Chapter 1

The bond snapped at 9:02 on a Thursday night, the exact second Brantley opened his mouth.

"I, Brantley, Alpha of Ashwood Pack, reject you, Fallon, as my mate and Luna."

He said it clearly. Every syllable was flat and cold, meant to carry across the raised stone dais to the three hundred pack members standing below.

Beneath my collarbone, the fresh mate mark turned from fire to ice. It didn't just hurt; it went hollow, like a heavy iron door slamming shut in an empty room. Deep in my ribs, my wolf let out one jagged, sheared cry, collapsed, and went utterly dead silent.

My knees hit the stone. The impact sent a shock up my spine, but I didn't make a sound. I didn't beg. I didn't ask *why*.

I could already smell her on his skin. Layered under his cedar scent was Lana’s sickly-sweet almond perfume and the sharp tang of a fresh pregnancy. Brantley didn't spare me a second glance. He stepped right over my shadow, reached the bottom of the dais, and took Lana’s arm. She pressed herself against his ribs, smiling down at her flat stomach, wearing my late mother’s carved silver hair comb in her pinned curls.

Three hours later, the front door of my cottage splintered open.

Two of Brantley’s enforcers marched into my mother’s herb room. They didn't speak. They pulled down the glass jars of dried wolfsbane, the bundles of mountain valerian, and the vials of distilled fever root—every ounce of the medicinal stock my mother spent thirty years building. They swept it all into wooden crates to stock Lana's personal clinic.

Then Cole, Brantley's lead warrior, shoved a wailing bundle into my chest.

"Alpha's orders," Cole barked. "Lana's sick. The pup has a fever. You nurse it until morning, clean the rags, and stay put. You're pack nursemaid now, Omega."

They walked out, slamming the cracked door behind them.

I stood in the cold draft of the stripped house. The baby shrieked, red-faced and burning with a chest rattle.

Brantley had planned this from the start. He never wanted a Luna. He wanted a broken, bonded ghost to raise his brother’s widow's bastard for free while he played master of Ashwood.

I looked down at the screaming child. My wolf was a cold stone in my chest, but my hands were completely steady.

I didn't light the stove. I wrapped the infant in a thick wool blanket, tucked him against my chest, and walked out the door into the predawn black.

I didn't head for the pack dens. I walked two miles down the highway to the regional Council hall, where pack jurisdiction ended and wolf law began.

The hall was gray, quiet, and smelling of old paper. Elder Maren sat behind the brass intake wicket, her sharp gray eyes watching me through thin wire spectacles as I walked in.

"State your business," Maren said.

I set the bundle gently on the intake counter.

"I am invoking Pack Law, Section Twelve: Child Abandonment and Coerced Labor," I said. My voice was calm, cutting through the quiet room. "Alpha Brantley formally rejected me on the platform at nine tonight. At midnight, his guards stole my mother's apothecary stores and dumped his dependent infant in my quarters without guardianship papers."

Maren stared at me. Then she pulled an iron stamp from her drawer and slid a thick docket across the wood.

"Sign the surrender," she said.

I picked up the pen. My fingers didn't shake. I signed my name, documented the stolen jars of wolfsbane ounce by ounce, and pushed the paperwork back.

Maren brought the red-inked stamp down with a heavy, echoing *crack*. She slipped the docket into a red folder, pulled a brass seal, and marked it with Brantley's name.

"A formal criminal warrant for Alpha Brantley," Maren murmured, her eyes holding mine. "Filed. Active. It sits in our records until he answers to the Council tribunal. Ashwood Pack will exile you for this, girl. You know that."

"They won't get the chance," I said.

I walked out into the freezing blue mist of dawn.

Half a mile down the ridge, I reached the boundary stones marking the edge of Ashwood territory. One step over the mossy granite, and the faint, residual hum of the pack bond cut out completely.

I was wolfless. I had no pack, no title, and not a single jar of my mother's herbs left to my name.

Yet deep down in my ribs, beneath the dead frost of the rejection, something shifted. It wasn't my dormant wolf. It was something heavier, vast and silver, turning once like a massive wheel in the dark before settling again.

I stopped at the tree line and looked down the valley one last time.

Down in the clearing, Brantley’s black truck had just skidded to a halt outside my empty cottage. Lana hopped out of the passenger side, holding a pair of heavy iron Omega collars, laughing as Brantley kicked open the front door to claim his new servant.
