He Filmed Me Breaking Down, Then Watched Me Take Back Everything Chapter 1

EMMA'S POV

The cake box was still cold against my palm when I stepped off the elevator.

Six years. Chocolate with raspberry filling, Ryan's favorite, and a bottle of the champagne we'd opened the night he asked me to move in. I'd left work two hours early to surprise him, and I was already smiling as I walked toward our door.

The hallway smelled like burning wood. Ryan must have lit the fireplace.

Three years ago, that smell would have made me sick. The night my mom died, I sat in a plastic hospital chair while someone's dinner burned in the staff lounge down the hall, and Ryan held me against his chest so tightly I could barely breathe.

"I'll take care of you now," he'd whispered into my hair. "I promised her. I'll take care of you."

Later, when my aunt reached for the letter Mom left me, Ryan had stopped her hand. "Careful. That paper's thin. Let Emma hold it."

I unlocked the door, set the champagne on the counter, and carried the cake down the hall. The bedroom door was cracked open. Firelight flickered across the floor.

I pushed it wider.

Sophia was sitting on the edge of our bed in my white silk robe, the one Ryan bought me for my birthday. Ryan stood between her knees with his hand in her hair, his mouth on hers. Folded beside them was the stack of sheets I'd washed yesterday.

The cake box hit the doorframe. The lid popped, and buttercream slid down the cardboard and onto the carpet.

They broke apart.

"Ryan," I said, and my voice came out strangely calm. "Why is my best friend wearing my clothes in our bed?"

He wiped his mouth with his thumb. "Emma. You're early."

That was what he said. Not *I'm sorry*. Not *this isn't what it looks like*. Just that I was early.

I set the ruined cake on the dresser and crossed the room. Sophia had known me since college. She'd helped me pick out the dress I wore to Mom's funeral. I grabbed her wrist.

"Explain it to me," I said. "Right now."

She yanked her arm back like I'd burned her, and tears welled instantly in her eyes. "Emma, please. We didn't plan this. We just... lost control. It was emotional."

Ryan stepped in front of her, one arm out, shielding her from me.

From me.

"Don't touch her," he said.

"Don't touch *her*?" I laughed, and it sounded awful. "She's in my robe, Ryan."

Sophia peeked around his shoulder, cheeks wet. "This is exactly the problem. You always make everything about your dead mother, Emma. Even tonight."

"I haven't said a word about my mother."

"You don't have to. Every time he tries to leave, every time he's unhappy, you look at him with those sad eyes and he feels like a monster for even thinking it."

Ryan didn't contradict her. He was close enough now that I caught the scent on his shirt. Roses. Heavy and sweet.

I knew that smell. It had been on his collar every night he came home late from "the quarterly push." It was on him after the Denver trip, the Chicago trip. And Sophia had always known exactly when he'd be gone. *Oh, Ryan's in Austin till Thursday, right? Let's do wine.* I'd thought she was just paying attention to my life.

She'd been paying attention to his.

There was a smear of pink lipstick near the second button of his shirt. On the nightstand, next to my water glass, sat a second wineglass with a matching print on the rim.

"How long?" I asked him.

He ignored me and turned to Sophia. "Did she scratch you? Let me see."

He lifted her wrist and inspected it like I'd attacked her with a knife.

"Answer me, Ryan. How long?"

"Lower your voice."

"Get her out of my bedroom."

Sophia backed away, toward the fireplace, hugging the robe tighter. Her hip bumped the side table, and the cedar box on top of it tipped over and hit the floor. The lid snapped open.

My mother's letter slid out onto the hardwood.

I dropped to my knees immediately. The cream-colored paper had come halfway out of its envelope, and I gathered it carefully, smoothing the corner flat with my fingertips.

Above me, Ryan let out a short, cold laugh.

"Unbelievable. We're in the middle of this, and you go for the letter."

"She knocked it over."

"Of course she did. Here we go." He crouched beside me. "You do this every time, Emma. Mom this, Mom's letter that. You use her to keep me on a leash."

"That's not true." My throat burned. "You know what this is. She couldn't hold a pen by the end. Her hands shook so badly it took her three days to write two pages. You were there."

"Yeah. I was there. I've been there for three years." He plucked the letter right out of my hands. "And I'm done competing with a dead woman."

"Ryan, give it back."

He stood and walked to the fireplace.

I scrambled up and grabbed his arm with both hands. "Please. Please, I'll do whatever you want. Just give it back."

He looked down at me, and for one second I thought I saw the man from the hospital hallway.

"Your mother is dead, Emma," he said. "Stop using her to control me."

He opened his fingers.

The letter fell into the flames while my hand was still reaching for it.

I lunged at the hearth. Sparks jumped. The edges of the paper curled inward, and I watched my mother's handwriting, those shaky, careful loops, darken and shrink. *My sweet girl* was the first line. I watched it turn black.

I snatched the metal tongs from the stand and shoved them into the fire, knocking the logs aside. Heat seared my knuckles. One piece was still whole near the grate, its corner glowing red, and I tried to pinch it free. My fingertips blistered against the hot metal.

"Emma, stop!" Sophia sobbed behind me. "You're scaring me!"

"Help me," I gasped, turning. "Ryan, help me get it out..."

He was holding his phone up. The red recording dot glowed in the corner of the screen.

"Here she goes again," he said to the camera, voice low and wounded. "This is what I deal with. She's having another episode."

I dropped the tongs and went for the phone. He lifted it over his head easily, stepping back, still filming. I grabbed his sleeve, and he twisted away.

When I looked back at the fireplace, the last piece of paper was gone. Just gray ash drifting up the chimney.

I stood there with my burned hand curled against my chest.

"Go ahead, Ryan," I whispered. "Show them what you just did to me."

He didn't answer. He just stopped the recording.

Five minutes later, my phone buzzed on the dresser beside the collapsed cake. I picked it up with shaking fingers.

Ryan had posted the video. The caption read: *Six years. I've tried to help her. Tonight she got violent again. I don't know what to do anymore.*

It already had hundreds of views. In the clip, I was kneeling at a fire with tongs in my hand, screaming, my hair wild. You couldn't see the letter. You couldn't see the robe.

A text came in from Jenna in Marketing. *Em, are you okay?? What is happening in that video??*

Then a banner slid down from the top of my screen.

An email. From Human Resources.

I tapped it open.
