Chapter 7

I didn’t expect to see Dante again so soon. But there he was, standing in front of me like a shadow I couldn’t shake.

He’d given me his number days ago, and I’d been too scared to use it. But now, standing in my apartment alone, with nothing but thoughts of escape swirling around, I knew I had no choice.

I dialed the number. My hands shook, but I didn’t care.

“Laura,” he said when he picked up. “You’ve made up your mind.”

I took a deep breath. “Yes. I need your help.”

“Meet me tonight. I’ll send you the address.”

I didn’t question him. I just agreed and hung up.

Later that night, I found myself standing outside a dimly lit building. My heart was racing, but my feet moved without hesitation. Dante’s world was a dangerous one, but it felt safer than the one I was in now.

When I walked inside, Dante was waiting. He didn’t smile. He didn’t need to. There was something in his eyes that told me he understood everything without needing me to say a word.

“Sit,” he said, motioning to the chair across from him.

I did as he asked, my stomach twisting.

“I’m guessing you’re here because you’ve had enough of your husband.” His voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. He knew what he was talking about.

I nodded, unable to find my voice for a moment. But when I did speak, I didn’t hold back. “Lorenzo’s not who I thought he was. He’s not the man I married.”

Dante watched me closely. “I know. He never was.”

His words hit me harder than I expected. I thought I’d be angry. I thought I’d yell, but all I felt was exhaustion. The kind of tired you get when you’ve been carrying a weight for too long.

“I don’t want to be his wife anymore. I want to disappear. I want a life of my own.”

Dante leaned back in his chair, looking thoughtful. “You’re not the first person to say that. But it’s not so simple. You can’t just vanish. Not without help.”

I looked at him, my eyes wide. “You can help me, right?”

“I can. But I need something from you, too.”

I blinked. “What?”

He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he pulled out a file from the drawer beside him and slid it toward me. “I need you to get inside Lorenzo’s operation. I need you to tell me everything. All his deals, his contacts, his movements.”

I stared at the file, my mind spinning. “You want me to spy on him?”

Dante’s gaze was intense, unwavering. “I want you to help me take him down. But you’ll need to be careful. This isn’t just about you anymore.”

I felt a pit in my stomach. “What do you mean?”

“Lorenzo’s not just a shady businessman,” Dante said slowly. “He’s involved in things you don’t understand. Dangerous things. But if you help me, I’ll protect you.”

His words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. I wanted to say no, but something inside me told me I couldn’t. I was already in too deep.

I leaned forward, eyes focused on him. “What do I need to do?”

Dante smiled, but it wasn’t a friendly smile. It was the smile of someone who knew the weight of what he was asking.

“You’ll start by getting close to him again,” he said. “Pretend like nothing’s changed. Be the good wife, the one he thinks he can control.”

I nodded slowly. It was the only way.

“But I’ll be watching,” he added. “And when the time comes, I’ll make sure you’re safe. No matter what happens.”

I felt a flicker of hope in my chest. It wasn’t much, but it was something.

I couldn’t believe I was agreeing to this. Spying on Lorenzo. Helping Dante take him down. It felt like I was stepping into a world I couldn’t fully understand. But the alternative—living in that cage forever—wasn’t an option.

“I’ll do it,” I said, my voice steady despite the whirlwind of thoughts in my mind.

Dante’s eyes softened slightly. “Good. You’re smarter than you look.”

I almost smiled at the compliment, but I didn’t have the energy. Instead, I looked down at the file in front of me.

“You’ll have to give me everything you know. Every detail. Nothing is too small,” Dante said. “And you’ll need to stay calm. Lorenzo’s going to be watching you, too. Don’t make any sudden moves. Keep everything as normal as possible.”

I swallowed hard. “And if I fail?”

Dante didn’t flinch. “Then you don’t want to know what happens next.”

I nodded, the reality of what I was doing settling in.

As I stood up to leave, Dante’s voice stopped me.

“Laura.”

I turned back, my heart racing.

“You don’t need to be afraid of me,” he said, his tone quiet, almost reassuring. “I’m not like him.”

For a moment, I just stared at him. He was right. Dante wasn’t like Lorenzo. I didn’t know what it was exactly—maybe the way he listened, the way he treated me like I mattered—but he was different.

“Thank you,” I whispered, almost surprised by the sincerity in my voice.

Dante gave me a slight nod. “Just remember, I’m the one who keeps you safe. And you’re not alone in this anymore.”

With that, I turned and left.

I had no idea what the future held, but one thing was clear. Dante wasn’t just a fixer. He had a plan. A bigger plan. And I was going to be a part of it.
