Chapter 2

I woke up at six. My eyes opened and I stared at the ceiling. No tears. No shaking. Just the memory of Bennett's arms around Nayeli and the word *partners* echoing in my head.

I got up. Showered. Put on a white linen dress. Simple. Innocent. The kind of dress that said *I've learned my lesson.*

My phone buzzed. A text from Bennett.

*Pool brunch at 11. Everyone will be there. This is your chance to make things right.*

I didn't reply.

I looked at myself in the mirror. My reflection looked calm. Composed. The Iron Princess my father raised, wearing the face of a girl who'd been put in her place.

Perfect.

I arrived at the penthouse at eleven sharp. The elevator doors opened onto the rooftop. Bright sunlight. The smell of chlorine and expensive sunscreen. Laughter drifted from the pool area.

I stepped out.

The terrace was full. Bennett's business associates. Mutual friends. Evan stood by the bar, his expression careful when he saw me. Everyone knew about last night. Everyone was waiting to see what I'd do.

Nayeli reclined on a lounge chair by the pool's edge. She wore a different bikini today—white, with gold chains at the hips. Her sunglasses were huge. Designer. She looked like a woman who'd won something.

Bennett stood near her, talking to two investors. He saw me and his posture shifted. Wary. Expectant.

I walked toward them. My sandals clicked on the tile. Conversations quieted. Heads turned.

Nayeli lowered her sunglasses. Her smile was slow. Triumphant.

"Scarlett," she said. Sweet. Victorious. "I'm so glad you came."

I stopped beside her lounge chair. I folded my hands in front of me. Demure. Apologetic.

"I wanted to apologize," I said. My voice was soft. Contrite. "For last night. I was out of line."

Nayeli's smile widened. She sat up slightly, adjusting her position so everyone had a clear view. "Go on."

"I let my emotions get the better of me. The wedding stress, the pressure—it's no excuse. You didn't deserve that."

Bennett's shoulders relaxed. He nodded slightly, like a teacher watching a difficult student finally get the right answer.

Nayeli tilted her head. "And?"

"And I'm sorry. Truly. I hope you can forgive me."

I reached out. A peace offering. My hand extended toward her shoulder.

Nayeli leaned back into the lounge chair, basking in her victory. "Well, I appreciate—"

I grabbed the ties of her bikini top and yanked.

The fabric released. The top fell away.

For one perfect second, there was silence.

Then Nayeli shrieked. Her hands flew to her chest. She scrambled to cover herself, twisting sideways, her sunglasses falling into the pool with a splash.

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Phones rose. Cameras pointed.

"Oh my god—"

"Did she just—"

"Someone get a towel—"

I stood over her, perfectly still. My expression was serene. Composed.

"Oops," I said. My voice was light. Almost friendly. "I thought since you love wearing what's mine, you wouldn't mind sharing the experience."

Nayeli's face was scarlet. Tears streamed down her cheeks—real ones this time, not the performance from last night. She clutched Bennett's discarded shirt from a nearby chair, pressing it to her chest.

"You—you psycho!" Her voice cracked. "You're insane!"

Footsteps pounded across the tile. Bennett appeared, his face twisted with rage. He ripped off his jacket and wrapped it around Nayeli's shoulders, pulling her up from the lounge chair.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" He turned on me, his voice low and dangerous. "Are you out of your mind?"

I met his eyes. Calm. Unflinching.

"I apologized. Just like you asked."

"This is—" He stopped. His jaw worked. "This is done. We're done."

The crowd had gone silent. Phones were still raised. Recording. Watching.

Bennett's arm tightened around Nayeli. "I gave you a chance. I asked you to be reasonable. To respect the woman who's been essential to everything I've built. And this is how you act?"

"Essential," I repeated. The word tasted bitter.

"Yes. Essential." His voice rose. "Nayeli has been with me from the beginning. She's my partner. My co-founder. And you—you're just—"

He stopped himself. But I heard the rest.

*You're just the money.*

The truth hung between us. Unspoken but clear.

Bennett's expression hardened. "Here's what's going to happen. You're going to submit. Fully. Publicly. On Nayeli's terms. You're going to issue a formal apology at the engagement party tomorrow night. In front of everyone. And you're going to mean it."

He stepped closer. His voice dropped. "Or the engagement is off. The wedding is off. Everything is off. Do you understand?"

I looked at him. At the man I'd loved. The man I'd given eight million dollars to save. The man whose arms were wrapped around another woman while he threatened me.

I saw it clearly now. I'd never been his fiancée. I'd been a transaction. A line item on a balance sheet.

I smiled.

Not the blueprint smile from last night. Something colder. Sharper.

"Okay," I said.

Bennett blinked. "Okay?"

"Okay. I'll do exactly what you want."

Relief flickered across his face. He thought he'd won. Again.

I turned and walked away. Behind me, I heard Nayeli sobbing into Bennett's chest. I heard him murmuring reassurances. I heard the crowd's whispers starting up again.

I didn't look back.

The elevator doors closed. I pulled out my phone.

Last night I'd called my father. He'd listened in silence as I told him I wanted to cancel the engagement. Then he'd said one sentence: *"I'll send you a file. Read it first. Then decide."*

The file had arrived at midnight.

Surveillance footage. Bank records. A private investigator's report.

Photographs of Bennett and Nayeli entering a house in New Jersey. Photographs of Nayeli pushing a stroller. Photographs of Bennett holding a toddler with his eyes.

A DNA report. Certified. Official.

Bennett Tucker was the father of Nayeli Ward's two-year-old son.

I'd read the entire file twice. Then I'd gone to sleep.

Now I opened my messages and typed.

*Dad. I'm ready. Let's do this properly.*

The reply came instantly.

*Good. I'll have Marcus and Isabelle contact you within the hour.*

I stepped out of the elevator into the lobby. Sunlight streamed through the glass doors.

I wasn't sad. I wasn't hurt.

I was surgical.

And Bennett Tucker had no idea what was coming.
