Chapter 4

“Cole, say it! Say you didn’t cheat!” Hadley’s face went pale. She turned to my mom and shouted. “If you don’t, you won’t get the money for your dad’s surgery tomorrow. Is that what you want?!”

“What?” my mom gasped, clutching her chest.

When she realized the principal had revoked the payment because of the accusation, she broke.  My mom’s face crumbled with panic.

“But we promised to pay for your father’s surgery tomorrow,” she cried, her voice cracking. “Please, Cole. Stop saying you cheated. Otherwise, your dad won’t—” she sobbed.

Then, she dropped on her knees. Kids should be the one kneeling to parents. Not the other way around.

“Mom, get up!” My voice cracked. I clenched my fists so hard I felt my nails cut into my palms.

“I’m not getting up until you say it,” she said, voice trembling. “You’ve always been such a good son, Cole. I don’t believe you could ever cheat. But even if you did—can’t you lie, just this once? For your father?”

And Hadley was yelling too, seizing the moment to push me even harder.

“Cole, please! Just deny it. If they take you away now, the reporters will fight for the headlines and your name will be all over the news. Your future will completely destroyed. And your whole family will carry that stain forever. They won’t survive in this city.”

My classmates started chiming in too.

“Come on, Cole—just admit it was a mistake!”

“Don’t throw your future away Cole!”

Their voices grew louder and louder, clashing into each other like a thousand drumbeats. My head felt like it was splitting open. I looked around: my mother kneeling on the floor, my homeroom teacher wiping tears, the admissions officer from Princeton watching me with silent disappointment.

My lips parted. “I…”

“I cheated. I really did.” The words clawed their way out of me, barely above a whisper—but loud enough.

The second they landed, my mom’s eyes rolled back. She collapsed in a heap.

The entire scene erupted into chaos.

Hadley rushed at me, shouting, “Do you have any idea what you just did? You’re not just throwing your own life away—you’re going to destroy your parents too!”

I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my skin, drawing blood. The pain kept me grounded, kept me from breaking.

Mr. Haskins from Princeton’s admissions office stepped forward with a heavy sigh.

“Well, in that case…” he said helplessly. “I’m sorry, Mr. Grady, but we’ll have to revoke your admission.”

In a heartbeat, I’d gone from golden boy to convicted cheat. My heart trembled violently. The storm of emotions inside me was so intense I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood.

Still, I swallowed the truth I so badly wanted to scream and nodded, “I understand. Thank you, Mr. Haskins.”

Everyone around me fell into despair.

They had all been so willing to stand by me. All I had to do was say, I didn’t cheat and they would’ve fought the disciplinary committee for me. But I didn’t. I admitted everything.

Sirens howled in the distance. The cops flanked me, hands on my shoulders, ready to lead me out like some criminal.

That’s when the head of the school board’s investigation unit burst into the room. His face was carved from stone. “Wait! Something’s off!” His voice boomed like a gunshot.

My stomach dropped.

Does he know? I thought, heart beating fast.

My homeroom teacher jumped up from his seat.

“What is it, sir? Did you find proof that Cole didn’t cheat?”

“No, it’s worst,” he said, jaw clenched tight, “He’s trying to destroy himself.”
