Chapter 19

(Ethan's pov)

People assume healing is loud.

They think it looks like speeches and headlines and big triumphant moments.

But I've come to learn it's quiet. Almost embarrassingly quiet. It's the sound of Amara's soft breathing as she naps on the couch beside me. It's the faint tapping of rain on her window. It's the quiet hum of her fridge that needs replacing. It's the way she holds her belly now, absent-mindedly, confidently-no shame, no hiding.

Six months ago, she couldn't even look at a camera without flinching.

Now? She speaks in front of halls full of scholarship applicants like she was born for it.

And I...

I've never felt more proud of anything than I do of her.

The foundation is growing faster than any company I ever built. There's something sacred about creating something that doesn't revolve around profit margins or shareholder meetings. Something that breathes.

But today, as I sit at her dining table going through proposals, my phone won't stop buzzing.

BOARD MEETING REQUEST - URGENT.

The sixth message today.

I rub my forehead.

I knew this was coming.

When you disappear from the top of an empire you built, people don't just forget you exist. They hunt for answers. Control. Stability.

Sade walks in through the door without knocking - she stopped knocking months ago.

"Sir, they're insisting," she says, dropping a stack of printed emails on the table.

I sigh. "Please don't call me sir."

She smirks. "I'll stop when you stop acting like a CEO."

Fair enough.

"What do they want this time?" I ask.

"Exactly what they've wanted the last five times - they want you back."

She lowers her voice. "This time they're offering majority reintegration. Full reinstatement. You'd get your seat, your power, your entire legacy back."

My stomach tightens.

My legacy.

It used to mean everything.

Now it feels like a past life I'm hesitant to dig up.

Before I can answer, I hear footsteps.

Amara walks in slowly, one hand on her back, her belly round and full beneath a loose dress. She's glowing - not the cliché kind, but the real, breathtaking kind that comes from surviving hell and still choosing to stand tall.

She gives us a sleepy smile.

"What's going on?"

Sade shoots me a warning look: Don't do the male thing where you keep her out of important conversations.

I clear my throat. "The board wants me back."

Amara pauses mid-step. "Back? As in... CEO again?"

I nod.

"And what do you want?" she asks softly.

I don't answer.

Because the truth is complicated.

I want power.

I want peace.

I want purpose.

I want her.

I want our child.

And I don't know if those things can coexist.

(Amara's pov)

He thinks I can't read him - but I can.

Ethan has tells.

When he's afraid, he touches the back of his neck.

When he's conflicted, he presses his thumb against his palm.

Right now, he's doing both.

He wants to say yes.

I can feel it.

His eyes have that sharp focus, the kind he used to have when he talked about ColeTech: a fire that comes only when something touches the core of who you are.

But he's also looking at me like choosing them means abandoning us.

And that scares him.

So I ask gently, "Does going back mean losing the foundation?"

"No," he says quickly. "The foundation is mine. Ours. I won't abandon it."

"Does it mean losing... me?"

At that, his entire body goes still.

Then he walks toward me slowly, stopping just inches away.

"No," he whispers. "Nothing could make me lose you."

My heart squeezes.

His words are sincere - but sincerity doesn't erase reality.

The world is still watching us.

Some haven't forgiven him.

Some never will forgive me.

And returning to ColeTech means stepping back into fire.

"Come," I say softly, reaching for his hand. I lead him to the couch and sit. "Talk to me. Tell me the truth, Ethan. Not the brave version."

He hesitates, then he lowers himself beside me with a sigh.

"I miss it," he admits in a low, raw voice. "The work. The innovation. The challenge. Building things on a scale that changes industries."

He pauses, staring at his hands.

"But I don't miss the hunger. The loneliness. The nights I slept in my office just to avoid coming home to emptiness."

He looks at me.

Really looks.

"You're not empty, Amara. You're... everything I never thought I deserved."

My throat tightens.

I touch his cheek.

"You deserve love, Ethan."

His eyes close briefly as if those words hurt and heal at the same time.

But then the doorbell rings.

Zainab bursts in dramatically, as usual.

"Good evening, family of three!" she announces, dropping a bag of suya on the table. "I brought food and gossip!"

Sade groans.

Ethan chuckles softly.

And for a few minutes, the tension dissolves.

But even while we eat, even while we laugh, I catch Ethan looking at his phone - the messages from his past calling him back.

And I realize something:

Healing isn't just soft moments and quiet peace.

Sometimes healing demands decisions.

Big ones.

And one of us will have to make one soon.

(Ethan's pov)

That night, long after everyone leaves, long after Amara drifts off to sleep beside me, I step out onto her balcony.

Lagos is glowing - loud, restless, alive.

Just like I used to be.

My phone vibrates.

From: Arthur Davis (Chairman)

"This is the final offer. The board votes Monday. We need you."

I grip the railing.

The empire I built wants me back.

But at what cost?

Behind me, I hear soft footsteps.

Amara's hand touches my back.

"You're not alone," she whispers.

And for the first time in a long time, I believe it.
