Chapter 2

The morning light felt harsh against my eyes as I made my way to the pack clinic, clipboard in hand and purpose steeling my spine. I'd barely slept, my mind churning through possibilities I didn't want to acknowledge. But a Luna's duty required facing uncomfortable truths, even when they threatened to shatter everything I'd built.

"Good morning, Luna Harper," Dr. Sarah Collins greeted me as I entered the medical wing. "What brings you here so early?"

"Monthly budget review," I replied smoothly, my voice betraying none of the turmoil beneath. "I need to assess our medical supply expenditures and training program costs."

As we walked through the clinic, I catalogued every detail with newfound scrutiny. The scent markers throughout the space told stories I'd previously ignored—traces of different wolves, their emotional states, their recent activities. My Luna instincts, dormant for too long in the comfort of trust, awakened with sharp clarity.

"How are the healer trainees progressing?" I asked, pausing near the supply room where voices drifted through the partially open door.

"Quite well. Kehlani Peterson shows particular promise, though she's been somewhat distracted lately."

Kehlani Peterson. The name struck me like recognition, though I couldn't place why. Through the doorway, I glimpsed a young woman organizing bandages, her chestnut brown hair catching the fluorescent light in waves that matched the strand I'd found on Augustus's shirt.

My breath caught, but I maintained my composure. "I'd like to speak with her about her training experience."

Dr. Collins nodded and called Kehlani over. The young woman approached with the eager stride of youth, but something flickered across her face when she saw me—not the respectful deference I typically received, but something calculating. Almost... triumphant?

"Luna Harper," she said, her voice pitched higher than necessary. "What an honor."

"I'm reviewing our training programs. How have your recent sessions with senior pack members been progressing?"

The question was innocuous enough, but Kehlani's reaction was immediate and telling. Color flooded her cheeks, and she glanced away before forcing eye contact. "Oh, they've been... very educational. Alpha Augustus has been particularly... hands-on with my development."

The way she said his name—with intimate familiarity rather than formal respect—sent ice through my veins. But I kept my expression neutral, even as every instinct screamed warnings.

"Has he now?" I murmured. "How fortunate for your advancement."

After Dr. Collins moved on to other duties, I found myself alone with Kehlani in the supply room. The space felt smaller suddenly, charged with unspoken tensions. I reached into my jacket pocket and withdrew the small envelope containing the chestnut hair.

"I found this on my mate's clothing," I said quietly, holding up the strand. "Any idea how it might have gotten there?"

Kehlani's eyes widened, and for a moment, genuine fear flickered across her features. "I... I have no idea, Luna. That could be from anyone."

But even as she denied it, her hand moved unconsciously to her own hair, twirling a strand between nervous fingers. The gesture was identical to the motion I'd observed countless times in pack meetings—a tell I'd catalogued without conscious thought.

"Could it?" I asked, my voice carrying the subtle authority that had made me an effective Luna for ten years.

Something shifted in Kehlani's demeanor then. The fear transformed into something bolder, more reckless. Perhaps she mistook my calm for weakness, or perhaps the secret she'd been carrying had grown too heavy to bear.

"Actually, Luna Harper," she said, straightening her shoulders with newfound confidence, "there's something you should know."

I activated my phone's voice recorder with practiced discretion, a habit from years of documenting important pack conversations. "Oh?"

"I'm pregnant," she announced, her hand moving to rest protectively over her still-flat stomach. "With Alpha Augustus's pup."

The words hung in the air like poison, but I didn't flinch. Instead, I watched her face, noting the pride mixed with defiance, the way she seemed to savor delivering this devastating news.

"He comes to me because I can give him what you never could," she continued, emboldened by my silence. "A future. An heir. He tells me about your... condition. How the rogue attack left you barren. How he stays with you out of duty, but his heart yearns for more."

Each word was calculated to wound, delivered with the cruelty only youth could muster. But I'd faced down territorial challenges and pack wars. I wouldn't crumble before a delusional girl's fantasies.

"He promises me things," Kehlani pressed on, her voice growing dreamy. "About our future together. About how I'll make a better Luna—young, fertile, devoted. He says the pack needs fresh blood, new energy. Someone who can give him the legacy he deserves."

I let her speak, documenting every word, every confession, every intimate detail she revealed about their meetings in his office, their plans, her certainty that Augustus would choose her over our decade-long bond.

"You must know it's over between you," she finished, her chin raised in challenge. "He may not have the courage to tell you yet, but his actions speak clearly enough. The Silvermoon Pack will have a new Luna soon."

I slipped my phone back into my pocket, the recording safely captured. When I finally spoke, my voice carried the deadly calm that had once made enemies retreat without a single blow.

"Thank you for your honesty, Kehlani. It's been... illuminating."

As I turned to leave, I caught her reflection in the supply room's mirror—flushed with victory, hand still protective over her stomach, already imagining herself in my place.

She had no idea what she'd just unleashed.
