Chapter 2

I sat in my parked car outside our building, watching the comments multiply beneath Claire’s photo.

*Congratulations, Adrian! You two look stunning.*

*Finally official! Wishing the new Mrs. Blackwood all the happiness in the world.*

The second comment came from the chief operating officer of Blackwood Technologies, a man who had attended our private engagement party six months ago. Two other executives had liked it. None of them questioned the absence of my face. In their eyes, Adrian was an untouchable founder, and whoever he stood beside was the woman who belonged there.

I closed the app, put the car in park, and took the private elevator up to the top floor.

We had purchased the penthouse three months after Adrian closed his Series B funding. I had covered nearly seventy percent of the down payment using the inheritance from my grandmother’s estate. For eight months, I oversaw every contractor, selected the brushed gold light fixtures in the living room, ordered the floor-to-ceiling glass for the corner study, and kept fresh white roses in the dining area. Every corner of the apartment had been designed around the life we were supposed to build together.

When the elevator doors opened into the foyer, the first thing that hit me was the scent of tarragon and heavy cream.

Adrian was standing in the open-concept kitchen, his sleeves rolled to his elbows, stirring a pot of seafood chowder. On the living room sofa sat Claire. She was curled under my cashmere throw, wearing my slate-grey silk slippers, sipping Earl Grey from my favorite porcelain mug. Her leather suitcase stood beside the coat rack.

Adrian looked up, a wooden tasting spoon in his hand. He didn't flinch.

"Why are you home so early?" he asked.

"I didn't realize I needed permission to enter my own home," I said, setting my keys on the console table.

Claire immediately set her cup down, the porcelain clattering against the glass table. Her eyes grew red, shining with immediate distress.

"Evelyn, please don't be angry," Claire said, standing up on unsteady feet. "My father was transferred to Mount Sinai this afternoon, just four blocks away. I was dizzy from spending the whole day in the ward, and Adrian didn't want me staying alone in an empty apartment. It's just for tonight."

She spoke with polite hesitation, but as I glanced down the short hallway, the door to the guest room stood wide open. My guest room—the space I had spent weeks clearing out to turn into my private reading study—was already filled. Her designer cosmetics covered the vanity, her coats hung in the wardrobe, and stacks of medical charts were piled on the desk.

"You need to pack your things and leave," I said plainly.

Adrian set the spoon down with a sharp click against the granite counter. "Her father is dying, Evelyn. Can't you show a little compassion?"

"She can stay at the Carlyle," I replied, meeting his gaze. "You have corporate accounts with three luxury hotels within walking distance."

"I'll go," Claire whispered. She reached for her designer purse, her lower lip trembling. "I'm so sorry, Evelyn. I never wanted to come between you two. I can find a hotel."

She took two steps toward the hallway, then suddenly swayed, pressing the back of her hand to her forehead.

Adrian dropped his kitchen towel and crossed the living room in three strides. He caught her by the waist before she touched the floor, supporting her entire weight against his chest.

"Claire, stop," he said, his voice laced with concern. "Sit down. You haven't eaten all day. You're in no condition to go anywhere."

He eased her back onto the sofa, crouching beside her to check her pulse.

Watching him support her so tenderly made something inside my chest go completely numb. Three months ago, I had collapsed on our bathroom floor with a fever of a hundred and two degrees, shivering so hard I couldn't reach the phone. When I finally called him, Adrian told me his pre-IPO investor dinner was non-negotiable. He told me to call an Uber to the emergency room, promising he would join me later.

He never showed up. He sent a flower delivery to my hospital room the following morning.

"Dinner's ready," Adrian said after a long silence, standing up and brushing off his slacks. "Come to the table."

I walked into the dining room.

On the polished mahogany table, Adrian had neatly arranged two ceramic bowls, two sets of silver spoons, and two linen napkins. There was no third setting. He hadn't even factored me in.

Adrian froze when he noticed where I was looking. A brief flicker of embarrassment crossed his face, but he quickly masked it, clearing his throat as he turned toward the kitchen.

"I didn't know what time your school day finished," he muttered, grabbing an unmatched bowl from the cupboard. "Sit down, Claire."

Claire hovered near the dining room entrance. "Maybe I should eat in the guest room. I don't want to make Evelyn uncomfortable."

Adrian pulled out a chair for her, his grip firm on the wood. "Sit. Your blood sugar is dangerously low. You aren't hiding in a bedroom."

Before Claire could lift her spoon, her phone rang against the tabletop. She looked at the caller ID, her expression changing immediately.

"It's the hospital," she said, tapping the screen and switching on the video feed. "Dad?"

On the screen, an elderly man lay surrounded by monitors, an oxygen cannula resting under his nose. His skin was pale and waxy, but his eyes lit up the moment he saw Claire.

"Claire-bear," Richard rasped, his voice trembling through the speaker. "Is... is my son-in-law there?"

"Right here, Richard," Adrian said, stepping behind Claire's chair and leaning down into the camera's frame.

"Good... good boy," the old man breathed, a faint smile touching his dry lips. "I feel at peace knowing you two belong to each other. Claire, my girl... let me see the rings. Show your old father the rings."

Claire lifted Adrian’s left hand, showing off the polished platinum band they had picked up at City Hall. Then she lifted her own right hand, hesitating.

Her ring finger was completely bare.

"Dad, look," Claire said softly, angling the camera. "We're wearing our wedding rings."

Richard squinted at the screen, his breathing turning labored. "Claire? Where is yours? Why don't I see your stone? Did he not buy you one?"

"He did, Dad, it's just..." Claire stammered, looking up at Adrian with wide, pleading eyes. "It was being sized, remember?"

