Chapter 3

James Chen's office became my sanctuary over the next week. I arrived each morning at eight, coffee in hand, ready to face the mathematical dismantling of eight years.

The audit results arrived in stages, each report a fresh excavation of truth I'd buried under love and loyalty. James spread the documents across his conference table with the clinical precision of a surgeon displaying X-rays.

"Your initial investment," he said, sliding the first folder toward me. "Three hundred fifty thousand dollars from your inheritance. Launch capital for Gray Gallery."

I remembered that day. August's face when I'd shown him the check, how he'd spun me around his empty studio space, promises spilling from his lips like paint. We'll build something beautiful together, Dahlia. This is our dream.

Our dream. My money.

"Subsequent operational investments over eight years." Another folder. "Four hundred twenty thousand dollars covering rent, utilities, insurance, staff salaries during unprofitable quarters."

I'd called those investments "temporary bridges." August had called them "believing in art over commerce." I'd written the checks anyway, telling myself success was just around the corner, that love meant sacrifice.

"Your unpaid labor." James's voice remained neutral, but something flickered in his eyes—perhaps pity, perhaps respect. "Managing all business operations, client relations, marketing, and financial planning. Market rate for your skillset and hours: one hundred twenty-five thousand annually. Eight years."

One million dollars of my life, reduced to a line item. I thought of those late nights reconciling accounts while August attended gallery openings. The weekends I'd spent courting collectors while he painted. The countless times I'd smiled through his dismissals of my contributions as "just paperwork."

"Personal loan guarantees." The folder was thinner but somehow heavier. "Two hundred thousand dollars. Your credit, your liability."

My hands remained steady as I reviewed each document, but something sharp lodged beneath my ribs. These weren't just numbers. They were years of believing I was building our future, not funding his fantasy.

"The equity structure is clear." James pulled out the original partnership agreement, the one I'd insisted on when my mother's attorney had advised me to protect myself. August had signed it without reading, too excited about the gallery launch to care about legal minutiae. "You own sixty percent. Based on current market valuation and your total investment, your stake is worth approximately two point three million dollars."

The number hung in the air like a verdict.

"He can't buy me out," I said. It wasn't a question.

James met my eyes with the steady gaze of someone delivering news he knew I already understood. "Not without significant external financing. Which no bank will provide, given that his entire income stream derives from the gallery you own. His personal assets—roughly eighty thousand in art supplies and unsold works—represent less than four percent of what he'd need."

I nodded slowly, processing the irony. August had built his identity on being a successful artist, a gallery owner, a creative visionary. But stripped of my foundation, he was exactly what he'd been when we met: a talented man with big dreams and empty pockets.

"Draft the separation documents," I said. "Formal share transfer agreement. He has ninety days to either purchase my sixty percent stake for two point three million or vacate the premises."

James made notes, his pen scratching across legal paper. "The attached documentation should include—"

"Everything." My voice came out harder than intended. "Every investment I made. Every client I secured. Every business decision I executed while he painted. I want him to see exactly what he took for granted."

James paused, studying me with the careful assessment of someone who'd witnessed many divorces, both marital and business. "This will be devastating for him."

"Good." The word surprised me with its venom. I softened slightly, but only slightly. "He needs to understand reality. For eight years, I protected him from it. That protection ends now."

When the documents were finalized three days later, I held the manila envelope in both hands, feeling its weight. Inside was the mathematical proof of my value, the concrete evidence that I'd built the empire August claimed as his own.

I thought about delivering them myself, watching his face as reality crashed through his delusions. But that would require seeing him, speaking to him, giving him an opportunity to spin some new narrative where he was the victim of my cruelty.

Instead, I handed the envelope to James's courier and walked out of the office into brilliant autumn sunshine. Somewhere across the city, August was probably at the gallery, surrounded by art he'd created on a foundation I'd built, still believing his talent alone had carried him this far.

In ninety days, he'd learn the truth.

The numbers, unlike love, didn't lie.
