My Husband Died at His Mistress's Bachelorette Party, So I Married Her Billionaire Groom Chapter 1

At 2:13 a.m., I was standing barefoot on the kitchen tiles, pressing a name sticker onto my daughter's pink lunchbox.

*LUCY WARD.* Purple letters, a little unicorn in the corner. She'd picked them out herself.

My phone buzzed against the counter. Unknown number. Florida area code.

"Is this Emily Ward?" a man asked.

"Yes. Who is this?"

"Detective Ruiz, Miami Beach Police Department. Ma'am, are you the wife of Daniel James Ward?"

The cold from the floor crept up my ankles. "I am."

He read out Daniel's date of birth, then the name of a hotel on Collins Avenue. He spoke carefully, like a man who had made this call before and hated it every time.

"Ma'am, your husband died in Miami tonight."

I didn't say anything. I looked at the lunchbox, then at my phone, where Daniel's last text still sat above the call screen.

*Long day in Chicago. Miss you both. Goodnight, Em.*

Sent at 10:47 p.m.

Six years ago, the night before the first Ward Fitness opened, he had stood behind me at this same table and fastened my mother's sapphire locket around my neck. His hands had been shaking. *I'll never make you choose between loving me and respecting yourself,* he'd said. *I promise.*

"Mrs. Ward? Are you still with me?"

"I'm here." I opened the fridge and set the lunchbox on the middle shelf, next to the yogurt cups. Then I closed the door. "Detective, would you mind if I recorded this call? I don't think I'm going to remember it properly."

A pause. "That's fine, ma'am."

I tapped record. I pulled the grocery notepad toward me and uncapped a pen. "What's the case number?"

He gave it to me. I wrote it down, every digit, and underlined it twice.

"What happened?"

"It appears to have been a fall. From the rooftop pool deck. It's private, reserved for an event. We're still putting together the timeline."

"Say the hotel again."

He said it again.

"Daniel Ward. Thirty-eight. Brown hair, scar through his left eyebrow." My voice sounded flat and far away. "You're sure it's not someone with the same name?"

"His driver's license and phone were on him. And there's the scar." He cleared his throat. "Mrs. Ward, I have to ask. Did you know your husband was in Miami?"

"He told me he was at a business conference in Chicago."

The silence on the line stretched long enough that I knew what was coming before he said it.

"The rooftop was booked for a bachelorette party. A Ms. Sophia Hart. Your husband wasn't on the guest list." He paused. "He wasn't there for business, Mrs. Ward."

I put him on speaker and opened Instagram with fingers that had gone stiff.

Sophia Hart. I knew the name. She'd taken spin classes at our downtown location two years ago, then stopped coming. Daniel had said she moved.

Her party had its own hashtag. It wasn't hard to find. Pink balloons, a neon sign that said *LAST FLING BEFORE THE RING*, women in white dresses screaming at the camera.

And in the background of one video, a man with his hand on Sophia's waist.

I paused it. Zoomed in.

White linen shirt. Sleeves rolled to the elbow. I knew that shirt. I had ironed it last Tuesday while he sat at the island answering emails, and I'd teased him that nobody wears linen in Chicago in October.

He'd laughed. He'd kissed my cheek and taken the shirt off the hanger himself.

"Ma'am?"

"I'm looking at a video of him," I said. "From the party."

"We're collecting those as well."

The excuses lined up one by one in the blue light of the screen. The phone he'd started leaving face-down on the nightstand. The Chicago itinerary he'd closed on his laptop when I walked up behind him. *It's boring, Em, just hotel stuff.* The jewelry charge on our Amex last month, forty-two hundred dollars. *Client gift. Tax write-off.*

Every one of them clicked into place, and every one of them had been sitting in front of me.

"Someone will contact you about the next steps," Detective Ruiz said gently. "I'm very sorry for your loss."

"Thank you for calling me yourself."

When the line went quiet, I stopped the recording and saved it. Then I went back to the video and took screenshots, frame by frame, until I found one where Sophia had turned toward the camera flash.

Something blue glittered at her throat.

I spread my fingers on the screen and pulled the image closer. It went grainy, but not grainy enough.

An oval sapphire in an old gold setting. Too far away to read the engraving on the back, *For my Emmy, always*, but close enough to see the clasp. The left side had a tiny notch bitten out of it, where I'd snapped it trying to put it on by myself when I was ten. My mother hadn't been angry. She'd said the locket finally had a story.

Two months ago, Daniel had told me the safe in our closet was acting up. He'd offered to keep the locket in his office until the repair guy came.

He'd kissed my forehead when I handed it to him.

I sat down at the kitchen table. I stared at that broken clasp until my fingers stopped feeling cold, until I stopped feeling much of anything.

I didn't throw my phone. I didn't look up Sophia's number. I created a new folder, locked it with a password Daniel had never known, and moved everything inside. The screenshots. The video link. The hashtag. The time stamps. The recording. A photo of the case number in my own handwriting.

Down the hall, a small voice called out, thick with sleep.

"Daddy?"

I went to her. Lucy's night-light threw soft stars across the ceiling, and she had kicked her blanket into a knot at her feet. Her eyes were barely open.

"Is Daddy home?"

I pulled the blanket up to her chin and tucked it under her shoulders, the way she liked it.

"Not yet, bug," I whispered. "I'll handle this. You just sleep."

She was out again before I reached the door.

Back in the kitchen, I dug through my wallet until I found a cream-colored business card. *Naomi Kessler, Attorney at Law.* She'd drafted my personal trust before I married Daniel. She was also the only person I knew who answered her phone at two in the morning.

"Emily." Naomi sounded instantly awake. "What's wrong?"

"Daniel's dead. He fell from a hotel roof in Miami." I kept my voice level. "I need you to start the death certificate process. I need an emergency evidence preservation letter sent to the hotel and the Miami police. And I need the originals of my trust documents. Not copies."

There was a short silence. "Okay. Okay. Are you safe? Is Lucy okay?"

"Lucy's asleep. I'm fine."

"Em, you're not fine."

"Not right now, I'm not." I looked at the locked folder. "Also, no statements. Not to anyone. If the press calls, they call you."

"Understood. I'll be at your place by eight."

The second I hung up, the phone lit again. *Margaret Ward.* Daniel's mother.

I answered. "Margaret."

"Emily." Her voice was tight, clipped, already composed. "The police called me. Listen to me carefully. Whatever happens, you cannot let this affect the company's valuation. The board will be watching. Do you understand?"

I looked through the doorway at the star-speckled ceiling of my daughter's room.

"Your son is dead, Margaret."

"I'm aware of that. Which is exactly why we have to be careful. I'll send someone over in the morning to talk with you and Lucy about what to say."

"No, you won't." I said it politely, the way you'd turn down a second helping. "Speak to my attorney. And don't contact my daughter."

I ended the call before she could answer.

My phone buzzed almost immediately. Not Margaret. A news alert.

**3 DAYS TO GO: Real Estate Mogul Alexander Sterling to Wed Sophia Hart in Society Wedding of the Year**

The photo showed them on a yacht. He was tall, unsmiling, his hand at the small of her back. She was laughing into the wind.

And around her neck, glinting in the sun, was my mother's locket.

I was still looking at it when a text arrived from a number I didn't know.

*Don't ruin my wedding.*
