Cast aside as mere hired help to make room for his new bride-to-be, I am stripped of my rightful widow's seat. They think I am defeated as I walk out, completely unaware that I hold the keys to the €18.6 million trust and the castle itself. Soon, the tables will turn, leaving them to beg in the rain.

Chapter 1

At my father-in-law's funeral, my husband gave my seat to the woman who abandoned his son.

For twelve years, I had been Declan Fitzwilliam's legal wife in secret.

I restored forty-seven rooms of Blackwater Castle, recorded seven years of his father's night medicine, and raised Finn from six to nineteen.

Declan asked me to hide our marriage until the family trust passed safely to his son.

Then Finn stood beside the coffin and introduced his birth mother as the future Duchess of Blackwater.

He called me the paid caretaker who had confused service with belonging.

I did not interrupt the prayers.

I folded the funeral program, showed security the master conservation key that was mine, and walked out before either of them could dismiss me twice.

They believed the castle, the art, and eighteen million euros would follow their surname.

The old duke had left one green codicil.

“Remove Ms. Callahan from the family pew—she was never Declan's wife.”

***

The twelfth toll of the Blackwater chapel bell rattled the stained-glass windows, vibrating through the wooden floorboards beneath my feet. Dust motes danced in the shafts of coloured light cutting through the dim chapel. I stepped toward the front row, reaching for the braided velvet rope that guarded the family pew.

"That seat isn't for you, Maeve."

Declan stepped into the aisle. His black mourning suit was perfectly tailored, his expression carved from cold marble. He blocked my path to the velvet-cushioned bench.

I stared past his broad shoulder. A black lace nameplate rested on the polished wood of the front pew. It didn't bear my name.

It read: Isobel.

"Isobel?" I kept my voice to a sharp whisper, mindful of the aristocrats filling the rows behind us. "I have been your legal wife for twelve years, Declan. I belong in that seat."

"Keep your voice down," he muttered, glancing over my head at the gathering crowd. "Paid caregivers don't belong in the family pew."

My fingers tightened on the velvet rope. "Paid caregiver?"

"That is what you were to my father," Declan said smoothly. "Let's not confuse the arrangement."

"I spent three winters sleeping on a cot in the East Wing so the contractors wouldn't steal from your family's trust," I fired back, stepping closer. "I managed the estate's accounts when you were too drunk on your own political ambitions to read a ledger."

"You were compensated for your time," Declan replied. "Generously. My father made sure your bank account reflected your efforts."

"I didn't do it for the money," I said, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. "I bathed and fed Ronan for the last seven years of his life. I sat with him when he forgot his own name. I held his hand while you were in London rubbing elbows with the Prime Minister. I am not your employee, Declan. We signed a marriage certificate."

"A piece of paper hidden in a drawer," he countered, adjusting his silver cufflinks. He refused to meet my eyes, staring instead at the elaborate floral arrangements flanking the casket. "Today, we present a united front for the press. Isobel is Finn's biological mother. It's only right she sits with us to honour my father's passing."

"You invited your ex-wife to take my place at your father's funeral?" I asked. "The woman who abandoned you and Finn thirteen years ago?"

"She isn't just my ex-wife. She is the mother of the heir. She has an old aristocratic name. You have calluses."

A tall shadow fell over us. Finn walked up the aisle, his dark hair slicked back, looking every bit the nineteen-year-old aristocrat. He wore a custom-tailored suit I had picked out for him just last week. I had raised him since he was a six-year-old boy terrified of thunderstorms. I taught him how to tie his shoes. I stayed up all night icing his knees when he fell off his horse. I was the one who held him when he cried for the mother who left him.

"Finn," I said, reaching out to touch his sleeve. "Tell your father this is absurd. Tell him to move the nameplate."

Finn pulled his arm away. He looked at my hand as if it were covered in disease.

"Don't touch my suit, Maeve," Finn said.

I froze. "Finn?"

"Dad is right," Finn continued, his voice loud enough for the first three rows of mourners to hear. "You were paid a salary to manage the house and look after Grandfather. You did your job. We are grateful for your service. But this is a family matter."

My chest tightened. Thirteen years of packed lunches, midnight hospital runs, and parent-teacher conferences vanished in a single, sterile sentence.

"I raised you," I whispered, staring into the eyes of the boy I considered my son. "I was a mother to you."

"You were compensated," Finn replied coldly, echoing his father's exact words. "Isobel gave birth to me. She is Lady Isobel. You are just a commoner who got lucky for a few years. You don't belong in the front row."

Finn turned his back on me and faced the seated guests. He raised his hands, demanding the room's attention.

"Thank you all for coming," Finn announced, his voice carrying easily over the hushed murmurs of the chapel. "My grandfather Ronan would be honoured by your presence. As we mourn his passing, we also look to the future of Blackwater. I am proud to say my mother, Isobel, will be taking her rightful place by my father's side as the next Duchess."

A murmur of approval rippled through the pews.

I stood still.

I looked down at the empty chair beside the velvet rope. A stack of funeral programmes sat on the cushion, printed on heavy, cream-coloured cardstock. I picked one up, my thumb brushing the embossed gold crest of the Blackwater estate.

Bold black letters spelled out the surviving family members.

Declan, unmarried eldest son.

Finn, sole grandson.

Unmarried.

I traced the printed word. Twelve years of hiding our marriage to protect his public image. Twelve years of wearing my wedding ring on a chain around my neck so the press wouldn't ask questions. Twelve years of playing the loyal assistant in public, all for him to erase me the moment he inherited the title of Duke.

"Maeve," Declan warned, stepping closer. His tone dropped to a menacing growl. "Take a seat in the back with the staff. Do not make a scene. The Archbishop is about to begin the prayer."

I looked at the man I had loved. The man I had bled for. The man who had promised me the world

I reached beneath the collar of my mourning dress and pulled the chain free. My plain gold wedding band slid into the coloured chapel light.

"You asked me to hide this," I said. "You said the secrecy protected Ronan from another scandal. You said it would end when he was gone."

Declan's gaze fixed on the ring. For one second, something like fear crossed his face.

Then Isobel entered through the side aisle.

Her veil was pinned with Ronan's emerald crest brooch. She walked toward the front pew as if she had never abandoned the estate, her gloved hand settling possessively on the nameplate bearing her name.

Declan moved between us.

"Take the back seat, Maeve."

"No."

The Archbishop paused at the altar. Reporters near the chapel doors lifted their cameras. The first flash burst across the aisle.

Declan's expression hardened. He raised two fingers toward the security detail.

A guard started toward me.

I closed my hand around the ring and stayed exactly where I was.
