Chapter 3

I moved through the servants' corridor like a ghost, my footsteps silent against the worn stone floor. The narrow passage allowed staff to navigate the sprawling Blackwood mansion unseen—fitting, as I'd been treated like an invisible servant despite my Luna title for eight years.

Voices drifted from around the corner, making me pause. I recognized Eleonora's sharp, aristocratic tone immediately.

"The preparations for Victoria's welcome ceremony must be perfect, Caleb. After years of enduring that... healer girl, Alexander deserves a proper Luna by his side."

"Of course, Former Luna," Beta Caleb replied, his voice hesitant. "Though I worry about the consequences of—"

"Consequences?" Eleonora's laugh was brittle. "Those are just old wolves' tales. My son is the most powerful Alpha in three territories. He won't suffer for discarding a mate who was never worthy of him."

"She's nothing more than a powerless substitute," Eleonora continued, her voice dripping with disdain. "The pack never accepted her anyway. Victoria will give the Blackwood line the strength and prestige it deserves."

I pressed my palm against the cold stone wall, steadying myself. My wolf growled deep within me, no longer whimpering in pain but burning with a new emotion—rage.

*Powerless substitute.* The words echoed in my mind, crystallizing my resolve. Let them believe that. Let them underestimate me while I prepared for what was coming.

I slipped away before they could discover me, the conversation fueling a fire that had begun to burn inside me since discovering Alexander's journal. No more tears. No more desperate hope that he would someday see me.

Hours later, I stood before the mirror in my chambers—our chambers, though Alexander rarely slept here. The formal dinner tonight would be my first public appearance since learning of his plans. The Luna necklace felt heavy around my neck, its silver crescent moon pendant a mockery of everything I'd endured.

I chose a simple gray dress that matched my mood, leaving my hair unbound. No elaborate styling, no attempt to impress. Let them see me as I truly was.

The great hall had been transformed for the occasion. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over tables adorned with white roses—Victoria's favorite, I'd learned. The room fell silent as I entered, whispers following in my wake.

I took my place at the high table, the empty chair beside me a familiar reminder of Alexander's absence. He would make an entrance, of course. The Alpha always did.

When he finally appeared, Victoria was on his arm. She wore a crimson dress that hugged her curves, her golden hair elaborately styled. The perfect picture of a Luna-to-be. Her eyes met mine briefly, not with triumph but with something almost like pity.

Alexander didn't acknowledge me as he took his seat—not at my side, but with Victoria between us. A collective gasp rippled through the hall at the blatant insult. Even Caleb looked uncomfortable, his gaze fixed on his plate.

"Brothers and sisters of the Blackwood Pack," Alexander's voice boomed across the hall, commanding attention. "Tonight, we celebrate new beginnings and honor those who truly deserve recognition."

His eyes swept over the assembled wolves, deliberately skipping past me. "For too long, our pack has been denied its rightful Luna. Tonight, that changes."

My heart hammered against my ribs as Alexander stood, his movement fluid and predatory. He turned to me, his expression cold and distant as he reached for the Luna necklace around my neck.

"This symbol of our pack's strength belongs to one who will wear it with pride and honor," he said, loud enough for every wolf to hear.

His fingers brushed my skin as he unclasped the necklace, the contact sending a jolt through our bond—a bond he was so eager to sever. I remained perfectly still, my face a mask of calm while my wolf howled inside me.

With theatrical flourish, Alexander turned to Victoria, who rose gracefully to her feet. The room watched in stunned silence as he draped the necklace over her shoulders, the silver crescent settling against her collarbone.

"The future Luna of the Blackwood Pack," he announced, his voice thick with satisfaction.

Across the table, Eleonora's face glowed with triumph, her eyes gleaming as she raised her glass in toast. "To Victoria, our true Luna!"

The pack members followed suit, though many glanced uneasily in my direction. They knew—all of them knew—that what they were witnessing violated the most sacred law of our kind.

I sat motionless, watching the celebration unfold around me. Let them have their moment. Let Alexander believe he had humiliated me, broken me.

Little did he know that with each passing second, as the Moon Goddess witnessed his betrayal, his power was already beginning to fade. And mine—mine was only growing stronger.

As the night wore on, I felt a strange sensation in my chest—not pain, but a loosening, as if the chains that had bound me to this man were beginning to crack. For the first time in eight years, I allowed myself to imagine a life beyond being Alexander Blackwood's rejected mate.

And in that moment, watching him fawn over Victoria while the pack celebrated, I made my decision. I would not fight this rejection. I would embrace it—and watch as the consequences of his arrogance destroyed everything he held dear.
