Chapter 2

I found him in our private quarters, standing by the window with his back to me. The afternoon light caught the line of his shoulders — broad, unhurried, the posture of a man who had not spent the last hour falling apart in a hallway.

"Shepard."

He turned. And for just a moment, something moved across his face — not guilt, exactly. More like the brief recalibration of someone deciding which version of himself to present.

"Lena." His voice was even. "You look tired."

"I saw them," I said. "The boxes. The display board. My father's recipes with a logo I've never seen, being pitched to distribution contacts in the human market." I kept my voice steady. I had practiced this in the hallway, in the elevator, all the way up. "I need you to explain that to me."

He exhaled — not a sigh, something more controlled than that — and turned fully toward me. And then I felt it. That low, resonant pressure settling into the base of my skull, behind my sternum, in the soft place behind my knees. His Alpha tone. Not raised. Never raised. Just present, like a hand pressed gently but firmly against my chest.

"You're upset," he said. "I understand that. But I need you to hear me clearly — what we're doing with the launch is modernization. It's growth. You've always struggled with change, Lena. You know that about yourself."

I knew what he was doing. I could feel the shape of it even as it worked on me — the way the tone made my own certainty feel unstable, like ground that might not hold. I pressed my thumbnail into my palm. Hard. A small, private anchor.

"Those recipes belong to my family," I said. "They were given to this pack under the Moon Goddess's blessing. They were not yours to rebrand."

"Everything in this pack is mine to steward." Still calm. Still that low, even pressure. "That's what Alpha means. You've always known that."

The door opened behind him.

Whitney walked in like she belonged there. Like she had always belonged there. She was wearing something pale and fitted, and at her throat — catching the light with every movement — was a diamond necklace. Not subtle. Not small. The kind of thing that was meant to be seen.

"Oh." She stopped, her eyes moving between us with an expression of practiced sympathy. "I didn't realize you two were—"

"It's fine," Shepard said. To her. Not to me.

Whitney's hand drifted to the necklace. A small gesture. Possibly unconscious. I didn't believe for a second that it was unconscious.

"Shepard gave me this after the distribution meeting," she said, her voice soft, almost wondering. "He said it was to mark the beginning of something real. A soul connection, he called it." She looked at me then, and her expression was so carefully kind that it turned my stomach. "I'm sorry you're finding this difficult, Lena. I truly am."

I didn't answer her. There was nothing to say that the room would let me say.

I left.

---

The fever came that night.

It started as a chill I couldn't shake, then a heaviness behind my eyes, then the particular misery of a body that has been holding too much for too long and has simply decided to stop. I made it to the bed. I pulled the blanket up. I waited for the sound of the door.

It didn't come.

By the next morning I was burning. I could hear the Pack House below me — voices, movement, the particular energy of something being prepared. I lay there and listened and tried to understand what I was hearing.

Dara found me around noon. Shepard's sister, her face doing something complicated when she saw me — the blanket, the untouched glass of water on the nightstand, the way I was lying very still because moving made the room tilt.

"Lena," she said quietly. "You're sick."

"I know."

She stood in the doorway for a long moment. I watched her work through something — I could see it, the conflict moving across her face like weather. Then she looked away.

"There's a party tonight," she said. "For Whitney's birthday."

I closed my eyes.

I heard it anyway. Hours later, through the floor — music, laughter, the particular sound of a crowd that is genuinely enjoying itself. And at some point, a swell of applause, and Shepard's voice carrying up through the ceiling, warm and delighted in a way I had not heard in longer than I could name.

Someone told me later about the cake. Five tiers. Custom-designed. The kind of thing you commission weeks in advance because you want someone to know, without any ambiguity, that you were thinking about them.

I lay in the dark and I waited for the grief to come.

It didn't. What came instead was something quieter and more final — a stillness, like a door closing softly in a room I had been standing in for years.

I stopped crying. I'm not sure exactly when. I just noticed, at some point, that my face was dry.

I reached under the mattress — the old hiding place, the one I'd had since I was a girl — and I pulled out the folded paper. My father's handwriting. His favorite recipe, the one I had never shared, the one that was only ever mine.

I held it in both hands in the dark.

And I began to think.
