Betrayed by My Fiancé, I Reclaimed My Empire Chapter 1

The morning air in lower Manhattan had a sharp autumn bite, so I pulled the collar of my cream cashmere coat closer to my throat as I pushed through the heavy doors of the City Clerk’s office. In my right hand, I carried a pale gold box tied with a silk ribbon. Inside were three dozen custom artisanal chocolates, each one stamped in edible gold leaf with the initials *E & A*.

Evelyn Bennett and Adrian Blackwood.

Today was supposed to be our quiet civil ceremony after seven years together. In three weeks, three hundred guests would gather at an estate on Long Island for the grand reception, the five-tier cake, and the string quartet. Today was just for us—or at least, that was what Adrian had promised when he kissed my forehead over coffee yesterday morning.

I had arrived thirty minutes early, hoping to hand the chocolates out to the clerks at the front desk before Adrian got out of his morning meeting.

The hallway outside the marriage bureau was quiet, the marble floors gleaming under the warm ceiling lights. As I approached the corner near the chapel doors, two familiar voices drifted down the corridor.

I stopped. One of them belonged to Daniel, Adrian’s best friend and chief legal counsel. The other belonged to the man I was about to marry.

"Are you out of your mind?" Daniel’s voice was low, tight, and edged with disbelief. "You're marrying Claire? What about Evelyn?"

My fingers tightened on the ribbon of the chocolate box. I stayed just behind the marble pillar at the corner.

Looking through the gap in the frosted glass partition, I could see Adrian standing near the chapel entrance. He looked immaculate in a custom charcoal suit—the exact suit I had helped him pick out last Tuesday. He was looking down at a crisp white marriage license in his hands.

"Evelyn will understand," Adrian said. His tone was completely calm, as if he were discussing a rescheduled quarterly review.

"Understand?" Daniel let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "Man, listen to yourself. Evelyn has been with you for seven years. She waited while you built the company from nothing. The Long Island invitations are already in the mail, and her wedding dress is literally hanging in the closet of your penthouse right now."

Adrian didn't even look up from the paper. In fact, a faint, confident smile touched the corner of his mouth.

"That's exactly why she won't leave me over one month," Adrian said.

The cardboard edge of the chocolate box buckled under my thumb, caving inward with a soft crunch.

"Richard is in the ICU," Adrian continued, his voice dropping into that smooth, rational cadence he used with his board of directors. "The doctors said it’s a matter of weeks, maybe days. He paid my tuition when I had nothing, Daniel. His only dying wish is to see his daughter married to the student he sponsored. I owe him that peace of mind."

"By legally marrying Claire?" Daniel pressed. "Today? On the exact morning you're supposed to marry Evelyn?"

"It’s a temporary arrangement," Adrian replied, sliding the marriage license into his inside jacket pocket. "We sign the papers today so Richard can see the certificate. After he passes, Claire and I will file for a quiet annulment or divorce, and I’ll marry Evelyn as planned. Nothing about the Long Island wedding even has to change."

Daniel went quiet for a second. "Did you tell Evelyn any of this?"

Adrian adjusted his cuffs. "Why upset her over something that doesn't mean anything?"

I stood frozen behind the marble column, the air in my lungs turning to lead. *She won't leave me over one month.*

Seven years ago, Adrian Blackwood hadn't been a tech CEO worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He had been a broke twenty-three-year-old coder who couldn't afford his share of a cramped Brooklyn walk-up. I remembered the winter the radiator broke in his tiny rented office, how I had slept curled up beside him on a threadbare sofa under two coats because he refused to leave his servers. When his first round of funding fell through, I had taken my late mother’s vintage jewelry collection to a dealer on 47th Street and handed Adrian the check so he could make payroll for his first four employees.

Now his company dominated the market, his net worth was in the nine figures, and he stood in a custom suit giving away my wedding day because he was certain I was too invested to walk away.

Through the glass door of the waiting area, a slender woman stepped toward him. Claire wore a tailored pearl-white tweed suit, her blonde hair curled softly around her face. When she reached Adrian, she looked up at him with damp, fragile eyes.

Adrian didn't pull away. He raised a hand and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his thumb brushing her cheek before he placed a steadying hand on the small of her back. Together, they turned and walked toward the officiant waiting inside the ceremony room.

I didn't push through the glass doors. I didn't scream his name or throw the crushed box of chocolates at his back.

Instead, I turned around and walked to the main service desk at the front of the hall.

A clerk in a navy cardigan looked up with a warm smile. "Good morning. Checking in for a ten o'clock ceremony?"

"No," I said. My voice sounded remarkably steady, though it felt like it was coming from someone else. "I need to cancel an appointment. Evelyn Bennett and Adrian Blackwood. Ten-thirty."

