Chapter 2

I filed the bond-dissolution petition with the Lycan Council registry at 9:47 a.m. on January 2nd. The form was three pages. I filled it out in twelve minutes. Grounds for dissolution: material deception through the mate bond, infidelity with intent to replace, and—I hesitated over this line, then wrote it anyway—fraudulent representation of pack leadership.

The registry clerk, a middle-aged wolf with tired eyes, looked at the Ironveil Pack seal on my documentation and then at me. She didn't say anything. She stamped the filing, handed me a receipt, and told me the Council would contact me within seventy-two hours to schedule a preliminary inquiry.

I thanked her and left.

I didn't know Hudson would find out before I got back to Ironveil. I should have known. The Lycan Council registry isn't confidential—any Alpha can request notification if a Luna from their pack initiates dissolution proceedings. It's a courtesy system. A way to prevent ambush.

Hudson got the notification at 11:15 a.m., according to the timestamp on the message Ronan forwarded me later.

I was still driving when my phone started ringing. Hudson's name lit up the screen. I let it go to voicemail. He called again. And again. On the fourth attempt, I pulled over and answered.

"You filed," he said. His voice was tight. Controlled in the way that meant he was barely holding on.

"Yes," I said.

"You can't do this."

"I already did."

There was a pause. I heard him breathing on the other end, hard and uneven.

"The Council inquiry will surface everything," he said finally. "Every negotiation. Every alliance. Every decision you made without consulting me."

I went very still.

"What decisions?" I asked softly.

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Silverfang," Hudson said. "You pushed aggressive terms on that alliance. You overrode my judgment. Aldric Crane nearly declared war because of your arrogance."

I stared at the steering wheel. My hands were at ten and two, exactly where they were supposed to be.

"I wasn't assigned to the Silverfang negotiation," I said. "Aspyn was."

"That's not what the file says."

My wolf went silent inside me. Not the cold silence from the bond breaking. A different kind. The kind that comes right before something snaps.

"What file?" I asked.

Hudson didn't answer. The line went dead.

I sat in the car for three full minutes, my hands still on the wheel, staring at nothing. Then I put the car in drive and headed back to Ironveil.

---

I didn't go to the pack house. I went to the records room first.

The alliance files were kept in a locked cabinet that only three people had keys to: me, Hudson, and Ronan. I unlocked it and pulled the Silverfang folder.

The negotiation assignment memo was on top. Dated November 18th. Signed by Hudson.

It said: *Luna Hallie Mercer will serve as primary negotiator for the Silverfang territorial alliance. Terms to be finalized by December 10th.*

I read it twice. Then I pulled out my phone and opened my personal archive—the backup copies I kept of every piece of pack business that crossed my desk.

I found the original memo. Same date. Different text.

*Aspyn Calloway will serve as primary negotiator for the Silverfang territorial alliance, under the supervision of Luna Hallie Mercer. Terms to be finalized by December 10th.*

I took a photo of both documents, side by side.

Then I kept digging.

The meeting notes from the December 8th negotiation session had been altered. Aspyn's name, which had appeared six times in the original transcript, was now replaced with mine. A new internal memo—one I had never written—was inserted into the file, dated December 5th, citing "Luna Mercer's directive to pursue aggressive territorial terms."

My handwriting. My signature. Forged.

I stood in the records room with the folder open on the table in front of me, staring at the evidence of something I hadn't fully understood until this moment.

Hudson wasn't just rejecting me. He was erasing me. And then rebuilding me as the villain in a story that would justify everything he'd done.

I heard footsteps in the hallway outside. Ronan's voice, low and clipped, speaking to someone I couldn't see.

"...distributed to the senior wolves this afternoon. He wants everyone briefed before the assembly."

A second voice, younger. One of the Deltas. "What if she contests it?"

"She won't have standing," Ronan said. "The file is comprehensive. The Alpha's directive is clear."

The footsteps faded.

I closed the folder very carefully, as if it were something fragile, and slid it back into the cabinet. Then I locked it.

I didn't go to Hudson. I didn't confront Ronan. I walked out of the records room, got back in my car, and drove to the one person in Ironveil who had never lied to me.

---

Declan lived in a cabin on the eastern edge of pack territory, close to the training grounds. I knocked once. He opened the door, took one look at my face, and stepped aside to let me in.

"He's framing me," I said.

Declan didn't ask who. He closed the door and gestured toward the kitchen table.

I sat. He poured two mugs of coffee and set one in front of me without asking if I wanted it. Then he sat across from me and waited.

I told him everything. The bond-dissolution filing. The altered documents. The fabricated memo. The meeting notes with my name where Aspyn's should have been.

Declan listened without interrupting. When I finished, he was quiet for a long moment.

"He's calling a pack assembly," Declan said finally.

I looked up sharply. "When?"

"Tomorrow night. Full attendance mandatory." Declan's jaw tightened. "Ronan briefed the ranked wolves this afternoon. The file you just described—it's already in their hands."

My coffee went cold between my palms.

"What's the assembly for?" I asked, even though I already knew.

Declan met my eyes. His expression was unreadable.

"Formal Luna removal," he said quietly. "On grounds of dereliction of duty."

I set the mug down very carefully. My hands didn't shake.

"He's going to reject me," I said. "In front of the entire pack."

Declan didn't deny it. He just looked at me with something that might have been regret, or respect, or both.

"What are you going to do?" he asked.

I stood. Picked up my keys. Looked at the Gamma who had served Ironveil for fifteen years and never once lied about what he saw.

"I'm going to let him," I said.

Declan frowned. "Hallie—"

"And then I'm going to bury him," I finished.

I walked out before he could respond.
