Chapter 2

I lay there for a long time before I moved.

The ceiling was the same ceiling it had always been. White. A small water stain near the corner that Mario kept saying he would call someone about and never did. The morning light came through the curtains the way it always did, slow and pale, touching everything gently.

Beside me, Mario slept.

He slept the way he always slept. On his back, one arm thrown over his face, breathing steady and deep and completely unbothered. I used to think that was peaceful. I used to curl into his side and feel safe next to that stillness. Now I lay three inches away from him and watched his chest rise and fall and felt nothing except the quiet hum of something I was working very hard not to name.

I got up without waking him.

The kitchen was cool and smelled faintly of the candle I had burned the night before — cedarwood and amber, a scent I chose myself from a boutique on Peachtree that Mario had never noticed enough to mention. I stood at the counter and waited for the coffee to brew and looked around the kitchen I had picked every single fixture in.

The cabinet handles. The pendant lights above the island. The tile backsplash that took me three weekends to decide on. I had sent Mario photos of options for months and he always said "whatever you think, babe," and so I thought. And I chose. And I built this kitchen, this apartment, this life, and then I invited him into it and called it ours.

I picked up my coffee and drank it while he slept.

He had no idea who paid the security deposit on this apartment. He assumed we split it evenly. We didn't. He had no idea who quietly arranged the job interview that landed him at Stonebridge two years ago, when he was between roles and too proud to say how much the gap was hurting him. I had made a call and kept my name out of it. Let him believe he got the role on his own merit, because he had enough pride to fill a room and I loved him too much then to take that from him.

Then I told him I worked there too. Business Development Associate. He didn't ask questions. He never looked deeper.

He drove to Stonebridge every morning and built a career inside a company that belonged to the woman sleeping beside him every night.

I thought about that while I finished my coffee.

Nathaniel's office smelled like books and strong tea. He was already behind his desk when I arrived at eight-thirty, suit pressed, reading glasses on, two cups waiting. He was that kind of man. Prepared before the conversation started.

I sat down and told him everything without flinching.

He listened with his hands folded and his face very still. When I finished, he was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "How long?"

"The affair? Three months." I folded my hands in my lap. "The wedding is in two weeks."

He looked at me over the top of his glasses. "And you want to..."

"Document everything first," I said. "I'm not moving until I have everything I need."

"That's the right call." He picked up his pen. "I'll have someone on it by this afternoon."

"Discretion," I said. "Whatever is gathered has to be clean. Real. No grey area."

"Of course." He made a note. "Yvonne." He paused. "Are you alright?"

I considered the question before answering. "I will be," I said.

He straightened his tie in our bathroom mirror at six-fifteen and met my eyes in the reflection.

"Our table at seven, yeah?"

I was sitting on the edge of the bed pulling on my earrings. Pearl studs, small, the ones he said once looked elegant on me. I had put them on without thinking about it and now I was thinking about it.

"Of course," I said.

The restaurant was warm and low-lit, the kind of place where the candles on the tables are always exactly the same height and the Waitstaff learn your name after the second visit. We had been coming here every Friday for almost two years. Same corner table. Same menu we barely needed to look at. Same conversation moving through the same comfortable channels, because that is what you do when you are building a life with someone. You build the rituals.

Mario ordered the lamb while I ordered the pasta with the lemon cream sauce. He poured the wine. He was in good spirits, relaxed because he believes everything is going according to plan.

He talked about the wedding. The seating chart. His mother's flight arriving Thursday. The Tuscany villa — he described it warmly, with detail, the hillside view, the morning light through the shutters.

The exact same details I heard Celeste describe the night before.

I smiled before I asked a question about the villa's breakfast service that I already knew the answer to, because I had booked it. I laughed when he made a joke about his best man's speech being too long. When he reached across the table and covered my hand with his, warm and certain, I turned my hand over and let my fingers close around his.

"Two more weeks," he said, looking at me with something that looked dangerously like love.

Two weeks, I thought. Just give me two weeks.

"I know," I said softly.

And I smiled at the man across the table from me like I wasn't already counting every single day.
