Chapter 5

Lykos's world tilted.

The forest, the shadows, the Curse Keeper-all vanished in a blinding silver light that seared his vision.

He landed on cold stone, the air thick and metallic. Mist swirled around him, silver and glowing, pulsating with a rhythm that matched the faint pulse of Aria's borrowed life.

She was ahead of him, suspended in midair inside a sphere of translucent silver energy. Her small frame trembled, lips parted in silent scream. The glow around her pulsed in time with her weak heartbeat.

Lykos moved closer, wolf instincts screaming, claws digging into the strange, slick stone beneath him.

"Aria!" he roared, sprinting forward. "Hold on!"

But the moment he reached her, the sphere reacted. The glow intensified, bright enough to burn his eyes. The Moon Well's magic was alive, ancient, and furious.

"You cannot touch her here," the Curse Keeper's voice echoed through the realm. "If you do, you will destroy her. If you hesitate... she will fade from this world forever."

Lykos stopped. His claws trembled. His wolf growled deep in his chest, frustrated and wild.

Impossible.

The Curse Keeper stepped forward, staff raised, eyes blazing. "This is your only chance, Untouchable Alpha. Watch her die... or act. Choose wisely."

Lykos's gaze locked onto Aria. Her small hands flailed against the glowing sphere, silver light casting shadows across her pale, trembling face.

"You are mine," he growled. "I will not lose you. Not here. Not ever."

The sphere pulsed violently, throwing him back. He hit the stone hard, teeth gritting in pain, but he scrambled up, wolf surging forward.

The Curse Keeper laughed, a soft, cruel sound that echoed endlessly through the mist. "The Moon Well tests all who enter," she said. "Even you. Even your bond."

Lykos froze. His wolf hissed inside. Bond.

She was his mate. His impossible, fragile, alive mate. And the Moon Well recognized that bond. He could feel it. Every pulse of silver around her, every flicker of life, resonated with him.

He stepped closer, carefully, senses alert.

"You... you are alive because of me," he whispered to her. "You're alive because fate wants it, because... because I won't let them take you. Not now, not ever."

Aria's eyes fluttered open, weak but aware. She tried to speak, but no sound came out. Her body trembled, weak and unsteady, yet her eyes-those pale, stormy eyes-looked straight at him.

Then the world shifted.

The mist twisted, thickening into shapes-figures of wolves, shadows, twisted forms, all circling them. The Moon Well was testing him, pushing him, trying to pull him away.

"Your strength alone will not save her," the Curse Keeper's voice echoed. "Your emotions are fragile. Your bond is not enough."

Lykos's wolf snarled. "I don't care! I will fight! I will kill every shadow in this place if I have to! She is mine!"

And with that, the first wave of the Moon Well's trial hit.

Silver chains of light shot out from the mist, wrapping around him, heavy and constricting. They were not physical-he could feel them cutting into his mind, testing his focus, his will, his control over the wolf inside.

Aria's sphere pulsed violently in response, the light flickering.

"You are testing me," he growled, claws slashing through the invisible chains. They burned, ripped at his skin and spirit, but he didn't falter. He had to reach her.

The Curse Keeper's laughter echoed. "You will break, Alpha. And she will vanish."

Lykos ignored her. Focused on Aria. He could feel her heartbeat, faint, faltering. He could feel the pulse of her borrowed life, the thin thread of existence holding her soul together.

He lunged forward.

The Moon Well responded. The ground beneath him opened into a glowing pit of silver energy, pulling him down. Shadows twisted like serpents, coiling around his legs, trying to drag him away from her.

No! he roared, striking outward. Claws raked through the shadows, tearing the serpentine shapes apart. He reached the edge of the pit, every muscle screaming, every nerve on fire.

Aria's sphere floated higher, glowing brighter. The silver light illuminated runes etched into the stone floor-ancient, incomprehensible, vibrating with the Moon Well's power.

Her pulse flickered faster. The borrowed life draining from her.

Lykos realized something: the Moon Well wasn't just a test. It was a judge. It measured intent, emotion, loyalty... love. And it would punish him if it found his heart wanting.

"You must prove your bond... or lose her forever," the Curse Keeper whispered.

He growled, fury and fear coiling into one. "I... will... not fail!"

The shadows rose again, twisting, forming shapes of every fear he had ever had. Pack members dying. Aria fading. The Curse Keeper's laughter echoing across centuries.

He pressed forward, forcing himself to face every shadow. His wolf roared, his instincts sharp, his mind clear. He would not hesitate. He would not fail.

Finally, he reached the sphere.

Aria's trembling hands reached toward him. Her eyes shone with tears, but also with recognition.

"Lykos..." she whispered, voice cracking. "I... I remember... something..."

The sphere flared violently. Silver light shot outward, hitting him full in the chest. He didn't move. Didn't flinch.

"Your bond must be true... pure... unbreakable," the Curse Keeper's voice said, fading as the shadows dissolved. "Or she dies."

He looked into her eyes.

You are mine. And I am yours.

He reached toward her-careful, careful not to touch her yet, not risking the borrowed life, but close enough that the Moon Well could feel his intent, his love, his desperation.

"I will not let you die," he said, voice low, shaking with emotion. "I will fight fate itself. I will survive every curse, every enemy, every shadow... just to keep you alive. You are mine. And I am yours."

The sphere pulsed once. Twice. Then expanded, enveloping them both in silver light.

Aria gasped. Memories-faint, fragmented, chaotic-flooded her mind.

Voices. Faces. Dreams. A man she barely remembered, a stolen soul, the Moon Well calling her...

And then-

She screamed.

The glow around her flared violently. Silver energy shot out, spinning, forming a tunnel that stretched infinitely upward.

Lykos instinctively lunged, trying to hold her steady, but the sphere expanded, lifting both of them into the air. The Moon Well's magic was alive, pulling them both into its heart.

Aria clutched at him, trembling. "Lykos... I'm... I'm scared..."

"I know," he whispered. "I know... but I won't let you go. I promise."

The Mist thickened, the light blinding. His senses screamed. He could feel the Curse Keeper laughing somewhere, distant but sharp, dangerous.

And then, the world shifted again.

They were no longer floating. They were falling. Or rising. He couldn't tell. Time bent in strange, impossible ways.

And then, at the center of it all, he saw it-the Moon Well itself.

A massive, glowing pool of silver light, swirling with power older than the forest, older than any Alpha, older than the Curse Keeper herself. And at the center... a faint outline of a soul.

Aria's soul.

It shimmered, fractured, struggling against something invisible yet suffocating.

He felt the weight of it-her life, her stolen soul, every borrowed heartbeat-and he realized the truth:

If he didn't act now... she would be lost forever.

Lykos's claws flexed. Wolf roared. Heart thumped. Mind screamed.

"I will not fail you!" he shouted. "I will bring you back!"

And then, from the depths of the Moon Well, something answered.

A voice. Not human, not witch, not wolf-ancient, female, commanding.

"Alpha Lykos... your intentions will be tested. Your bond judged. Only if pure... will she survive."

The sphere holding Aria pulsed violently. Her face twisted in pain, but she looked at him with trust.

And then the impossible happened.

The sphere cracked. Silver shards flew outward. Her pulse-faint, fragile-began to flicker dangerously.

If the sphere breaks... she dies.

Lykos lunged, claws slicing through the silver shards. His wolf howled, echoing across the realm.

But the shards reformed-magic too strong, too ancient.

He had seconds. Seconds.

And then...

A shadow emerged from the Moon Well itself. Not the Curse Keeper. Not Varun. Something else.

Something older. Something alive. Something that could devour them both.

And it lunged.
