Chapter 5

Seven hundred miles away in Ironridge, the floorboards of the training ring splintered under heavy paws.

I didn't need to be there to picture it. Caleb told me everything two weeks before the Summit, standing in the cold shade of Wylder’s front porch.

Lukas and Delilah had tried to rehearse their mated combat exhibition three days in a row. It had fallen apart three days in a row. Lukas’s silver-grey wolf fought like an animal cornered by phantoms—reckless, snapping his jaws too early, lunging until his flanks heaved. Delilah’s copper wolf was built for speed, not blood. She couldn't absorb his kinetic back-draft. By the third pass, Lukas slammed into her ribs, sending her tumbling into the boundary fence.

When they shifted back, Delilah had spat gravel and screamed that he was running like a rogue instead of an Alpha. Lukas barked right back, veins corded in his neck, telling her she couldn't hold a defensive formation for thirty damn seconds.

Neither of them said my name. But Caleb saw the hollow at the center of their line.

"They blame each other," Caleb said, his voice as flat as gravel. "He keeps looking over his shoulder for the wolf that used to keep his flank closed. Delilah thinks she can out-train a severed foundation. She can't."

Caleb had watched me swallow ten years of Lukas’s cruelty. He had watched the Alpha tone press me into the floorboards; he had watched me eat Thanksgiving scraps over the sink while Lukas paraded Delilah around his family’s table. Caleb didn't apologize for doing nothing. He just handed me a ledger of their fractures.

"Thank you, Caleb," I said.

I didn't cry. The time for bleeding had passed. I put his words into a locked box in my chest and walked back out toward the pines.

In the final week, Wylder and I stopped using the mind-link for commands.

We met on the mossy rise above the river just before sunset. The evening air held the metallic sting of an early frost. We shifted together, our bones sliding into place without the old agonizing crackle of resistance. Seraphine emerged large, luminous, and absolute, her white coat reflecting the orange embers of the dying sun. Wylder’s Lycan wolf was a mountain of dark timber and black slate beside her.

He surged forward without a sound.

There was no *Turn now,* no *Left flank.*

Before Wylder’s shoulder dipped to hook my back leg, Seraphine pivoted on a hair. She anticipated the angle before the thought fully cleared his consciousness. We spun in a lethal, seamless counter-balance—paws thundering in absolute symmetry, the wet earth throwing up arcs of black soil. When he pivoted to block an imaginary strike, my front shoulder dropped into his blind spot, locking the defensive perimeter so tightly not a breath of wind could have slipped between our coats.

We halted, our breath smoking in the cold air.

Wylder shifted back. He stood naked to the waist in the chill, chest rising and falling, his gray eyes pinning me with a quiet, devastating stillness. He didn't offer a compliment. He didn't have to. The bond hummed in my jawline—taut, heavy, and unbreakable. It wasn't forming anymore. It was forged.

The night before the Summit, the Lycan pack house was dead quiet.

I stood by the upstairs window, looking out over the dark ridge. A breeze rattled the glass. Without thinking, my right hand rose to my neck, my fingertips brushing the pale skin just below my ear.

I stopped.

I blinked at my reflection in the dark pane.

I hadn't touched the mark in three days. For ten years, I had checked that spot every single hour, reading the temperature of Lukas’s bond like an approaching storm, waiting for the cold ice of his disgust to tell me I had failed him.

The reflex was dead. The skin was smooth. Seraphine slept beneath my ribs, warm as an open hearth.

I let my arm drop to my side, turned off the lamp, and slept without dreaming.

Across the valley, behind the competitor lodge doors where Lukas sat nursing a glass of bourbon in the dark, his wolf whimpered against his ribs. A thin, pathetic frequency that Delilah couldn't hear.

The morning of the Summit arrived under an iron sky.

The Lycan Council arena smelled of crushed stone, old cedar, and the sharp copper tang of shifting wolves. Hundreds of Alphas and their retinues filled the upper galleries, their combined auras pressing against the glass like a building wave.

Down in the lower corridor, Delilah Ross adjusted the scarlet silk of her trainer's tunic. Her hair was pulled back into a tight braid; the gold Luna circlet rested on her brow, though it sat crooked against the sweat dampening her temples.

"Just bringing water for the Ironridge suite," Delilah said, offering a tight, radiant smile to the arena staff attendant stationed near the heavy oak doors of the east wing.

The attendant nodded, distracted by the roar of the crowd upstairs. "East wing is down the hall. Watch your step, ma'am."

Delilah turned the corner into the dim corridor. She counted the doors. One. Two. Three.

*Lycan Prince Suite.*

She stopped. The hall was empty. She slipped inside the preparation alcove, her boots making no sound on the runner rug. On the low slate table sat a silver tray bearing two crystal carafes of spring water, set out for Wylder and his partner before the opening exhibition.

Delilah didn't hesitate. She rolled back the left cuff of her red sleeve.

A clear glass vial, no thicker than a matchstick, slid into her palm. She unstoppered the wax seal with her thumb, lifted the lid of the second carafe, and tipped the pale, odorless liquid directly into the water.

*Wolfsbane.*

She slid the empty vial back into the hem of her sleeve, wiped the rim of the glass with a clean handkerchief, and stepped back into the hallway with that same practiced, lovely smile fixed on her lips.
