Chapter 2

I slipped through the shadows of the Blackwood mansion, my heart still raw from Alexander's cruel words. The mate bond between us throbbed like an open wound, but a new emotion had taken root alongside the pain—determination.

My fingers clenched into fists, the silvery scars on my palms catching the moonlight filtering through the high windows. For eight years, I'd been nothing but a placeholder, a convenient healer bound to an Alpha who despised the very sight of me. No more.

The forbidden library lay in the east wing, its heavy oak doors normally guarded. Tonight, however, the pack warriors were busy with preparations for Victoria's celebration—her 'ascension' to Luna-to-be. The irony wasn't lost on me. While they decorated for the woman who would replace me, I would arm myself with knowledge.

I pressed my palm against the ancient wood, feeling the protective wards recognize my Luna status—temporary as it might be. The doors swung open silently, revealing shelves upon shelves of scrolls and leather-bound tomes that hadn't been touched in generations.

'Show me,' I whispered to the darkness. 'Show me what happens when an Alpha rejects his true mate.'

My wolf stirred within me, guiding my hands to a dusty corner where the oldest scrolls lay preserved in silver casings. These weren't meant for ordinary pack members—these contained the sacred laws of the Moon Goddess herself.

Hours passed as I pored over the ancient text, my fingers trembling as the truth revealed itself in faded ink and crumbling parchment.

'When an Alpha rejects a true mate, the Goddess withdraws her blessing. His power shall wane like the moon until nothing remains but the hollow shell of what once was. No pack shall follow a wolf who defies the sacred bond, for in breaking it, he breaks himself.'

The words burned into my mind. Alexander believed himself above these laws, dismissing them as superstition. But I knew better. I had felt the Goddess's presence when I healed him that night, when our souls had intertwined against his will.

I carefully returned the scrolls to their resting places and slipped out of the library, a cold calm settling over me. Let him reject me. Let him face the consequences of his arrogance.

The next morning, I made my way to the pack's infirmary. Delta Ryder had been injured during a border patrol—a deep gash that had festered despite conventional treatment. The perfect test.

'Luna,' he murmured respectfully as I entered, though we both knew the title was merely formality. Soon, it would belong to Victoria.

'Let me see,' I said softly, approaching his bedside.

I placed my hands over his wound, closing my eyes as I summoned the healing energy that had always flowed through my veins. But something was different now. Where before there had been a steady stream, now there was a torrent—raw power surging through me with an intensity that made my skin glow with silvery light.

Ryder gasped as his wound closed completely, not even a scar remaining. 'That's... that's impossible,' he whispered. 'It was infected to the bone.'

I stared at my hands in wonder. The Goddess was already compensating for my pain, strengthening me even as she prepared to weaken Alexander. A message, perhaps—that while he had chosen to discard me, she had not.

That afternoon, the pack buzzed with excitement as Alexander led a procession of dignitaries through the territory. I watched from my window as they crossed the border into Silvermoon Pack lands, where a newly constructed manor stood waiting.

Victoria walked at Alexander's side, her hand possessively looped through his arm, her smile radiant as she played the role of Luna-in-waiting. The sight should have crushed me, but instead, I felt oddly detached. Let them have their celebration. Let them believe their future was secure.

From my vantage point, I could see Alexander gesturing grandly at the lavish home he had commissioned for her—a palace fit for his chosen mate. The dignitaries nodded approvingly, raising glasses in toast to the couple's future.

None of them knew what I now did. None of them could see the invisible threads of fate beginning to unravel around Alexander Blackwood, the proud Alpha who believed himself immune to the Moon Goddess's judgment.

As I turned away from the window, my wolf whispered within me, her voice stronger than I'd ever heard it before.

*Let him reject us. We will rise from the ashes of his mistake.*
