Chapter 4

The forest was silent. Too silent.

Lykos's wolf prowled under his skin, restless and furious. Aria was gone. Vanished into the shadows, into some cruel magic trap, and he could feel it-the faint, silver pulse of her borrowed life.

He could feel her heartbeat. Not just in his chest, but in the air, in the trees, in the earth itself. It was weak, flickering like a dying candle, but it was there. Alive.

Alive.

He surged forward, every sense honed. The forest bent around him in streaks of moonlight and shadow. Each tree was a blur. Each branch a threat-or a path. His claws tore the underbrush. His teeth grit as the pulse grew stronger, stronger... then dimmer.

She was moving. Somewhere ahead. Far ahead.

"Hold on, Aria," he growled through clenched teeth. "I will find you. I swear it."

The clearing where the cage had been was gone. The ground was scorched, twisted runes etched into the dirt, glowing faintly before fading to ash.

"Impossible," Lykos muttered. The Curse Keeper was no ordinary witch. She could erase the traces of her magic, vanish without a trace, and leave only fear behind.

He crouched low, sniffing the air. The pulse of Aria's life throbbed faintly-off to the east, toward the ancient forest border.

He ran.

Hours passed-or maybe minutes. Time had no meaning. His wolf guided him, pulling him along the path that Aria's borrowed soul faintly imprinted on the world.

Then he saw her-

A faint glow in the distance, soft and silver, like moonlight wrapped around a fragile form.

"Aria!" he shouted.

The glow responded-flickered, then surged weakly, as if she was trying to reach him.

He picked up speed, almost flying across the forest floor. Then the glow coalesced into a figure-kneeling in a shallow clearing, head bowed.

Aria.

She didn't look at him at first. Her hair hung in tangles, dirt and sweat plastered against her pale skin. She shook violently, like she was struggling against something invisible.

"Aria," he whispered.

She flinched, finally looking up. Her eyes were wide, uncomprehending, filled with both relief and terror.

"Lykos... I... I can't..." she stammered. "It's... it's leaving me. I feel it-my life... slipping..."

His wolf growled in rage, echoing in his chest. "I will not let them take you," he snarled.

He crouched low, moving carefully, instincts screaming at him that danger was near. The silver pulse around her flickered erratically.

Then he understood.

The borrowed life. Someone is feeding on it. Someone is pulling at her soul.

And if he moved too fast-if he touched her-she could die instantly.

Not from him. From the curse's twisted consequence.

"Aria," he whispered, "don't panic. Stay calm. I'm here. I will protect you."

"I can't," she whimpered. "I feel... everything leaving me. My memories... my dreams... everything..."

Lykos crouched beside her, careful not to touch her. His heart ached, seeing her so small, so fragile, so terrified.

"I know," he said, voice low and steady. "I know it's hard. But you're stronger than you think. You've survived worse already. And you'll survive this too."

A crackling sound made them both look up.

Branches snapped. Shadows moved in unnatural patterns.

And then the witch appeared-The Curse Keeper.

Her silver-tipped staff glowed, dark energy pulsing through it. Her eyes were fixed on Aria, a cruel smile twisting her lips.

"You are persistent, Untouchable Alpha," she hissed. "But even you cannot save what does not belong to you."

Lykos rose slowly, wolf muscles coiling beneath his skin. "Release her," he commanded. "Or I will tear you apart."

The witch's laugh was soft, cruel, echoing through the trees. "Oh, I don't think you understand. She is mine. Her borrowed life... her stolen soul... belongs to me. And soon, very soon, the Moon Well will awaken."

Aria shrank, pressing herself against a mossy boulder for support. "Moon Well?" she whispered.

Lykos's jaw tightened. He had heard the stories. He had heard whispers of the Moon Well-a source of power so ancient it could rewrite reality itself. And now it was being used to siphon her life, to manipulate her stolen soul, to twist fate.

"Who... who am I?" she asked, her voice breaking. "Why... why me?"

Lykos felt the weight of the question. He didn't have the full answer yet. But one truth was undeniable: she was his mate. His impossible, miraculous, untouchable mate.

And she was dying.

He moved closer, crouched, wolf snarling in his chest. He could feel the pulse of her borrowed life fading, flickering like a candle in the wind.

Not now.

Not like this.

"Stay with me, Aria. Focus on me. Don't think about the magic. Don't think about them. Just... breathe."

She closed her eyes, trembling. "I... I don't know if I can."

"You can," he said, softer now. "You will. Look at me. Focus on me. You are alive because of me, because fate wants you alive. And I will not let you die-not while I'm standing."

Her lips quivered, tears streaking her pale cheeks. "Lykos..."

And then a sudden, violent scream ripped through the air.

Lykos's wolf growled, low and dangerous. The forest seemed to vibrate. Shadows shifted. The trees themselves seemed to bend in pain.

Something was coming. Something fast. Something strong.

The silver glow surrounding Aria flared violently, burning brighter than ever before.

Lykos instinctively leapt in front of her, crouched, claws extended. "Stay behind me!" he commanded.

From the shadows, a massive figure emerged-Alpha Varun. His eyes glowed with a dangerous, cruel light. His wolf was nearly as large as Lykos's, his teeth bared, saliva dripping.

"You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?" Varun growled.

Lykos's claws dug into the earth. "Back off. I won't ask twice."

Varun laughed. "You cannot stop me. She is the key. The Moon Well will awaken. And you-Untouchable Alpha-you will only watch."

Aria cried out, clutching her chest. The silver glow pulsed violently, almost as if responding to Lykos's fear, his anger, his desperation.

He could see it now: her borrowed life was collapsing, fading faster than he could reach her.

"I... I can't... hold on..." she whimpered.

The wolf inside him surged, feral, untamed, ripping at the edges of reason. He had no choice. None.

He lunged forward, claws slicing the air, his roar tearing the night apart.

But the instant he reached her...

A searing blast of silver magic slammed into him.

He hit the ground, teeth grinding, ears ringing, vision blurring. Pain flared across his body-but he couldn't stop. Couldn't give up.

Aria's glow pulsed again. Weak. Fading. Almost gone.

"Hold on, Aria!" he growled, dragging himself forward, claws scraping against dirt and roots. "Don't you dare die on me!"

The Curse Keeper's voice echoed in the clearing. "The prophecy cannot be stopped. She belongs to fate, Alpha. And you... are powerless to save her."

Lykos's wolf surged. "No. Not fate. Not you. Not her."

He dove forward.

And the world shattered around them.
