Chapter 3

I sat on my apartment floor with a glass of wine I hadn't touched. The bottle stood on the coffee table. Unopened. I'd pulled it from the rack an hour ago, thinking I'd need it. But my hands were steady. My breathing was even.

I picked up my phone and called Dad.

He answered on the first ring. "Scarlett."

"I want to cancel the engagement." My voice came out flat. Matter-of-fact. Like I was discussing a failed investment.

Silence. Then: "Check your phone."

"Dad, I don't need—"

"Check it. Now."

The line went dead.

I pulled the phone from my ear and stared at the screen. A notification appeared. New message from Marcus Chen. Dad's head of intelligence. The man who'd taught me how to read balance sheets when I was twelve.

I opened it.

A file. Encrypted. Password protected.

I typed the password Dad had used since I was a kid. My mother's birthday.

The file opened.

The first image was a photograph. Timestamped three months ago. A suburban driveway in New Jersey. Bennett stood beside a silver SUV. Nayeli was in his arms. Not a friendly hug. Not a business partner hug. His hand was in her hair. Her mouth was on his.

I scrolled.

More photographs. Bennett pushing a stroller down a tree-lined sidewalk. Nayeli beside him, her hand on his back. A toddler in the stroller. Dark hair. Bennett's jawline. His eyes.

Another photo. The three of them at a grocery store. Bennett holding the child on his hip while Nayeli compared cereal boxes. Domestic. Easy. Practiced.

Timestamps ran back three years.

Three years.

I kept scrolling. My hand didn't shake.

A birth certificate. Baby boy. Born two years and four months ago. Father: Bennett Tucker. Mother: Nayeli Ward.

A private investigator's report. Thirty pages. Rental records for the New Jersey house. Joint bank account. Utility bills in both names. Pediatrician visits. The child's name was Ethan.

The last document was a DNA paternity analysis. Pre-certified. Laboratory sealed. Probability of paternity: 99.97%.

My phone rang. Dad.

I answered.

"Did you read it?" His voice was clinical. Detached. The voice he used in boardrooms when someone tried to lowball him.

"Yes."

"All of it?"

"Yes."

Silence stretched between us. I heard him breathing. Steady. Waiting.

"I didn't raise you to cry," he said finally. "Now—what are you going to do?"

I looked at the photographs spread across my phone screen. Bennett's hand in Nayeli's hair. The baby on his hip. The grocery store. The stroller.

Every time he'd called me paranoid. Every time he'd told me I was overreacting. Every time he'd wrapped his arms around Nayeli and made me feel like the villain.

Calculated. Choreographed. A performance.

The $8 million I'd given him wasn't an investment in our future. It was tribute. Payment extracted by a con artist who saw a naive girl with a trust fund and decided to play the long game.

I thought about the swimsuit. The matching piece he'd given her. Not careless. Not thoughtless. A test. Pushing boundaries. Seeing how much I'd tolerate before I broke.

I thought about tomorrow's engagement party. Five hundred guests. Live-streaming cameras. Wall Street's biggest names. Bennett had insisted on merging it with the IPO launch gala. Maximum visibility. Maximum validation.

He wanted a stage.

I'd give him one.

"Scarlett?" Dad's voice cut through my thoughts.

I opened my laptop. Pulled up the guest list for tomorrow's party. Investors. Journalists. Bennett's entire professional network. The people whose opinions could make or break a company.

"I'm going to destroy him," I said.

My voice was calm. Even. The same tone I'd use to order coffee.

Dad was quiet for a moment. Then: "How?"

"Publicly. Completely. I'm going to wait until tomorrow night. Until he's on stage in front of everyone. And then I'm going to burn his entire world down."

"The IPO—"

"Will collapse. I know."

"Your $8 million—"

"Is already gone. He spent it. I'm not getting it back by being nice."

Another pause. I heard the approval in his silence.

"What do you need?" he asked.

"Marcus. Isabelle. Full access to Daniels Capital's legal and intelligence resources. And I need shell accounts. Offshore. Clean. Ready to move the second his stock price crashes."

"You're going to short him."

"I'm going to gut him."

Dad exhaled. Not disapproval. Something else. Something that sounded almost like pride.

"I'll have Marcus and Isabelle contact you within the hour. Scarlett—" He stopped.

I waited.

"Make it clean. Make it irreversible. And make sure he knows exactly who did it to him."

"I will."

The line went dead.

I set my phone down. Opened a new document on my laptop. Titled it: *Plaza Gala—Execution Plan.*

I stared at the blank page.

Then I started typing.

No tears. No shaking. Just the cold, precise architecture of revenge.

Bennett thought he'd won. Thought he'd trained me to submit. Thought I'd spend tomorrow night apologizing to Nayeli in front of everyone while he collected his IPO payout and his secret family stayed hidden.

He had no idea.

I wasn't the girl he'd manipulated anymore.

I was my father's daughter.

And I was done playing nice.
