Chapter 4

I called Bennett at nine the next morning. My voice shook when he picked up. Not because I was scared. Because I'd practiced it in the mirror for twenty minutes until it sounded right.

"Bennett? It's me."

Silence on the other end. Then: "Scarlett."

His tone was careful. Guarded. Like I was a bomb that might go off.

"I'm sorry," I said. I let my voice crack. "I'm so sorry. For everything. The pool, Nayeli, all of it. I was wrong."

More silence. I heard him breathing.

"I've been thinking all night," I continued. "You were right. Nayeli is essential. She's been with you from the beginning. And I—I let my insecurity get in the way. I was jealous and petty and I hate myself for it."

"Scarlett—"

"Please. Let me finish." I took a shaky breath. "I love you. I love what we're building together. And if that means respecting Nayeli, respecting your partnership with her, then that's what I'll do. I'll apologize. Publicly. However you want. Just—please don't call off the engagement."

The silence stretched longer this time.

Then Bennett exhaled. Relief. Pure, audible relief.

"Okay," he said. His voice softened. "Okay. I'm glad you see it now. This is good, Scarlett. This is the right choice."

I closed my eyes. Smiled at the wall.

"I want to make this right," I said. "Whatever it takes."

"We'll talk tonight. At the party. You'll apologize to Nayeli in front of everyone, and then we move forward. Clean slate."

"Clean slate," I repeated.

When I hung up, my hands were steady.

I opened my laptop and sent an encrypted message to Marcus Chen: *Phase One complete. Proceed to technical setup.*

Then I poured myself coffee and waited.

Two hours later, Bennett called again.

"Nayeli had an idea," he said. His tone was bright. Excited. "For the engagement party."

I stirred sugar into my coffee. "Oh?"

"She thinks we should merge it with the IPO launch gala. Make it a dual celebration. The Plaza can handle the scale—we're talking five hundred guests. Investors, press, live-streaming coverage. It would be incredible exposure for the company."

I let the silence hang for exactly three seconds.

"That's brilliant," I said.

Bennett laughed. Relieved again. "You think so?"

"Absolutely. Nayeli's instincts are always sharp. And The Plaza—that's perfect. Elegant. High-profile." I paused. "I'd love to help with the guest list. Make sure we get the right people there."

"Really? That would be amazing. Nayeli will be thrilled."

I bet she would.

"Send me what you have so far," I said. "I'll coordinate with my contacts. We'll make this unforgettable."

"Scarlett—" His voice went soft. Tender. The voice he used when he wanted something. "Thank you. For being reasonable. For understanding."

"Of course," I said. "We're partners, right?"

The word tasted like acid.

"Right," Bennett said. "Partners."

When I hung up, I opened a new document and titled it: *Plaza Gala—Final Guest List.*

I added names. Carefully. Strategically.

Every major investor in Bennett's funding rounds. Every journalist who'd covered his company. Every Wall Street analyst who'd expressed interest in the IPO. The managing directors of three competing venture capital firms. Two SEC regulators I'd met at charity galas. A Bloomberg reporter who owed my father a favor.

I sent the list to Marcus with a single instruction: *Confirm attendance. Priority alpha.*

Then I called Isabelle Foster.

She answered on the first ring. "Ms. Daniels."

"I need broadcast-quality video. Surveillance footage, DNA documentation, hospital records. Formatted for LED display. Runtime under eight minutes. Can you have it ready by tomorrow night?"

"What resolution?"

"Plaza ballroom main screen. Assume 4K."

"Timeline?"

"Thirty-six hours."

A pause. Then: "I'll have it to you in twenty-four."

"Thank you, Isabelle."

I hung up and dialed Diego Alvarez.

"Ms. Daniels," he said. His voice was clipped. Professional.

"I need a security detail at The Plaza tomorrow night. Embedded. Invisible. Catering uniforms, service positions. Primary objective: control the AV booth and prevent access to the main display controls."

"How many personnel?"

"Six. Armed, but discreet. If anyone tries to cut the feed, they stop them. Non-lethally if possible."

"Understood. Anything else?"

"Yes. I'll need an exit route. Private. No cameras. In case things get loud."

"Consider it done."

I ended the call and stared at my laptop screen.

The guest list glowed. Five hundred names. Five hundred witnesses.

Bennett wanted a stage. Nayeli wanted the spotlight.

I'd give them both.

My phone buzzed. A text from Bennett.

*Nayeli says thank you for being so gracious about the gala. She's really looking forward to tomorrow night.*

I typed back: *Me too. It's going to be unforgettable.*

I hit send.

Then I opened my offshore trading accounts and began positioning short orders. Timed triggers. Automated execution. The second Bennett's stock price began to fall, the algorithm would activate. Sell. Buy. Consolidate.

By the time the dust settled, I'd own controlling interest.

My phone buzzed again. Marcus.

*All technical assets in place. Video file secured. Plaza AV system accessed. We're green across the board.*

I replied: *Good. Stay on standby.*

I closed my laptop.

Tomorrow night, Bennett would stand on stage at The Plaza. He'd smile for the cameras. He'd toast his IPO. He'd introduce Nayeli as his indispensable partner.

And then I'd show him exactly what indispensable meant.

No tears. No hesitation.

Just the cold, clean execution of a plan.

I poured another cup of coffee and watched the sun set over Manhattan.

The Iron Princess was done playing dead.
