Chapter 2

The scent of pine needles and damp earth was the same, but I was not.

Five years had passed since I walked across the boundary stones in the freezing blue mist of dawn, leaving Ashwood behind. I had returned quietly, wearing an ordinary wool coat and sturdy boots, blending easily into the rural valley that bordered my old pack’s lands.

Beneath my skin, the potent herbal suppressants hummed, masking the rich, crackling ozone of my Lycan-royal heritage. To anyone passing by, I smelled like nothing at all—a quiet, harmless human, or perhaps an unremarkable Omega.

I was here on official business to oversee the initial groundwork for the Lycan-funded development alliance. It was an ambitious diplomatic pact Royal had designed to channel Crownfang wealth and agricultural resources into the struggling regional packs. He had offered to send a dozen royal delegates in my place, but I had refused. I needed to stand on this soil with my head high.

"Mama, look at the honey cakes," Sutton piped up, tugging my sleeve.

She was five years old, bright-eyed, and clutching a carved wooden bird. Beneath her small collar, her pulse gave off that distinct Crownfang scent—warm cedar, winter mint, and the deep, sovereign spice of the Lycan line. I had memorized every nuance of it like pack borders.

*I feel you,* a low, deep voice brushed through the mate bond in my head.

It wasn't a commanding shout. Royal never used his Alpha authority on me. His presence arrived as a steady pulse of golden warmth, wrapping around my chest like a heavy blanket. *Steady, my heart,* he murmured from miles away at the royal stronghold. *I’m right here.*

Without thinking, my fingers drifted to the hollow of my neck, grazing the raised skin where his permanent royal mark rested under my high collar. My compass.

"We can get a cake, sweet girl," I said softly, crouching to wipe a smudge of powdered sugar from her cheek. "Just stay close to me."

We moved toward the open-air market in the center of the trading post. The stalls were lined with winter preserves, dried herbs, and woven blankets. It was peaceful until the sharp smell of burnt cedar and bitter almond cut through the cold air.

My spine went rigid.

Across the gravel path, stepping out of a newly detailed luxury truck, was Brantley.

He hadn't changed, only grown thicker around the jaw and louder in his stride. He wore a heavy leather coat embroidered with the Ashwood crest, and clinging to his arm was Lana, draped in cheap fox fur and wearing that same smug, practiced pout. They were laughing with two local pack delegates, practically shouting about the minor pack merger Brantley had just brokered with a neighboring territory.

"Ashwood expands again," Brantley boomed, his voice carrying over the crowd, hungry for an audience. "We’re absorbing their southern timber line by spring. That’s how a real Alpha negotiates."

I stood still, keeping Sutton shielded behind my hip.

Then Brantley turned. His gaze swept carelessly over the shoppers, hitched, and dragged back to me.

At first, his eyes held only mild confusion. I wasn't the gaunt, shivering girl he had humiliated on the raised stone dais. My posture was straight, my coat tailored and clean, my face calm. But then the faint trace of my natural scent beneath the suppressants reached him, and his pupils dilated in shock.

"Fallon?" he breathed.

His eyes flicked instantly from my face down to Sutton, who was clinging to my coat. I watched the gears grind behind his arrogant eyes. He saw a five-year-old child. He saw me, supposedly wolfless, standing in our old territory. In a single second, the entire delusional narrative assembled itself in his mind.

*She kept the bastard. She’s been scraping by as a broken, starving Omega in the woods, pining after me.*

A sickening, familiar grin spread across his face.

Lana noticed his shift in focus. She glanced over, her face tightening with instant hostility when she spotted me. But Brantley didn't care about her. He muttered something to her, brushed her hand off his arm, and began striding straight toward me. Lana scurried off toward a side stall, deliberately waving a colorful ribbon to catch Sutton's eye.

"Pretty bird," Lana called out, her voice dripping fake sweetness as she lured my daughter toward a wooden toy cart a few feet away. "Come see this one, little girl."

"Sutton, stay," I commanded quietly, but Brantley stepped between us, cutting off my path.

He didn't speak right away. He reached out, grabbed my upper arm, and yanked me into the shadowed alley between two grain stalls.

"Well, look what crawled home," Brantley murmured, his breath hot against my face.

He didn't just stand there; he pushed. He flared his Ashwood Alpha aura—a suffocating, heavy pressure meant to force normal wolves onto their knees, to make Omegas shake and bare their throats in instinctive terror. The air in the alley turned thick and suffocating.

"**Kneel,**" he growled, dropping his voice into the full, resonant force of his Alpha tone.

The command hit me, but it didn't find purchase. It slid off my suppressed Lycan-royal aura like dirty water rolling off polished stone. I didn't drop. My knees didn't even bend. I stood entirely upright, staring right into his bloodshot eyes.

Brantley blinked, momentarily thrown that his command hadn't dropped me to the dirt. Then his grin returned, uglier this time.

"Still stubborn," he sneered, stepping closer until his chest almost pressed against mine. He leaned down, his eyes raking over my mouth. "I see you kept the brat. Raising another woman's pup all these years... you must have missed me terribly, Fallon. Look at you. Wolfless, pathetic, wandering around my borders like a stray."

He raised a leather-gloved hand toward my chin.

"You spent five years regretting that night, didn't you? It's fine. I’m feeling generous today. The rejection was just pack business, Fallon. We can still finish what we started. You come back to my den tonight, clean up, and serve under my roof. A real Alpha can always find use for an old mate."

The sheer audacity of his words hung in the frigid alley air. He actually believed I had spent half a decade weeping for his scraps.

I didn't slap his hand away. I simply turned my head, letting his fingers graze empty air, and looked at him with flat, merciless clarity.

"Don't touch me, Brantley," I said. My voice was quiet, even, and entirely devoid of fear. "And don't flatter yourself."

His eyebrows drew together in an angry knot. "What did you say?"

"I am marked by another," I said, every word crisp and cold as iron. "And you are standing in my way."

I didn't move. I simply waited.
