Chapter 3

Zoe sent the invitation at 8:02 the next morning.

**Rooftop terrace. 10 a.m. Just us girls.**

I went. Not because she asked. Because I wanted to hear her say it out loud.

She was already waiting by the glass railing, the wind tugging at her blouse. She'd worn flats. Sensible, careful flats. She wanted me to notice.

"Thanks for coming," she said. "I thought we should talk like adults."

"Then talk."

She smiled and laid one hand on her stomach. It was perfectly flat under the silk. She stroked it anyway, slow little circles, like there was already something there to soothe.

"I'm pregnant, Ella."

"I know. I saw the photo."

Her fingers paused. Just for a second. Then the circles started again.

"Allen can't bring himself to hurt you," she said softly. "He's too kind. So I have to be the one to tell you." She leaned in. "The person who needs to step aside is you."

I waited for the tears to come. They didn't.

What came instead was that cool, familiar focus. The feeling I got at two in the morning with a bad contract under my pen.

"How many weeks?"

Zoe blinked. "What?"

"How far along are you? It's a simple question."

"About six. Maybe seven."

"About. Maybe." I tilted my head. "Have you seen a doctor, or just a drugstore test?"

"I—I have an appointment."

"When?"

"Next week."

"So no confirmed date. No ultrasound. No medical record." I ticked each one off on my fingers. "Six or seven weeks puts conception somewhere in early October. Allen was in Singapore for nine days in early October. Did you fly out?"

Her face drained, pink to paper white.

"Last question," I said. "Did Allen know before or after he moved the board meeting?"

"You're insane." Her voice climbed. "You're treating my baby like a deposition!"

"You're the one who brought me evidence, Zoe. I'm just reviewing it."

The terrace door banged open behind me.

"Ella."

Allen. Out of breath, tie crooked. Someone had called him. Probably her.

He crossed the terrace in six long strides. He didn't come to me. He stepped between us and put Zoe behind his back, one arm out, like I was a dog that might bite.

"What are you doing?" he snapped.

"Asking questions."

"She's pregnant." His voice was low and hard. "Don't upset a pregnant woman. What's wrong with you?"

I stared at that arm. At the way his body had moved before his brain did. No thinking. No hesitation. Pure instinct.

Five years ago, a cab ran a red light in Midtown, and Allen had yanked me back onto the curb the exact same way.

Something inside me went quiet. Not broken. Just finished.

"You're not denying it," I said.

His mouth opened. Closed. Behind him, Zoe pressed her cheek against his shoulder blade.

And I laughed. A real laugh, bright and ugly, the kind that makes people step back.

"Eight years," I said. "Eight years together. Five years married. And I'm worth less than a few weeks of cells in her stomach."

"Ella, that's not—"

"Don't. You'll only embarrass yourself."

I walked to the door. He didn't follow. He was too busy asking Zoe if she felt dizzy.

I called Marcus from the stairwell.

"I need a divorce agreement," I told him. "Tonight."

A long pause. "Are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure of anything."

He brought the papers to the house at seven. Allen came home at eight and found them waiting on the dining table, flagged in yellow at every signature line.

He read the first page. Then the second. Then he flipped back to the first, like the words might have changed.

"You're not asking for the house."

"No."

"Or your shares?"

"Keep them."

He stared at me. "That's millions, Ella. Half of it is legally yours."

"I know exactly what it is. I drafted the equity structure." I clicked my pen. "I'm taking my premarital savings, my car, and my professional files. The originals. Nadia is sending them from B-level tomorrow. Everything else is yours."

"This is a tantrum." He pushed the papers toward me. "You're angry. Fine. Sleep on it."

I signed the first page. Then the next. Then the last.

Ella Carver. Ella Carver. Ella Carver.

Maybe for the last time.

My two suitcases were already packed by the front door. He noticed them for the first time, and something flickered across his face. Not grief. Irritation.

"Seriously?" He folded his arms. "Let's be honest. Where are you going to go? You've given your whole life to me and that company. Without us, you're nobody."

I pulled up the handle on the first suitcase.

"Somewhere," I said, "I don't have to breathe the same air as you."

The door shut behind me. I didn't hear him open it again.

I bought a ticket to anywhere with a flight before midnight. Lisbon. Delayed three hours.

So I sat at the airport bar with a whiskey and no plan, watching planes blink across the black glass.

Then the shouting started.

"Tomas! Tomas, did you take the money?"

"Is it true you threw the semifinal?"

"What about the assault charge? Did you break his jaw?"

A wall of cameras shoved its way into the bar. At the center stood a young man in a black hoodie, hood up, sunglasses on at eleven at night. Tall. Broad through the shoulders. The kind of face that belonged on stadium billboards.

It was on stadium billboards. I'd walked past one at the gate.

Tomas Reyes. Twenty-six. Striker. Half the country's favorite player until last week.

"No comment," he said flatly. "Move."

Airport security finally waded in and pushed the reporters back. A flash went off in my eyes. Then the crowd thinned, and Tomas dropped onto the stool beside me like he owned it.

He took off the sunglasses. His eyes were dark, bloodshot, and very awake.

"You're Ella Carver."

I didn't move. "Have we met?"

"No. But I read the Brennan arbitration. Everybody said you'd lose." He signaled the bartender for water. "You didn't."

"That was eight years ago."

"Still good work."

He reached into his hoodie and pulled out a folded envelope. The paper was creased and soft, like he'd been holding it for days. He smoothed it flat on the bar and slid it toward me.

A lawyer's letter. The letterhead belonged to the league. The first paragraph used the words *fraud*, *assault*, and *lifetime ban*.

"Six firms turned me down," he said. "Two of them didn't even return my calls."

"Why are you telling me this?"

He smiled. It wasn't a charming smile. It was sharp, a little reckless, and aimed right at me.

"I heard you just lost your job."

My hand tightened around the glass.

"So," Tomas said, tapping the letter once. "Are you brave enough to take the case every other lawyer is too scared to touch?"
