After My Mate Replaced Me at Our Mating Ceremony

The bond snapped at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, right as Julian approached through ceremonial smoke with another she-wolf's scent clinging to him. After fifteen years of serving his rise, she stood with her neck bared—only to realize she'd been swapped out at the altar. Now, with the mating bond destroyed and her future hanging in the balance, she must discover who she is without the wolf who defined her.

Chapter 3

The morning came cold and sharp. I woke before dawn, my neck still throbbing where the severed bond sat like a frozen scar. Selene stirred restlessly inside me, her presence both comfort and torment.

*"He is close,"* she murmured. *"Our mate is near."*

I shoved the thought away and dressed quickly. When I stepped out of the tiny bedroom, Kendrick was already at the cabin table. Documents spread across the surface like a battle map. Territorial records. Financial ledgers. Pack law precedents stacked in careful piles.

He looked up when I entered. His eyes were amber in the dim light, steady and unreadable.

"Coffee's on the stove," he said simply.

I poured myself a cup and joined him at the table. The storm-rain and iron scent of him hit me immediately, sharp and electric. My silver-pine and moonflower rose to meet it without my permission. The air between us pulled taut.

I gripped my coffee cup harder and focused on the documents.

"We need to establish a clear timeline," I said. "Julian's first illegal transfer happened three years ago. If we can trace the pattern—"

"Here." Kendrick slid a Lycan Crown territorial map toward me. His fingers brushed mine as he passed it.

The contact sent a jolt straight through my chest. I jerked my hand back. He didn't react. Just tapped a section of the map marked in red ink.

"These are the disputed borders," he said. "Cross-reference them with the financial records. Every time Julian siphoned resources, he filed false alliance paperwork to cover it."

I pulled the ledgers closer and started annotating. Pack law had strict protocols for territorial transfers. Julian had violated every single one. I made notes in the margins, citing specific statutes, building the legal framework piece by piece.

Kendrick worked across from me, his movements precise and deliberate. He didn't speak unless necessary. Didn't hover. Didn't try to take over. He simply worked alongside me, an equal partner in this quiet, methodical dismantling of Julian's empire.

It was devastating.

Not the work itself. The way he respected the space between us. The way he never once used his Lycan Prince authority to override my decisions. The way he set a fresh cup of coffee beside my hand when mine went cold, without interrupting my concentration.

I caught myself leaning toward him. Toward that storm-rain scent. Toward the steady, grounding presence of him.

I forced myself back.

When I looked up hours later, I found him watching me. His eyes had gone faintly gold at the edges. The mate bond hummed between us, a living thing neither of us acknowledged.

He looked back at the map without comment.

I exhaled slowly and returned to the documents.

By midday, I had drafted the core legal argument for the tribunal. But I needed more. Julian's crimes were clear, but the Lycan Council would want corroborating testimony from other affected packs.

"I need to contact the smaller Alphas," I said. "The ones Julian stole from."

Kendrick nodded. "I can arrange—"

"No." I met his gaze. "I'll do it myself."

He studied me for a moment. Then inclined his head. "The royal network is at your disposal."

I spent the afternoon reaching out through mind-links, one Alpha at a time. Each conversation was careful. Deliberate. I didn't demand their cooperation. I listened. I acknowledged their specific losses—the hunting grounds Julian had stripped, the resources he'd diverted, the humiliation of being too small to fight back alone.

Alpha Garrett of the Pinewood Pack had lost his eastern timber lands. Alpha Nora of the Riverbend Pack had watched her fishing territories disappear. Alpha Silas of the Thornhill Pack had seen his winter hunting grounds seized through forged documents.

I framed their injuries not as isolated grievances, but as a unified pattern of Lycan Crown theft.

By the time I finished the third call, I had three sworn testimonies.

I opened my eyes to find Kendrick standing beside the table. He set a cup of hot tea next to my hand. Steam curled upward in the fading afternoon light.

"You're good at this," he said quietly.

I wrapped my fingers around the warm ceramic. "I spent fifteen years managing pack alliances for Julian. He just never bothered to notice."

"His loss," Kendrick said.

The words were simple. Factual. But something in his tone made my chest tighten.

I looked away first.

That evening, Julian's Beta arrived.

I heard the footsteps at the tree line just after sunset. Kendrick moved to the window, his posture shifting into something coiled and dangerous. But the Beta didn't approach. He simply left a sealed envelope at the cabin's threshold and retreated.

I retrieved it and broke the wax seal.

The demand was written in formal pack law language, stamped with two seals pressed side by side. Julian's Alpha seal. And Sadie's new Luna seal.

*Olivia Campbell is hereby ordered to vacate neutral border territory within forty-eight hours. Failure to comply will result in forcible removal as a rogue threat to Shadowvale border security.*

I read it once. Twice. Then I folded it carefully and handed it to Kendrick.

"Add it to the evidence file," I said. My voice was calm. Cold. "Abuse of Luna authority to intimidate a Lycan Crown witness. That's a second charge."

Kendrick took the document. His eyes flashed gold, just for a heartbeat. Then he added it to the file without blinking.

"She's escalating," he said.

"Good," I replied. "Let her. Every move she makes is another nail in their coffin."

Kendrick looked at me. Really looked at me. Something shifted in his expression—respect, maybe. Or recognition.

"You're not just surviving this," he said quietly. "You're weaponizing it."

I met his gaze. "I spent fifteen years being underestimated. I'm done with that."

He nodded slowly. Then he turned back to the evidence file.

And I stood there in the dim cabin light, my severed bond still aching, my wolf still howling for the mate I refused to acknowledge.

But for the first time in weeks, I felt something other than pain.

I felt power.
