Chapter 20

(Amara's pov)

Morning comes too quickly.

I wake to sunlight creeping through the curtains, warm against my face. My lower back aches - pregnancy has turned my body into a full-time job - but when I roll over, I see Ethan standing by the window, already dressed, staring at his phone.

He hasn't slept.

I know it instantly.

His shoulders are rigid.

His breathing is too shallow.

And his suit jacket is hanging neatly over the chair - meaning he put it there around 5 a.m., when he decided sleep wasn't worth the fight.

"Did they message again?" I ask softly.

He startles slightly, then turns.

"You're awake."

"I've been awake," I say, pushing myself upright. "You kept sighing like a stressed generator."

That earns a tiny smile from him, but only for a second.

He sits on the edge of the bed, elbows on his knees.

"They need my answer today."

There it is - the sentence that steals the oxygen from the room.

I swallow. "And what do you want to say?"

His jaw flexes.

He looks torn - like someone pulled him in two directions overnight.

"I want to say no," he says finally.

"But I also want to say yes."

He drops his face into his palms.

"This was my life, Amara. My identity. My name. And losing it... that hurt more than the scandal."

My heart clenches. I know what it feels like to lose your identity, to have the world rename you in headlines you never asked for.

I move closer, placing my hand on his back.

"Ethan... choosing them again doesn't mean choosing against us."

He lifts his head, looking at me with an emotion I can't immediately name - fear? longing? hope?

"What if it does?" he whispers.

"What if I'm not built for balance? What if I fail again - not as a CEO, but as a father?"

The vulnerability in his words pulls something deep inside me.

"You will fail," I say gently.

His eyes widen.

"You're human. You'll make mistakes. You'll mess up. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try."

I rest his hand on my belly.

"This child doesn't need a perfect father. They just need one who shows up."

He lets out a shaky breath.

"I want to show up," he murmurs.

"For both of you."

I smile. "Then start there. The company can wait."

He kisses my knuckles softly, like he's holding onto me for stability.

And maybe he is.

(Ethan's pov)

Her words follow me through the morning.

This child just needs you to show up.

I think about my own father - the man who taught me power matters more than people, reputation more than honesty. Growing up, I didn't have a father. I had a commander.

I don't want that for my child.

By noon, I'm at the foundation office, reviewing our upcoming financial literacy workshops. Sade paces behind me, sighing dramatically like I'm a husband she's fed up with.

"Are you going to tell me your decision or should I call your village people to reveal it in a dream?"

I rub my temples. "I don't know."

"You do know," she says sharply. "You're just afraid to speak it."

I look up at her in surprise.

Sade rarely gets emotional.

She crosses her arms.

"Sir-Ethan," she corrects. "You built ColeTech. But you bled for the foundation. Blood is louder than legacy."

I stare at her. "You sound like you want me to choose against the company you worked for."

"Maybe I do," she snaps. "Because that company almost destroyed you. This place healed you."

Her voice breaks slightly.

"And Amara-she brought you back to life in ways the company never could."

I sit quietly, absorbing her words.

Then the office door swings open.

It's Zainab.

Carrying bubble tea.

Because of course she is.

"Hello!" she says brightly. "I'm here to check on the father of my godchild. Also to distract him from making stupid decisions."

I blink. "Do you all coordinate these interventions?"

"Yes," they say in unison.

Good Lord.

Zainab walks straight up to me and hands me her drink.

"Hold this."

I do.

She pokes my forehead.

"You love Amara?"

"Yes," I say without thinking.

"Good," she replies. "Then don't go back to the exact life that almost broke her."

I open my mouth - but she lifts a finger.

"Let me finish. Some men chase power because they think it will make them whole. You? You already found what makes you whole. Don't lose it."

I stare at her, stunned.

Zainab, noticing my shock, shrugs.

"What? I can be deep sometimes. Don't play with me."

Sade cackles.

Zainab sits on the desk and swings her legs casually.

"Now listen. If you go back to being CEO, you'll give them permission to drag Amara again. And the next time, she won't hide behind tears. She'll hide behind pride. And pride kills relationships faster than lies."

My chest tightens.

I didn't think of that.

"Talk to her again," Zainab says softly. "But make the decision from your truth... not your fear."

I nod slowly.

And I know exactly what I need to do.

(Amara's pov)

He comes home early that afternoon.

I'm folding baby clothes I bought from Yaba market - tiny socks, soft onesies - things that make the future feel close enough to touch.

When he enters, he looks calm. Too calm.

I straighten. "Ethan?"

He walks to me, takes both of my hands, and holds them gently.

"I've made my decision."

My heart thuds hard.

"And?"

He smiles - a quiet, peaceful smile I've never seen on him before.

"I'm choosing us."

My breath catches.

"Ethan-"

"No, listen." He cups my cheek with one hand. "If I go back, I'll be swallowed whole again. And I can't be half a man for you. Or half a father for our child. I want to build something that lets me live... not just lead."

I feel tears gathering.

"So you're not going back?" my voice trembles.

"No," he says softly. "I'm choosing a life I don't need to run away from. And choosing you?"

His forehead rests against mine.

"That's the easiest decision I've ever made."

My tears fall then - warm, unstoppable.

His thumbs wipe them away as he whispers,

"We'll build something better. Something ours."

I throw my arms around him, holding him tight.

And for the first time in months, I feel the final piece of fear dissolve inside me.

We're not healing apart anymore.

We're healing together.
