Chapter 3

I waited until the Pack House went quiet.

Not the middle-of-the-night quiet, when even the walls seemed to hold their breath — just the particular lull of late afternoon, when the Deltas had finished their rounds and the hallways emptied out between shifts. I sat on the edge of the bed with my father's folded recipe in my lap and I opened the mind-link the way you open a door you're not sure is still unlocked.

Martin.

A pause. Then, steady as I remembered it: Luna.

Not Lena. Luna. He had always called me that, even in the years when Shepard had stopped.

I need to see you, I said. Not here. Outside the territory line. The old trail by the eastern ridge.

Another pause, shorter this time. I'll be there.

I closed the link and sat very still for a moment. My hands weren't shaking. I noticed that. A week ago they would have been.

---

The eastern ridge trail was overgrown in the way that paths get when no one uses them officially anymore — the pack had rerouted its patrol lines two years back, and the old trail had been quietly forgotten. My father used to walk it with me when I was small. He said it was good to know the edges of the things you belonged to.

Martin was already there when I arrived. He was standing with his back to the tree line, hands at his sides, and when he turned and saw me his expression did something I hadn't expected. It tightened. Not with surprise. With something older than that.

"You look like you haven't slept," he said.

"I haven't. Not really."

He nodded once, like that confirmed something he'd already known. Martin Rivera had served under my father for eleven years. He was not a man who performed concern — when it showed on his face, it was because it was already in his chest.

"Tell me," he said.

So I did. All of it. The display board. The white boxes with the sans-serif font. The distribution contacts. The diamond necklace. The birthday cake with five tiers while I lay burning in the dark upstairs. I kept my voice even. I had learned, somewhere in the last few days, that evenness was a form of precision — that if I let the grief into my voice it would take up all the space and there would be no room left for the facts.

Martin listened without interrupting. When I finished, the silence between us had a particular quality — not empty, but full. The way a room feels after someone has finally said the thing everyone was already thinking.

"He used your father's recipes," Martin said. Not a question.

"Repackaged them. Rebranded them. Pitched them to human market distributors as his own creative work."

Something moved across Martin's face then — not anger, exactly. Anger would have been easier to look at. This was quieter and more absolute, the expression of a man who has just watched a line get crossed that cannot be uncrossed.

"Your father trusted this pack with those recipes," he said. "He trusted the Alpha."

"I know."

"Then we're going to get them back."

He said it the way my father used to say things — not as a declaration, just as a fact that had already been decided. I felt something loosen in my chest. Not relief, exactly. More like the particular sensation of not being alone in a weight you've been carrying by yourself for too long.

We talked for almost two hours on that overgrown trail. Martin had Beta clearance — access to pack financial records, procurement logs, the administrative paper trail of everything Shepard had authorized in the last eighteen months. He had already been watching. He told me that quietly, without apology, and I understood what it cost him to admit he had seen it coming before I had.

"I was waiting for you to ask," he said.

"I know," I said. "I'm asking now."

He pulled out his phone and showed me the first set of records — procurement invoices for packaging materials, distribution agreements, licensing filings. All dated. All traceable. All signed under Shepard's name with no mention of the Meyer family, the Pack Heritage Council, or the Moon Goddess's blessing that had protected those recipes for a hundred years.

I pulled out the folder I'd brought. Original recipe drafts in my father's handwriting. Ancestral notes with dates going back four generations. Photographs of the collection as it had existed before Shepard touched it. The provenance was undeniable. The theft was documented.

We spread it all out on a flat rock at the edge of the trail, the afternoon light coming through the trees in long, slanted lines, and we began to build the case.

My hands still weren't shaking.

By the time we finished, the light had shifted to gold and the shadows had grown long. Martin gathered the documents carefully, the way he had always handled things that mattered.

"This is enough to take to the Heritage Council," he said.

"Not yet," I said. "I want it to be more than enough."

He looked at me for a moment. Then he nodded.

"Your father would be proud of you," he said.

I didn't answer. I folded the papers back into the folder and held it against my chest and looked out at the edge of the territory — the line where the pack's land ended and the rest of the world began.

I was starting to understand that those two things were not as far apart as I had always believed.
