Chapter 3

My homeroom teacher sank to the floor like his knees had given out, clutching his thighs and slapping the cold tile in disbelief.

“This is disaster! Cole, what in God’s name were you thinking?!”

The principal’s face turned every shade of red imaginable before he pointed a finger straight at me, his voice booming. “So that’s how it is, huh? After everything this school’s done for you? Then don’t blame us!”

“Remember the fifty grand in scholarship money we agreed to release early for your dad’s medical bills?” he growled. “We were just about to wire it over after you took your exams. But, guess what? That money’s off the table.”

That hit me like a freight train.

“You can’t do that!” I shot up from my seat, no longer calm, “That money’s for my dad’s surgery. How could you go back on your word?”

The principal’s face hardened. “Don’t you dare throw that in my face, young man! You brought this on yourself. And for what it’s worth, that scholarship was for Ivy League-bound students only. Are you one of them?”

“I still can be,” I said, gritting my teeth.

“The hell you can!” he snapped. “The cops are on their way to take you in for questioning. You think any Ivy League school’s gonna touch you now?”

Anger boiled in my chest. My hands were clenched at my sides, shaking from the effort of holding myself back.

“Please, sir,” I said quietly. “I can still make it. Just give me a cha—”

He raised his hand, cutting me off mid-sentence, then turned his back on me. I locked eyes with him and in that moment, I knew—his decision was final.

And then—just as things couldn’t possibly get worse—my mom appeared at the door.

She was supposed to be at the hospital, taking care of my dad. But now, here she was, eyes wide in horror, already welling with tears as she spotted the handcuffs on my wrists.

“What’s going on?” she whispered, trembling.

I froze. “Mom? What are you doing here?”

“Your teacher called. Said you were caught cheating on your college exams. I told him he had the wrong person. I told him my son would never do such a thing.” Her voice cracked. “He said if I didn’t believe it, I should come see for myself.”

“You didn’t cheat, did you, Cole?” she asked, her eyes filled with heartbreak.

My chest caved in at the sight of her like that. I opened my mouth, but the words caught in my throat.

Then, chaos broke loose.

A group of reporters came bursting through the hallway, dragging camera crews with them. They shoved my mother aside like she wasn’t even there.

They had been stationed at the gates, covering any news on the SAT. The second they heard the top-ranked student had been caught cheating, they stormed in, they rushed in, shoving microphones in my face as camera flashes exploded around us.

“Are you Cole Grady? You’re the first student in this state’s history to get busted for cheating on the SATs! Do you realize that this scandal will stick your name for the rest of your life?”

“We heard your mock scores were always perfect. Why’d you feel the need to cheat? Care to comment?”

I stumbled back, shielding my eyes from the blinding lights, completely overwhelmed—until suddenly, Hadley jumped in front of me, with the other kids from my school pushing the reporters back and blocking their way.

“Back off! There’s nothing to report here!” Hadley spun around to face me, her expression twisted with rage. “Why’d you admit to cheating? Is this worth ruining your future, Cole?”

Before I could say a word, a police car pulled up outside. The officers stepped in, ready to haul me away.
