Chapter 4

The digital PDF containing Noah’s name vanished from my tablet screen, replaced by a gray error box.

I tapped the display hard. File Not Found. Remote Administrator Revocation.

I dragged my finger across the glass, capturing a screenshot of the email header before the server scrubbed the metadata entirely. The subject line—Northstar Criminal Liability Allocation Plan—saved to my local photo reel. But the ten-page text outlining my son’s impending prison sentence was gone.

"Did you get the download?" Maya Rossi asked, leaning over the edge of the twin bed.

"Adrian's IT department ran a remote wipe on my inbox," I told her, dropping the tablet onto the quilted mattress. "I secured the header. The actual liability plan is wiped."

Three hours after leaving my penthouse, I sat in Maya’s Brooklyn guest room, staring at a blank mobile carrier registration page on my laptop.

"Just put my number down for the secondary contact," Maya said, tossing a tiny, plastic-wrapped SIM card onto the desk.

I typed her digits into the mandatory field. A bitter laugh escaped my throat. "Twenty-two years of marriage, and I do not exist on paper."

"What do you mean?" Maya asked, crossing her arms.

"Adrian registered the family cellular plan under his Social Security number when we first combined our household accounts," I explained, staring at the flashing cursor. "He holds the master account for the streaming services, the toll transponders, the emergency contact registry for the security gate. I paid the invoices from my terminal every month, but I never actually owned the accounts."

Maya shook her head, her dark curls shifting around her shoulders. "He isolated you."

"I isolated myself," I corrected, sliding the new SIM card into the side of my phone. "I treated my marriage like a subsidiary branch. I managed the operations and let him hold the title."

"So we burn his title down," Maya suggested, pulling out her own phone. "I have a contact at the Journal. We give them the email header. We tell the press Adrian is framing his own son for the forty-two million dollar deficit."

"No," I said instantly. "Do not call the reporters."

"Claire, he forged your signature on a divorce petition today."

"If we leak a fragmented email header without the full text, the SEC will panic," I said, standing up from the desk. "They will launch a blind investigation. Noah’s signature is on the original indemnity agreement. The federal prosecutors will look at him first."

"He voted to fire you," Maya reminded me, her voice sharpening.

"He is twenty-four and terrified," I replied. "I will not trigger a federal indictment against my son for a PR victory. We do this legally. Draft the formal special audit demand."

Maya sighed, walking over to her laptop. "I am freezing the Northstar IPO materials. The board will have to halt the public offering until the audit clears."

"Send it directly to the corporate secretary," I instructed.

My newly activated phone vibrated against the wood. An unsaved number flashed on the screen, but I recognized the 212 area code. The penthouse landline.

I swiped the green icon to accept the video call.

Adrian’s face filled the screen. He wore a fresh tailored suit, his tie perfectly knotted.

Behind his left shoulder, the background told a different story. Vanessa stood in the center of my living room, pointing a manicured finger at the marble mantle. A uniformed maid nervously lifted the silver picture frame holding Noah’s high school graduation photo, shifting it to the far corner to make room for a modern glass vase.

"You need to call Marcus Miller at the bank right now," Adrian demanded, skipping any greeting. "He is refusing to override the forty-eight-hour hold on your guarantor withdrawal."

"That is federal banking regulation, Adrian," I said, watching Vanessa adjust the vase. "I cannot change the law."

"You are acting like a hysterical child," Adrian snapped, his jaw tight. "You are tanking this company over a bruised ego. Come back to the office tomorrow. Tell Marcus the withdrawal was an error."

"Did you finish moving my clothes out of the master suite?" I asked.

Adrian blinked, thrown off by the pivot. He glanced over his shoulder, noticing Vanessa in the frame, and slightly adjusted his phone to block her from view.

"We can handle this quietly," Adrian insisted, lowering his voice into a patronizing register. "Sign the divorce settlement and the negligence admission. If you cooperate, I will make sure you keep your visitation access. You can still maintain your place as Noah’s mother."

"My place as his mother is not a corporate perk you can revoke," I told him.

"Claire, if the credit line freezes on Wednesday, the entire Northstar deal collapses!"

"Then you better find a new guarantor," I said. "Ask your new COO to mortgage her pearl earrings."

I tapped the red button, cutting the feed.

The room fell silent, save for the hum of Maya’s radiator.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the heavy brass key Maya had given me twenty minutes ago. I traced the grooved metal with my thumb. It was a simple object. It did not open a penthouse or a boardroom.

But for the first time in two decades, I held a key to a door that required absolutely nothing from me in return. I dropped it into the zipper compartment of my leather wallet.

"The audit demand is drafted," Maya announced, hitting the return key on her keyboard. "I just submitted it through the executive portal. The system requires a mandatory board response within twenty-four hours."

A sharp, high-pitched ping echoed from her laptop speakers less than three seconds later.

Maya frowned, leaning closer to the screen. "That is impossible."

"What is it?" I asked, walking over to her side.

"The portal just bounced the request back," she said, her fingers flying across the trackpad. "Status changed to rejected. They overrode the twenty-four-hour review period."

She clicked the attached PDF and expanded the document.

The rejection letter bore the official Blackwell Bennett Capital letterhead. A single paragraph cited a lack of credible evidence for an external audit.

At the bottom of the page sat three digital authorization signatures.

The first was Adrian’s.

The second was Vanessa’s.

The third, stamped right above the final approval line, was Noah’s.
