Chapter 8

he days blurred together, each one a tightrope walk, balancing between pretending everything was fine and secretly collecting the pieces I needed. I had to move carefully, like a thief in the night, gathering everything that could save me. But I wasn’t alone in this anymore. Dante’s words echoed in my head: “I’ll protect you.” He was the only reason I had the courage to keep going.

I sat in the small office I’d set up in my apartment, files scattered across the desk. Each document, each phone call I’d secretly recorded, each picture I’d snapped—this was my escape plan. Every illegal deal, every shady business Lorenzo was involved in. It wasn’t much yet, but it was enough to start.

I glanced at the clock. It was almost time. I needed to head to the party. I had to act like nothing was wrong, like I hadn’t spent the last few days assembling the proof that could tear Lorenzo down.

It was the same event every year—a gala that people in our world used to show off power and influence. I hated it, but it was a perfect place to gather information. The rich, the corrupt, all in one room. And tonight, I had a feeling Sienna would make her move.

When I entered the venue, I could already feel the tension in the air. People glided past me in their expensive suits and glittering gowns, laughing and drinking. Lorenzo stood by the bar, his hand casually draped around Sienna’s waist. The two of them looked perfect together—perfectly fake.

I approached them, keeping my expression neutral. Sienna’s eyes flicked over to me, and I could see the challenge in them. She knew I was slipping away, and she hated it.

“Laura,” Sienna purred, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. “So nice of you to join us.”

I forced a smile. “Wouldn’t miss it.”

Sienna didn’t let me off that easy. “I heard some rumors about you. I wonder if they’re true.” Her smile turned into something sharper, her eyes narrowing with malice.

I felt my stomach churn. She was going to try something. I braced myself.

“Rumors?” I asked, playing along.

“Yes,” she continued, her voice just loud enough for a few people to overhear. “About you and someone else. An affair, perhaps?”

I froze, but only for a second. My eyes locked onto hers. She was trying to humiliate me, trying to tear me down in front of everyone. But I wouldn’t give her that satisfaction.

Before I could say anything, a voice came from behind me.

“I don’t think that’s what happened, Sienna.”

It was Dante. He’d arrived quietly, like he always did, but his presence was impossible to ignore.

Sienna looked taken aback, but she quickly recovered. “And who might you be?”

Dante didn’t smile, didn’t even flinch. “I’m someone who knows better than to spread lies about people without proof.” His voice was calm, but there was something dangerous in it.

Sienna’s face flushed with anger, but she tried to play it cool. “I’m sure you’re just a little confused, sir. Laura here has a reputation for causing drama.”

Dante raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Funny, because the only one causing drama here seems to be you, Sienna. I’m sure everyone around us would agree.”

The people nearby began to whisper, their attention shifting from me to Sienna. The power had shifted.

Sienna’s eyes flicked around the room, realizing her audience was growing. “I—I’m just saying what everyone’s been talking about. I heard—”

“I’m sure you did.” Dante cut her off, his voice now colder, sharper. “But you know, rumors are rarely true. And I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself by continuing down this path, would you?”

Sienna’s lips trembled, but she stood her ground. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I think I know exactly what I’m talking about,” Dante said smoothly. “You, on the other hand, are about to make a fool of yourself.”

Sienna’s face turned red with rage, but she didn’t say anything else. She just stormed off, her heels clicking angrily against the marble floor. The crowd slowly returned to their conversations, but the damage had been done.

Dante’s gaze turned to me, his expression softening just a bit. “You okay?”

I nodded, still feeling the adrenaline of the moment. “Thank you,” I said quietly.

He gave me a small nod. “It’s what I’m here for.”

As we stood there, a strange sense of relief washed over me. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I wasn’t completely alone. Dante had my back, and maybe—just maybe—I could make it out of this alive.

But I couldn’t stay in this world forever.

Lorenzo had started to notice the changes in me. I could feel it in the way he watched me now, in the silence that lingered whenever he spoke to me. He knew something was off, and he wasn’t stupid.

It was only a matter of time before he caught on.

Dante must’ve known that too because he leaned in closer, his voice low. “We need to speed things up.”

I nodded. “I know.”

“I’ll take care of things,” Dante said, his eyes locked on mine. “You just keep doing what you’re doing. He won’t be able to keep you under his control for much longer.”

I felt my heart race. Dante was right. Lorenzo was slipping, and the more I learned, the more I gathered, the closer I was to the endgame.

I wasn’t going to be his wife anymore. I wasn’t going to be anyone’s pawn.

I was going to be free.

But it wasn’t going to be easy.

As I walked away, I knew this was just the beginning. The pieces were in place, but there was still so much left to do. I had to stay focused. I had to be smart. And most of all, I had to be patient.

But the end was near. I could feel it in my bones.
