Chapter 3

The photographs were in a manila folder.

That detail stayed with me. Something so ordinary. A manila folder, the kind you find in any office supply drawer, sitting in the centre of Nathaniel's conference table like it wasn't carrying three months of my life inside it.

I sat down. Nathaniel sat across from me. His PI, a quiet man who introduced himself only by his last name, stood near the window and did not speak again after the introduction.

"Before we begin," Nathaniel said, "I want you to hear this clearly. Everything in that folder was obtained through lawful investigative methods. Every receipt, every photograph, every exchange. It will hold up."

I nodded once. Then I opened the folder.

Hotel receipts first. Twelve of them, spanning exactly three months. A card in Mario's name I had never seen, never known existed. The charges were not extravagant. He was careful. Mid-range hotels on the outer edges of the city, the kind of places where the staff do not remember faces. The kind chosen by someone who has thought about being forgotten.

He had thought about this. He had planned it.

I moved to the photographs. Restaurants I had never been to with him. A wine bar near Buckhead. A rooftop place in Midtown I had mentioned once, casually, that I had always wanted to try. There was Celeste in every frame, photographed from a distance, her hand on his arm, her laugh caught mid-moment. She looked happy in that easy, open way of someone who does not believe they have anything to lose.

She had no idea.

The text exchanges were last. Legally obtained from a secondary number the PI found. I did not read every word. I read enough to understand exactly what they said about me in the spaces between. Enough to confirm that the woman who sat across from Mario every Friday and held his hand was a joke he was sharing with someone else.

I closed the folder.

Nathaniel was watching me carefully. "Yvonne."

"I'm fine," I said. "What's the next step?"

Valerie arrived at my office at noon and took one look at my face and knew.

She sat down and listened without interrupting, which was something Valerie almost never did. My sister was a woman built for reaction. Big feelings, fast mouth, zero patience for people who deserved none. She sat through every word of what I told her with her hands pressed flat on her knees and when I finished, she was quiet for exactly four seconds.

"Which floor is Celeste's desk on?"

"Valerie."

"I'm just asking which floor."

"You are not walking into that building."

She shot up from the chair, arms spreading wide. "Yvonne, he has been sleeping with his assistant for three months while planning your wedding. He used your honeymoon details. He has a secret credit card. He told her she would be his wife." She pressed a hand to her chest. "What exactly are we waiting for?"

"Sit down," I said.

Something in my voice made her sit.

"If you walk into Stonebridge right now," I said slowly, "they get to be the drama. I get to be the scorned woman crying in the lobby. It becomes a story about my feelings." I leaned forward. "Is that what we want?"

Valerie's jaw was tight. "Then what do you want?"

"I want him to dump me," I said. "I want him to think he chose this. I want him to feel clever and clean and certain. And I want to be sitting in the CEO chair when he walks into that boardroom and realizes exactly what that choice cost him."

The silence that followed was the kind that means a person is recalculating everything.

Valerie stared at me for a long moment. Then, quietly, almost to herself: "You're terrifying."

She meant it as the highest compliment she knew how to give.

"Two weeks," I said. "That's all I need. Don't say a word to anyone."

She pressed her lips together and nodded. Then she reached across the desk and covered my hand with hers. She didn't say anything else but she didn't need to.

Mario was home when I got back.

That was my first sign. He was rarely home before eight. He was standing in the living room, jacket still on, hands in his pockets. Not on his phone or watching TV. Just standing there the way people stand when they have decided something and are waiting to say it.

I set my bag down. "Hey."

"Hey." He didn't move. "Can we talk?"

I sat on the couch and crossed my legs. "Of course."

He took a breath. Let it out slowly. "I've been doing a lot of thinking about us." A pause. "Things have changed for me, Yvonne. I'm not happy. I think we've grown apart and I don't think getting married is going to fix that."

I looked at him.

He was watching me carefully, waiting for the collapse. The tears. The questions. All the things a woman is supposed to do when a man unravels Two years and an engagement in three sentences while standing in his jacket in the living room.

I looked down at my hand. The ring caught the lamplight. Round solitaire. He had proposed on a Tuesday evening, nothing staged, just the two of us in this same room, and I had said yes before he finished the sentence because I had already known I would.

I slid it off.

Set it on the coffee table between us, gently, like it was not the best thing he had ever given me.

"Okay," I said.

His brow pulled together slightly, he had expected more.

"I hope you find what you're looking for, Mario." I met his eyes and held them. "I really do."

I stood up. Walked to the bedroom and closed the door behind me, softly.

Sixty seconds. Maybe less.

His voice came through the wall, low and warm and completely different from the voice he had just used with me.

"It's done. I'll be at yours in an hour."

I sat on the edge of the bed. Picked up my phone. Opened Nathaniel's thread and typed four words.

He just ended it.

I stared at the message for one breath, then added three more.

Move to phase two.

I pressed send. Set the phone down. Looked around the bedroom I had decorated, the room with the curtains I chose and the bedside lamps I ordered and the small framed print above the dresser that Mario said he loved but never once mentioned again after the first week.

Then I opened the wardrobe and began to pack.
