Chapter 2

A heavy hand reached for my sleeve.

"Ma'am, I need you to step away from the family pew," the security guard said. His radio buzzed at his hip.

I sidestepped his grasp. My fingers went into my black velvet clutch. I pulled out the heavy brass restoration key, then unlocked my phone and opened the certified scan of my marriage record.

I held both items high enough for the cameras near the chapel doors to catch the screen.

"Are you removing a staff member," I asked, "or are you forcibly evicting the legal wife of the new Duke?"

The guard froze. His eyes moved from the brass key to the glowing certificate, then to Declan.

"Put that away," Declan hissed. He stepped between me and the nearest camera. "You are embarrassing yourself."

"I am asking a simple question. Tell him who I am. If I am only a paid caregiver, have him drag me out. Let the press photograph the marriage registration while he does it."

Declan's jaw tightened. He offered no denial.

The silence spread through the first rows. The Archbishop lowered his prayer book. Even the organist stopped moving.

Finn stepped beside his father. "Grandfather's service is starting. Stop turning his funeral into a spectacle."

"Your father printed a lie in the funeral programme," I said. "He created the spectacle."

Isobel reached the family pew and placed one gloved hand on the velvet cushion. Ronan's emerald brooch gleamed at her throat.

"The certificate can be reviewed later," she said. "Today is about dignity."

"You abandoned this family thirteen years ago," I replied. "Do not lecture me about dignity while wearing a dead man's gift to his legal daughter-in-law."

Her fingers flew to the brooch.

Declan's voice dropped. "Take a seat in the rear, Maeve. We will discuss this after the burial."

"No. You promised the secrecy ended with Ronan's death. Instead, you erased me before his coffin was closed."

A reporter called from the doorway. "Your Grace, is Ms. Callahan claiming a lawful marriage?"

Another voice followed. "Was the funeral programme deliberately falsified?"

Declan turned toward the press, instantly changing his expression. "This is a private misunderstanding involving an old household arrangement. Out of respect for my father, there will be no questions."

"Then answer one," I said. "Am I your wife?"

His eyes met mine.

For twelve years, I had watched him perform certainty for rooms full of donors, ministers, and titled guests. He always had a sentence ready. Now he had nothing.

The Archbishop stepped down from the altar. "The burial cannot proceed while there is a dispute over the family register."

"There is no dispute," Declan said too quickly. "There is only an employee using a private ceremony to demand status."

I turned my phone so the Archbishop could read the certificate number. "General Register Office record KMR-0614-27. Status active."

The Archbishop studied the screen, then looked at Declan. "That appears clear."

Finn's face hardened. "It has to be a mistake."

"It survived twelve annual tax filings," I said. "It survived the estate insurance declarations. It survived the joint medical authorization your grandfather signed. Clerical mistakes do not renew themselves every year."

The guard slowly lowered his hand.

Declan saw the room slipping away from him. He reached for my wrist, but I moved before he could touch me.

"Do not put your hands on me in front of witnesses," I warned.

The cameras flashed again.

Siobhan Gallagher appeared in the side doorway. As senior executor of Ronan's estate, she had spent the morning with the burial documents. She carried a narrow leather folder under one arm.

"I heard there was a question about the family register," she said.

Declan glared at her. "There is not."

Siobhan ignored him and addressed the Archbishop. "The original certified copy is in the estate archive. Ronan instructed my firm to preserve it with the succession papers."

Isobel's polished composure cracked. "Why would Ronan keep her paperwork with the succession documents?"

"Because he considered it relevant," Siobhan replied.

A low murmur moved through the chapel.

Declan stepped close to Siobhan. "You will not open my father's private archive during his funeral."

"The archive belongs to the estate trust," she said. "Until probate is complete, you do not control it."

I looked at the family pew. Isobel's nameplate still occupied my place. I could have torn it away. I could have sat down and forced the service to proceed around me.

Instead, I placed the funeral programme on the empty cushion.

"I will not fight over a chair while Ronan waits to be buried," I said. "But the record will be opened before anyone issues another statement about this family."

I moved to the side aisle, not the staff rows. Aisling, Ronan's night nurse, made space beside her. She squeezed my hand once as the Archbishop returned to the altar.

The service began.

Declan sat at the front with Isobel and Finn. He never looked back. Yet every time a camera shutter clicked, his shoulders tightened.

When the final prayer ended, the press surged toward the chapel doors. Security tried to form a barrier, but questions cut through it.

"Was there a secret marriage?"

"Is Lady Isobel legally entitled to the Blackwater title?"

"Did the late Duke conceal his son's wife?"

Declan pushed through the side passage toward the estate archive. Isobel and Finn followed him. Siobhan motioned for me to come with her.

The archive room smelled of dust, leather, and cold stone. Siobhan locked the door behind us and placed the narrow folder on the long mahogany table.

Declan planted both palms beside it. "No copies leave this room."

"That depends on what the original says," I replied.

Siobhan broke the blue evidence seal. Inside lay the certified marriage register, the annual verification receipts, and Ronan's handwritten witness statement.

She opened the folder to the spouse section.

My name appeared in black ink beneath Declan's.

Maeve Callahan. Lawful spouse. Registration active.

Finn stared at the page. His lips parted, but no sound came out.

Isobel moved first.

Her manicured hand shot across the table toward the original register.