"No... no, Adrian promised me," Richard wheezed, his heart monitor beeping in a faster rhythm. "A proper ring... on her finger..."

Adrian straightened up, his eyes immediately darting toward the closed door of the master bedroom.

I knew that look. I knew exactly what was inside the velvet box sitting on our dresser. It was the three-carat cushion-cut diamond band we had designed together in Paris. The inside was engraved with our names: *E & A, Forever.*

"Don't," I said. My voice was quiet, but it was sharp enough to slice through the room.

Adrian didn't even look at me. He walked past my chair, pushed open the bedroom door, and returned five seconds later holding the black velvet box.

He popped the clasp, pulled out the diamond ring, and reached for Claire's left hand.

I sat frozen in my seat as Adrian slipped my ring onto Claire’s finger.

The band was too loose on her slender hand, sliding crookedly against her knuckle. Claire quickly pressed her thumb against it to hold it steady, then raised her hand to the camera, tears spilling down her cheeks into a radiant smile.

"Look, Dad," Claire choked out. "It's right here. It's beautiful."

On the screen, Richard took a long, rattling breath, his chest rising and falling slowly. "Good. My sweet girl is taken care of. I can rest now."

The call ended with a soft chime.

Silence filled the dining room, heavy and suffocating.

I pushed my chair back and stood up. I walked over to the side of the table where Claire was sitting, stopped right in front of her, and held out an open palm.

"Take it off," I said.

Claire pulled her hand back against her chest, her chin quivering. "Evelyn, I'm so sorry. It was just for the video. I swear, I was only trying to calm my father down."

Adrian stepped directly between us, blocking Claire from my view. His jaw was set, his brow furrowed with open annoyance.

"It's a piece of jewelry, Evelyn," he snapped. "Her father was on the verge of a cardiac spike. Can you stop making every single thing about yourself?"

"No, Adrian," I replied, staring directly into his eyes. "You made my wedding about her. You made my home about her. And now you just put my ring on her finger."

Adrian sighed, his expression softening into that practiced, patronizing warmth he used whenever he wanted me to concede. He stepped forward, reaching out to pull me into a hug. "Evie, listen to me. He’s an old man with days left. I owe him my entire career. It doesn't mean anything."

I stepped back, letting his hands fall into empty air.

Before he could speak again, his phone began to vibrate on the table. The screen displayed his mother's name: *Margaret.*

Adrian answered and put it on speaker as he reached for a glass of water. "Hey, Mom."

"Adrian, darling," Margaret's crisp, demanding voice echoed through the dining room. "The caterers for the Long Island estate just called my office. The final balance is due tomorrow, and we need the updated seating chart by noon. Have you and Evelyn finalized the guest count for her side of the family?"

Adrian paused. He glanced at Claire, who was sitting quietly with her hands folded, and then looked at me.

"Evelyn's having second thoughts, Mom," Adrian said smoothly into the phone. "We may need to postpone the reception."

There was an immediate scoff on the other end of the line.

"Second thoughts? Now?" Margaret’s voice rose in sharp irritation. "The invitations have been out for weeks! Everyone from the country club is attending. What on earth is wrong with that girl? She knows how much pressure you're under with the quarterly earnings, and she chooses now to throw a childish tantrum? She is completely selfish."

I stood there, waiting.

I waited for Adrian to say, *Mom, that's not true.*

I waited for him to admit that he had married another woman that morning. I waited for him to show even a shred of decency and take responsibility for the mess he had created.

Adrian stayed silent. He took a sip of his water, allowing his mother's insults to hang in the air between us like undisputed facts.

"I'll handle it, Mom," Adrian finally said. "I'll call you tomorrow."

He hung up.

Claire looked up, her expression filled with fragile concern. "Adrian, that isn't fair to Evelyn. I should call your mother and explain about my father. I can tell her the truth."

Adrian reached out, resting a gentle hand on Claire's shoulder to stop her. "You've done enough today, Claire. You need to rest. Let me handle Evelyn."

That was the moment the last trace of warmth in me died.

He didn't think I was unreasonable. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was simply comfortable letting me take the blame, because preserving his image mattered more than my dignity ever would.

I turned around without saying another word, walked into the master bedroom, and pulled my hard-shell suitcase down from the top shelf of the closet.

I opened the drawers, throwing my sweaters, jeans, and work blouses into the open case.

Footsteps followed me into the room. Adrian walked in, closing the door behind him. He stood with his arms crossed, watching me fold a jacket.

"You can't seriously throw away seven years over this," he said, his voice dropping into a low, irritated murmur. "We've been through worse than a postponed wedding, Evie. Stop being dramatic."

I reached down, pulled the zipper around the edge of the suitcase, and locked it into place with a sharp snap.

I looked up at him, my face entirely calm. "I didn't throw them away, Adrian. You threw them away this morning when you married someone else."

I took the handle of the suitcase and stepped toward the bedroom door.

Adrian reached out to grab my arm, but before his fingers could touch my sleeve, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the living room, followed by the shattering of glass.

Adrian turned instantly, wrenching the bedroom door open.

Claire was lying motionless on the hardwood floor beside the dining table. The porcelain mug lay broken beside her, tea pooling across the floorboards.

"Claire!" Adrian yelled.

He rushed across the room, falling to his knees. He scooped her limp body into his arms, lifting her against his chest as he scrambled toward the foyer. As he hit the button for the private elevator, he turned his head and glared at me, his eyes blazing with fury.

"If something happens to her, can you live with that?" he shouted.

The elevator doors slid open with a chime.

I stood in the hallway with my suitcase in hand, watching him carry another woman into the elevator, and said nothing at all.
