Chapter 2

I never got the chance to ask about the bracelet.

"Ms. Carver?" Allen's assistant, Dana, hovered at the edge of the legal floor, clutching a tablet to her chest. "The board meeting. Mr. Carver moved it up. They're waiting for you."

"Moved it up to when?"

Dana swallowed. "Now."

Behind me, Zoe's keyboard started clicking again. Light. Cheerful. Like music.

The boardroom on the thirty-eighth floor was full. Eight executives around the long walnut table. Allen stood at the head in the gray suit I'd picked out for his first investor pitch. He didn't look at me when I walked in.

Zoe came in thirty seconds later and took the chair at his right hand.

My chair.

"Let's get started," Allen said. "Thanks to everyone for coming on short notice. I'll keep this brief. Effective Monday, we're restructuring the legal department."

Gerald Moss, our CFO, lifted his eyebrows at me across the table. I gave him nothing.

"Zoe Pruitt will step in as General Counsel," Allen went on. "Ella will move into a new role. Head of Strategic Compliance. It's a big-picture position. Long-term planning."

Nobody breathed.

Strategic Compliance. A title with no team, no budget, and no signing authority. I'd drafted enough org charts to know a closet when I saw one.

I set my pen down on the table.

"May I ask a few questions?"

Allen's jaw shifted. "Ella, this isn't really a discussion—"

"It's a board meeting. Questions are the point." I turned to Zoe. She was smiling politely, hands folded, the diamonds resting on her knuckles. "Zoe, how long have you held your license?"

Her smile thinned. "Eight months."

"Eight months. And how many major litigations have you handled independently?"

"I've assisted on—"

"Independently."

Silence.

"None," I said for her. "Next. The Halvorsen supply contract last month. Who submitted the final review?"

"I did," Zoe said.

"You submitted it. At eleven forty that night. I know because I stayed until two rewriting the indemnity clause you missed. The one that would've left us exposed to about nine million dollars in liability." I glanced down the table. "Gerald, you remember that number."

Gerald coughed into his fist. He remembered.

"So walk me through it, Allen." I finally turned to face him. "What exactly qualifies her to run the legal department of a company I spent a decade protecting?"

For a second, I thought he might back down. He'd always backed down in rooms like this. He'd always looked to me.

Instead, he laughed. Short and sharp.

"Talent isn't measured in years, Ella."

"No. It's measured in results."

"You want to talk about results?" He planted both hands on the table and leaned in. "Here's one. Everyone in this building is afraid of you. You know that? Your biggest flaw is that you're too controlling. You honestly believe this company would collapse without you."

The words landed like a slap. Somebody at the far end of the table stared hard at a water glass.

"It almost did," I said quietly. "Twice. Or have you forgotten who closed the deal on Tuesday?"

Beside him, Zoe made a small sound. A wet little sniff.

Her eyes had gone pink around the rims. She pressed a knuckle to her lower lip, like she was trying so hard to be brave.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I know I'm not Ella. I never said I was. I just wanted a chance to prove—" Her voice broke, right on cue.

Allen's hand came down on her shoulder.

In front of everyone.

"Enough." His eyes were cold when they met mine. "Don't bring your personal feelings into this office, Ella. It's unprofessional."

My personal feelings.

I looked at his hand on her shoulder. At the diamonds on her wrist. At the eight faces pretending not to see either.

Then I stood, buttoned my blazer, and picked up my pen.

"Noted," I said. "For the minutes."

I walked out before anyone could watch my hands shake.

I didn't go to the bathroom. I didn't go to the elevator. I went straight back to my office, because that was the one place in the building that was still mine.

Except it wasn't.

The brass nameplate beside the door said ZOE PRUITT, GENERAL COUNSEL. The letters were so new they still had a thin film of plastic over the edges.

Inside, my assistant Nadia was on her knees by the filing cabinet, loading a banker's box.

"Nadia."

She jerked so hard she dropped a folder. Papers slid across the carpet. The Brennan arbitration. My first win for this company, back when our office was a rented desk above a dry cleaner.

"Ms. Carver. I'm so sorry." Her face went red. "Facilities sent the order this morning. They said everything goes to storage. B-level."

"Everything."

"Ten years of case files." She gathered the papers with trembling fingers. "I asked who signed off. They said Mr. Carver."

The basement. Next to the broken chairs and the holiday decorations.

I crouched and picked up one page. My own handwriting in the margins, blue ink, underlined twice. *Don't settle. We win this.*

Allen had been sitting beside me when I wrote that. He'd kissed my temple and said, *What would I do without you?*

Now I knew.

He hadn't made a mistake at the Harrow. A mistake happens once. This was a plan. The nameplate had been ordered. The files had been scheduled. The meeting had been moved so I'd walk in unprepared. He wasn't cheating on me.

He was erasing me.

"Box it all," I told Nadia. "But make me a copy of the index first. Every file. Every date."

She blinked up at me. "Why?"

"Because someday somebody's going to ask who built this place."

Allen came home at nine.

I was at the kitchen island with a glass of wine I hadn't touched. He dropped his keys in the bowl, loosened his tie, and walked straight over to wrap his arms around me from behind, like the entire day had never happened.

"Long day," he murmured into my neck.

I stayed very still. "Was it?"

"Don't be like that. It's business, Ella. It's not personal." He rocked me gently side to side. "Honestly, this is a good thing. You've been running yourself into the ground for years. Less stress. More time."

"More time for what?"

He turned me around on the stool. His thumbs brushed my cheekbones. His eyes were soft and hopeful and completely foreign.

"Once Zoe finds her footing," he said, "let's have a baby. Okay? We always said we would."

A baby.

I actually smiled. I couldn't help it. The whole thing was so absurd, it bubbled up out of me like a hiccup.

"You think that's funny?" He frowned.

"I think you have incredible timing."

I pressed my palms flat against his chest to push him away.

That was when his phone lit up on the counter beside my wine glass.

The screen was facing me. The preview was already open.

A photo. A white plastic stick on a pink bathroom sink.

Two lines.

And under it, a message from Zoe:

**Two lines. What should I tell your wife?**
