share that Clara has suffered an acute psychiatric break following our private struggles. This morning she fled the courthouse with a ward of the state without authorization. We are praying for her safe return and urgent medical intervention. Please contact authorities if sighted.*

Below it, the comment section was already exploding.

*Oh my god, Clara looked completely normal last week!*

*Is the child in danger? Ryan, stay strong!*

*Someone call the state troopers! She’s mentally unstable!*

My teeth clenched. He wasn't just trying to hurt me; he was laying the legal groundwork to prove me unfit before Brenda Cooper stepped foot into my life again.

"What is it?" Caleb asked, noticing my rigid posture.

"He's trying to label me crazy on the record," I said, showing him the glowing screen. "He wants an amber alert issued so the police rip Sophie away tonight."

"Call his attorney," Caleb said grimly. "We’ll send a cease and desist."

"No," I replied, a cold resolve taking over. "Attorneys take forty-eight hours. Ryan thrives on controlling the narrative in public."

I tapped the uploaded photograph. Ryan had made another mistake: the post linked to the original file in our shared family cloud instead of a flattened copy. I saved that original to my device, opened the file properties, and ran a metadata inspection tool.

The data flashed instantly across the screen:

*File Name: IMG_8821.CR2*

*Date Taken: June 14, 2025, 19:42 EST.*

*Location: Holloway Summer Cabin, Lake George.*

*Subject: Madison Vance (Archive).*

I let out a low, humorless sound. He hadn't even bothered to scrape the file headers. He had recycled an old photograph of Madison walking through his family's lake property from last summer to pose as me running into the night.

Without typing a single word of defense or emotional plea, I took a clean screenshot of the EXIF data—showing the exact capture date from last summer—and pasted it directly into the top comment on Ryan’s viral post.

Underneath the screenshot, I added one line:

*Check the time stamp, Ryan. Your mistress took that walk last summer. Don't invent an amber alert to hide your own court-sanctioned abandonment.*

I hit post.

The reaction was instantaneous. Within forty seconds, the comments flipped violently.

*Wait... this photo is from June?*

*Look at the file details! It’s not Clara!*

*Did he just invent a psychiatric emergency to smear his wife?*

*What did you do to that child, Ryan?*

Before the public could scroll past the mounting outrage, my phone screen flashed violently.

Incoming Call: *Ryan*.

I tapped accept and brought the phone to my ear.

"You miserable bitch!" Ryan screamed, his voice vibrating through the speaker loud enough to echo in the room. "Delete that comment right now! My firm’s partners are on that page! Do you have any idea what you just—"

"Goodbye, Ryan," I said cleanly.

I tapped the red icon, ended the call, and hit *Block Contact*.

Silence filled the loft once more.

Across the room, Caleb watched me, the edge of his mouth curving slightly. "He's going to come looking for you."

"Let him," I said, setting the phone facedown on the wood.

Downstairs, the brass shop bell chimed.