The woman’s smile faded into polite surprise as she typed on her keyboard. "Oh, I see it right here. Are you sure, dear? We're booked out quite far this season. If you cancel now, rescheduling might take several weeks."

I looked down at the gold-stamped initials on the crushed box in my hand.

"There won't be another appointment," I said softly.

Ten minutes later, I stepped out onto the concrete steps of the municipal building. As the brisk wind hit my face, my phone buzzed inside my coat pocket.

I pulled it out. A text from Adrian lit up the screen.

*Board emergency. Need to postpone today. I'll make it up to you.*

Right now, he was standing inside that building, repeating vows to another woman, and he didn't even bother to invent a complicated lie. A five-second text was all he thought I required.

My thumbs didn't shake as I typed back a single word.

*Okay.*

I slipped the phone back into my pocket and took the subway uptown to the private elementary school where I taught fifth-grade literature. I wasn't going to sit in our empty penthouse staring at a garment bag that held a wedding dress I would never wear.

By the fifth period, we were reading an old fairy tale compilation. Twenty eleven-year-olds sat in neat rows while autumn sunlight slanted across the wooden desks.

Near the front, a girl with braided hair raised her hand. "Miss Bennett?"

"Yes, Chloe?"

"Why does the princess in the tower keep waiting for the prince?" Chloe frowned down at her open book. "He already broke his promise twice. Why doesn't she just climb down the ivy by herself?"

The classroom went quiet. I looked at the open page in my hand, then walked over to the chalkboard. Picking up a piece of white chalk, I wrote a single sentence in neat, clear cursive across the slate.

*Because she hasn't realized she can leave.*

I set the chalk down in the tray, dusting the white powder from my fingertips. "Sometimes people stay in places they've outgrown because they only remember how hard they worked to build the tower, Chloe. Not because the door is actually locked."

When the final bell rang at three-thirty, several teachers from my department gathered around my desk in the faculty lounge.

"Wait, Evelyn, what are you doing here?" Sarah, who taught art down the hall, stared at me wide-eyed. "Weren't you supposed to be at City Hall this morning?"

"Plans changed," I said lightly. I untied the silk ribbon on the dented gold box and set it open on the breakroom table. The chocolates had softened slightly from the warmth of the classroom, the gold *E & A* initials smudging at the edges. "Please, take some. Otherwise they'll go to waste."

I left the lounge before anyone could ask follow-up questions.

Dusk was settling over the city in shades of slate blue when my phone finally rang. I was standing by my classroom window, packing my lesson planner into my leather tote.

Adrian’s name flashed on the screen.

I answered and lifted the phone to my ear without saying hello.

"Hey, Evie," Adrian said. His voice was warm, low, and practiced in its tenderness. Behind him, I could clearly hear the rhythmic, high-pitched beep of a hospital monitor and the faint, delicate sound of a woman sniffling. "What a brutal day. I’m sorry about this morning. I missed you."

He wasn't going to tell me. Even now, with the ink dry on the license, he intended to keep lying.

"Did you marry Claire today?" I asked.

The silence on the other end of the line was sudden and absolute. Even the background noise seemed to recede for several seconds, as if he had stepped into an empty hallway and pressed a hand over the receiver.

Then, to my disbelief, Adrian let out a long, quiet breath of relief.

"So you know," he said, the tension vanishing from his voice. "Good. Daniel told you, I assume? Honestly, it’s better that it's out in the open. Then you understand why I had to do it."

I stared out the window at the stream of red taillights moving down Madison Avenue. For seven years, I had thought Adrian knew me better than anyone alive. Now I realized he didn't see me as a person at all. He saw me as a permanent fixture in his life—something he had already paid for and secured. He hadn't even considered the possibility that he might lose me today.

"And what am I supposed to be for the next month?" I asked evenly.

"The woman I'm going to marry," Adrian replied without a second of hesitation. "Just a little later. Don't overthink this, Evie. I'll be home late tonight, okay? Richard is having a rough evening and Claire needs someone here."

Before I could answer, a notification banner dropped down at the top of my phone screen.

It was an Instagram alert from Claire’s account.

Keeping the phone on speaker, I tapped the notification. The photo loaded instantly. It had been taken in the dim, sterile glow of a hospital room. Claire’s hand was resting over Adrian’s on the white bedsheet beside an elderly man's frail arm. On both of their ring fingers, matching platinum bands caught the overhead light, gleaming brightly.

Beneath the photo, Claire’s caption read: *My husband made my father's final wish come true.*

And right below the image, posted less than two minutes ago, was a red heart.
