Chapter 2

EMMA'S POV

I didn't sleep. By seven the next morning, I had wrapped my blistered fingers in gauze, pulled a pair of thin black gloves over them, and driven to the office like it was any other Tuesday.

The Harlow account presentation was at nine. I had spent four months on that pitch. Whatever Ryan had done to my life overnight, I wasn't going to let him take that too.

I tapped my badge against the reader outside the conference wing.

Red light. A flat little beep.

I tried again. Red.

"Emma?" Kayla at the front desk was half-standing, her face pink. "Sorry, um. HR asked me to send you to Room 4B first. Before anything else."

"My badge isn't working."

"I know." She wouldn't look at me. "They said they'd explain."

I walked through the open floor toward 4B. Halfway down the row of desks, I heard my own voice, tinny and screaming, coming out of somebody's phone. Mark from accounts flipped his screen face down so fast it clattered against the desk. Two women by the printer stopped talking.

Nobody said good morning.

Dana Kowalski from HR was waiting in 4B with a manila folder. She didn't offer coffee. She slid a stack of printouts across the table toward me, and I recognized the frame immediately. Me, on my knees at the fireplace, tongs in my hand, mouth open in a scream.

"We received a formal harassment complaint late last night," Dana said. "Combined with the public nature of this video, we have to act."

"Act how?"

She folded her hands. "Emma, we're placing you on administrative suspension while we investigate. You'll be removed from the Harlow project, effective immediately."

I stared at the screenshot. My gloved fingers throbbed against the table.

"Who filed the complaint?"

Dana glanced toward the door, and it opened as if on cue.

Sophia walked in wearing a soft gray cardigan, no makeup, eyes swollen red. She took the chair beside Dana, not across from me, and pressed a tissue to her nose.

"I didn't want to do this," she said quietly. "I really didn't."

Twelve hours ago she'd been sitting on my bed in my robe.

"Ms. Russo reports that you've been threatening her over a personal relationship," Dana said, reading from her notes. "And that you've used your role as project lead to cut her out of client meetings."

"She's never been on my team," I said. "She's in procurement."

"You blocked my transfer request," Sophia said, voice wobbling. "Twice. And last night you grabbed me. I have a bruise, Emma."

She tugged her cardigan sleeve up. There was nothing on her wrist. Dana looked anyway, nodding like there was.

I understood it then, sitting in that cold little room. Ryan wasn't enough for her. She wanted the desk I sat at, the account I'd built, the name I'd made here. She wanted all of it.

"The video is edited," I said to Dana. "It starts after Ryan threw my mother's last letter into the fire. I was trying to pull it out. That's why I'm wearing gloves." I peeled one off and set my bandaged hand on the table. "That's what the tongs were for."

Dana's eyes dropped to the gauze. For a second, something shifted in her face.

Then Sophia started crying. Real, shaking sobs, the tissue crushed into a damp ball in her fist.

"She always does this," she whispered. "She always has a reason."

I turned to her. "You kissed my boyfriend in my bedroom, Sophia. Now you're asking my employer to protect you from me?"

"Emma," Dana said sharply. "That's not appropriate."

"No. What's not appropriate is suspending me based on a forty-second clip." I pulled the printouts back toward me and squared the edges. "I want a formal investigation. Witness statements, the full timeline, and my account recorded word for word. Not summarized. Recorded."

Dana hesitated, then slid a form across the table. *Notice of Recording.* I signed it with my left hand. She pressed a button on her laptop, and I told her everything, start to finish, while Sophia sniffled beside her and didn't say one more word.

When I was done, Dana handed me the suspension notice. I folded it into my bag without reading it twice. I gave her my personal email, and she sent me the recording before I left.

---

Security walked me out with a cardboard box. It held a framed photo of my mom, a coffee mug, and the glass Rising Star award I'd won last year. The award rattled against the side every time I took a step.

Ryan was in the parking garage.

He was leaning against his new Audi, keys spinning around one finger, like he was waiting to pick me up from the dentist. He didn't look at my hand.

"Sophia's really shaken up," he said. "You need to apologize to her."

I stopped walking. "You let her file a harassment complaint against me."

"She was scared. You put your hands on her."

"I touched her wrist while she was wearing my robe, Ryan."

He sighed, the way he did when a client asked a stupid question. "Look, I don't need this getting messy. Sophia matters to Brightlane. When the company was going under, she put money in. She's the reason I'm standing here."

The box slipped. I caught it against my hip, and the award clunked against the cardboard.

"She put money in," I repeated.

"Yeah."

"Two years ago, I sold my mother's house." My voice was low. "I sat in that lawyer's office and signed it away, and I handed you three hundred and forty thousand dollars to pay off your debts. That's what kept Brightlane alive. Not her."

He actually shrugged.

"That was a gift, Emma. You offered."

"Because you were drowning."

"You gave me that money because you loved me. Sophia invested in my future. There's a difference."

I set the box on the hood of a stranger's car before I dropped it.

Then I unzipped my wallet and took out the key.

It was brass, worn smooth at the edges, still on the little blue ring Mom kept by her front door. The new owners had changed the locks. I'd kept it anyway.

I held it up between us.

"Do you remember what you said when I signed those papers?" I asked. "You held my hand so hard it hurt. You said one day you'd buy that house back for me. You swore it."

His eyes flicked to the key, then away, bored.

"Honestly? If you hadn't spent three years dragging your mom into everything, I'd have had an easier life a long time ago." He opened the passenger door. "Get in. We'll talk at home. And stop chasing Sophia around the office."

I looked at the open door. At the leather seat my money had probably paid for.

"No," I said.

"Emma."

"Then enjoy the future she bought for you, Ryan. Just don't expect me to be part of it."

I picked up my box and walked toward the street. My burned hand hurt too much to drive, so I left my car in the garage. He called my name once. He didn't follow.

---

It was raining by the time the cab pulled up outside our building. I asked the driver to wait.

Upstairs, the apartment still smelled like smoke. The ruined cake was gone from the dresser, the ash swept out of the fireplace like nothing had ever burned there. I packed one suitcase. Clothes, my laptop, Mom's photo from the box. I didn't take anything he'd bought me.

The suitcase handle snapped up with a click, and I rolled it out the door without looking back.

In the cab, rain streaked sideways across the window. I held the brass key in my good hand and watched the city blur past.

My phone lit up.

Sophia had posted a photo. She and Ryan at a bar, champagne flutes raised, his arm around her waist. *Big things coming for Brightlane. So grateful to everyone who truly believed in him.* 🥂

Already two hundred likes.

I almost closed it. Then I zoomed in.

Her hand was resting on Ryan's chest, and just above it, catching the bar lights, was a thin gold chain with a small oval locket.

My fingers went still on the screen.

I knew that locket. My mother wore it every day of my life. After the funeral, Ryan told me he'd lost it during the move.

Now it was hanging around Sophia's neck.
