After My Mate Replaced Me at Our Mating Ceremony

The bond snapped at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, right as Julian approached through ceremonial smoke with another she-wolf's scent clinging to him. After fifteen years of serving his rise, she stood with her neck bared—only to realize she'd been swapped out at the altar. Now, with the mating bond destroyed and her future hanging in the balance, she must discover who she is without the wolf who defined her.

Chapter 4

The border market sprawled across neutral ground like a living thing—canvas tents and wooden stalls packed tight, the air thick with the mingled scents of leather, spices, and wolf. I moved through the crowd with my hood up, gathering supplies Kendrick and I needed for the tribunal preparation. Dried herbs for the healer's testimony. Ink for the legal documents. Nothing that would draw attention.

I should have known Sadie wouldn't let me stay invisible.

The crowd parted before I saw her. Two Shadowvale warriors flanked her sides, their expressions blank but their postures aggressive. Sadie walked between them like she owned the ground beneath her feet. She wore a flowing dress that clung to her stomach—emphasizing, displaying, announcing.

She stopped three feet from me. Loud enough that every wolf within twenty yards could hear.

"Olivia Campbell," she said, her voice dripping false sweetness. "How kind of you to show your face."

I didn't respond. Just met her eyes and waited.

She placed both hands on her belly. The gesture was deliberate. Theatrical. "I'm carrying Julian's pup," she announced to the crowd. "The future heir of Shadowvale. And as Luna, I'm here to offer you one last chance to withdraw your legal challenge and acknowledge me as rightful Luna before the Lycan Council."

Murmurs rippled through the gathered wolves. A pregnant Luna was near-untouchable under pack law. Challenging her meant risking the wrath of every wolf who valued bloodline and tradition.

Sadie's smirk widened. She thought she'd won.

I set down my basket slowly. Straightened. Let the hood fall back from my face.

"I invoke scent-verification before witnesses," I said clearly.

The murmurs stopped.

Sadie's smirk faltered. "What?"

"Scent-verification," I repeated. "Ancient pack law. Older than any Alpha's decree. A pregnant she-wolf's belly carries the unmistakable scent of a developing pup. It cannot be falsified."

Her hand tightened on her stomach. "You have no right—"

"I have every right." I stepped forward. "You made this public. You demanded acknowledgment before witnesses. So let them witness."

The crowd pressed closer. I could feel their attention like a physical weight. Sadie's warriors shifted uncomfortably, but they didn't move. They couldn't. Pack law was pack law.

I stopped directly in front of her. Close enough to see the panic flickering behind her eyes.

I inhaled.

Her scent hit me immediately—cheap perfume, nervous sweat, and the faint musk of Julian's mark on her neck. But beneath it all, where the scent of a growing pup should have bloomed warm and sweet?

Nothing.

I turned to face the crowd.

"There is no pup-scent," I said.

The silence was absolute.

Sadie's face drained of color. Her hand flew to her stomach like she could will the lie into existence through sheer desperation. "You're lying," she hissed. "You're jealous and bitter and—"

"Verify it yourself." I gestured to the nearest elder she-wolf in the crowd. "Any female who has carried a pup knows the scent. Ask them."

The elder stepped forward. Inhaled carefully. Her expression hardened.

"No pup," she said flatly.

Another she-wolf moved closer. Then another. Each one confirming what I already knew. The gathered wolves shifted, their loyalty recalculating in real time. Sadie had gambled everything on a biological lie, and biology didn't negotiate.

I leaned close to her ear. Quiet enough that only the nearest wolves caught it.

"Enjoy raising nothing with a soon-to-be-titleless male."

Sadie stumbled backward. Her warriors caught her arms, but the damage was done. The crowd parted as she fled, whispers chasing her like wolves on a blood trail.

I picked up my basket and finished my shopping.

By nightfall, the story had spread to every pack at the border market. I knew because Kendrick told me when I returned to the cabin, his expression caught between grim satisfaction and something darker.

"Julian's going to retaliate," he said.

He was right.

The Alpha-tone command hit me just after midnight. Not in person this time—Julian was too much of a coward for that—but through the mind-link network, pushing pressure across distance like a blade sliding between ribs.

*Withdraw your testimony or I will dissolve the Silvercrest Pack's trade agreements and leave your father's pack to starve before winter.*

The threat was specific. Calculated. Vicious.

Selene erupted inside my mind, snarling and clawing for release. I pressed my hand against my neck, breathing through the rage, the bond-ache, the sheer audacity of him using my father as leverage.

I sat with it for exactly sixty seconds.

Then I contacted Kendrick.

He answered immediately. I relayed Julian's threat word for word, my voice steady despite the fury burning in my chest. There was a pause. Then Kendrick's voice came through, low and absolutely lethal.

"I'll handle it."

By morning, Kendrick had quietly arranged for the Lycan Crown to extend provisional trade protections to the Silvercrest Pack. My father's pack was insulated. Untouchable. Julian's economic threat became a dead card before he even realized it had been countered.

I stared at the official Lycan Crown document Kendrick handed me over breakfast, my throat tight.

"You didn't have to do this," I said quietly.

"Yes, I did." His eyes were steady. "He doesn't get to use your family as a weapon."

I looked away before the gratitude showed too clearly on my face.

But I wasn't done.

That afternoon, I sent a message to Julian through a neutral courier. A request for a private meeting at the old Shadowvale border mill. Remote. Quiet. The kind of location that suggested genuine vulnerability.

He agreed within the hour.

I met him at sunset. The mill was abandoned, its wooden beams rotting and its roof half-collapsed. Julian stood in the center of the empty space, arms crossed, his aura flickering with the false confidence of a male who thought he'd already won.

I approached slowly. Let my shoulders slump. Let the exhaustion show on my face.

"Julian," I said, and my voice cracked just enough. "I don't know if I can do this."

His expression shifted. Smug. Satisfied. He stepped closer.

"The tribunal?" he asked.

I nodded. Let the residual bond ache show in my eyes. "I'm afraid. Of what happens after. Of losing everything."

He leaned back against a support beam, utterly at ease. "You should be afraid," he said. "I have three allied Alphas voting as a bloc. They'll invoke a procedural challenge the moment the tribunal opens. Delay it indefinitely. By the time it reconvenes, Marcus will have destroyed the financial evidence through his pack connections, and you'll have nothing."

I memorized every word. Every name. Every detail.

"I didn't know," I whispered.

Julian smiled. "That's why you'll never win, Olivia. You were always too soft for this world."

I looked down. Let him see defeat in the curve of my spine.

"Thank you," I said quietly. "For telling me."

I walked out of the mill. Through the dark. Back to the cabin where Kendrick waited.

I closed the door behind me and met his eyes.

"I have everything," I said.

Kendrick's eyes flashed gold.

And together, we began dismantling Julian's tribunal strategy piece by piece.
