My Mate Lied About Our Fated Bond Chapter 1

I told myself it was the scent that made me cry.

Not the Luna's quarters, not the view from the window, not the way the afternoon light came through the curtains in long gold strips and landed on the floor like something deliberate. Just the scent. Pine and cold earth and something deeper underneath — warm, almost sweet, the kind of smell that bypasses your brain entirely and goes straight to the part of you that is still animal, still instinct, still wolf.

Hayes's scent.

My wolf stirred the moment I crossed the threshold, a low hum in my chest that I had never felt before the King family's announcement. Before that day, I had spent years watching other she-wolves describe the mate pull — the way it felt like recognition, like coming home to a place you had never been. I had nodded along and kept my face neutral and told myself I was fine with waiting. That the Moon Goddess had her reasons.

Now I stood in the middle of the Luna's quarters with a single duffel bag at my feet and let myself believe she had finally answered.

I unpacked slowly. I didn't have much — an Omega family doesn't accumulate the kind of things that fill a room like this one. A few changes of clothes. A worn copy of pack law statutes I had read so many times the spine had given up. A photograph of Kason and me from three years ago, him making a face at the camera, me laughing at something just outside the frame. I set it on the nightstand and stood back and looked at it for a long moment.

"You'd hate this room," I said to his face in the photo. "Too many throw pillows."

He would have said something dry back. Something like, *at least you'll have something to throw when it goes sideways.* That was Kason — always one step ahead of the disaster, always making it funny so I wouldn't be afraid of it.

I wasn't afraid. Not yet.

I smoothed the bedspread with both hands, lined my shoes up by the door, and told my wolf to settle. She hummed and didn't argue. We were both, for the first time in a long time, cautiously, carefully hopeful.

---

The pack run was scheduled for late afternoon. I had finished unpacking early, so I decided to go down and find Hayes — surprise him, maybe, the way mates were supposed to do. The thought made me feel almost embarrassingly young. I was twenty-two years old and I was nervous about surprising my own mate.

I heard the gathering before I reached the main hall.

Not loud — nothing as obvious as a party. Just the particular murmur of high-rank wolves in a room together, the kind of sound that has a texture to it, a density. I slowed at the doorway.

Francesca Hart was sitting in the Luna's chair.

Not a chair near it. Not beside it. The Luna's chair — the high-backed one at the head of the long table, the one that had been pointed out to me two days ago by Sylvia King herself with a smile that I had taken for warmth. Francesca sat in it the way she had been sitting in it for years. Easy. Settled. Like the chair had been built around her.

She was surrounded by she-wolves I recognized by rank if not by name — Alpha-blooded, every one of them, the kind of women who wore their bloodline in the way they held their shoulders. They were laughing at something. Someone had brought wine. The afternoon light caught the glasses and threw small bright shapes across the table.

No one looked up when I appeared in the doorway.

Then Francesca did.

She didn't stop smiling. That was the thing I noticed first — the smile stayed exactly where it was, like it had been pinned there, while her eyes moved over me with the particular slowness of a wolf who wants you to know you are being assessed and found wanting.

"Oh," she said. The single syllable carried a whole conversation. "The Omega is here."

Not *Hailey*. Not *Hayes's mate*. Not even the courtesy of pretending she didn't know my name.

The Omega.

The she-wolves at the table glanced over. A few of them looked away immediately, the way you look away from something mildly embarrassing. None of them said anything. No one corrected her. No one offered me a seat or acknowledged the title that was supposed to be mine in this room.

My wolf went very still inside me. Not calm — still. The way an animal goes still when it is deciding.

"Francesca," I said. My voice came out even. I was proud of that. "I was looking for Hayes."

"He's with his father." She lifted her wine glass. "Pack business. You'll learn — the Alpha heir's time isn't really his own." A small pause, perfectly timed. "Or yours."

One of the she-wolves near her pressed her lips together. Not quite a smile. Not quite not one either.

I held Francesca's gaze for exactly one beat longer than was comfortable, then I turned and walked back down the hall.

---

I found Hayes in the east corridor, coming out of his father's study. He looked up when he saw me, and for just a moment — half a second, maybe less — something moved across his face that I couldn't name. Then it was gone, replaced by the easy, controlled expression I was still learning to read.

"Hey," he said. "I thought you were settling in."

"I was." I kept my voice quiet. "Francesca is in the main hall. Sitting in the Luna's chair. She called me 'the Omega' in front of half a dozen Alpha-blooded she-wolves and no one said a word."

Hayes went still.

It was the first time I saw it — that complete, unnerving stillness, like every system in him had paused to run a calculation. It lasted less than a second. Then he exhaled slowly and his expression settled back into something smooth and reasonable.

"Francesca's been close with this family for a long time," he said. "Alpha-blooded wolves have their own social dynamics. It's not personal."

"She sat in the Luna's chair, Hayes."

"She's comfortable here. That's all." He met my eyes, and his scent was — even. Controlled. Too controlled, something in me noted, though I didn't know yet what to do with that. "You're going to need to learn how things work at Silvercrest. It's a different world than what you're used to."

The words were gentle. Reasonable. The tone of a wolf explaining something obvious to someone who didn't quite understand yet.

I looked at him for a moment. My wolf made a sound low in my chest — not a growl, not quite. Something more like a question.

I swallowed it down.

"Okay," I said.

I chose to believe him. I was still, in those early days, very good at choosing to believe.

But my wolf remembered the scent of his stillness. And she did not let it go.
